"Car folks, let me ask you a question..."

talks of a 3 series wagon (past year models 09-14) have been happening at the home.

https://media.ed.edmunds-media.com/bmw/3-series/2011/oem/2011_bmw_3-series_wagon_328i_fq_oem_1_500.jpg

I've been researching this thing to figure out any buyer beware notes but nothing is coming up

besides the cost of owning something like this

am I about to step on a landmine?

(these are current priced really well and I need a wagon like a fish need water)

I'm not aware of any red flags with that model in particular

other than the lux appeal, any reason why you're headed in that direction, as opposed to something more straightforward like a subaru wagon?

just because it's a Bimmer...be sure to get a warranty (obviously, not breaking news) because you WILL have oil leaks...and lots of them. Oil pan, valve covers, oil filter housing, rear main seal...and the repairs are NOT cheap, labor-wise.

I tried to find it on their website but came up empty. Why do you need a wagon vs. just a sedan with a hatch? (If you don't mind me asking)

Wagons are a dying breed, sadly. As with any German car (BMW, M/B, Audi), get the best warranty you can find find so the inevitable repair doesn't cost an arm and a kidney

I like wagons.
I briefly entertained the 3 series wagon, but it felt a tad too small..... we needed to fit 2 car seats in there with some room to spare in the cargo.

and i'm 5'10" tall so I don't have the seat ALL the way back, but maybe halfway. She still has ample room for her feet to dangle and only kicks the back of my seat if she tries to. VS in the BMW, I would have had to have the seat pulled all the way forward to avoid her kicking it.

The Passat was the largest cargo capacity and leg room short of a Volvo XC70/V70 or the Mercedes E350 Wagon (Which i REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted). The Subaru Outbacks are good...but I'm not granola enough for a Subaru. Also, Subaru owners just seem to take shitty care of their car interiors, so the used market was abysmal when looking for something that didn't look/smell like it had been rode hard and put away wet.

SO yeah, just check the rear leg room with a car seat installed if you have kids. Also, if you want to put a bicycle inside, check that it will work with the seat. I can put my road bike in the back of the Passat with the front wheel removed and the seat removed. And I don't have to fold the rear seats down to do it. That's major requirement for me.

The 3 Series just felt small overall. Def. would not want to have adults riding back there for any extended period of time if the driver and passenger are taller than 5'10"

and we have tall friends

good look with the break down.

we are also looking at the volvo v60 wagon

These new cars have the most cramped interiors - if you want something with equivalent space to something from the 90s you have to go with a boat.

take a sit down in one before you buy.
I think the A6 Avant would be more your size if you're wanting to stay in the luxury lane. I'd push you towards the Passat, but it's probably not gonna offer the Luxury you're after. They have a Lux model with a V6 & 4Motion, but they are kinda hard to come by, and priced accordingly.

BTW, y'all tall as hell fam!

nerdy answer
Skip 2014 but if you can get a 6 cylinder between 09 -13 thats the sweet spot for them
4 cylinder between 2014 to now have had some issues
i considered copping one a couple years ago but went with a CTSV wagon for performance and driving experience reasons
i would also take a volvo V60 over the Bmw for cargo and drivetrain and reliability
