all shares to the public are class A (non-voting rights)

It opened at 24, closed at 24.48. Regular folks made around a 1-2% return today. Good, but not earth shattering.

I'm interested to see what happens going forward. I'm not confident in their business model

long-term, this is definitely Twitter all over again.

there's no reasonable path to profitability (or even sustained user growth) for this company.

18. "High school wins big with Snapchat ipo"
In response to Reply # 0

http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/02/technology/snapchat-ipo-high-school/index.html

One California high school just made millions from Snap's IPO
By Seth Fiegerman March 02, 2017 18:17PM EST

Earlier this week, Simon Chiu watched Snapchat's team put on an IPO presentation for investors in San Francisco. He was surrounded by investment bankers from firms like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.

"It was a little bit of fish out of water for me," Chiu told CNNTech. "I'm an educator. It's not what I do."

Chiu is the president of Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California. The Catholic school just happens to be one of the first investors in Snapchat (SNAP).

Five years ago, Saint Francis invested $15,000 in Snapchat. After the company's blockbuster public offering Thursday, that stake is likely worth millions.

The unusual deal came about thanks to a few students who were obsessed with the app -- and one curious parent who happened to be a venture capitalist.

Barry Eggers, founder of Lightspeed Venture Partners, came home from work one day to find his daughter Natalie and her friends staring at their phones and laughing.

"My daughter looked up at me and said: 'Dad, have you seen this app? It's called Snapchat.'" Eggers wrote in a Medium post on Thursday. His son then walked into the room and said, "Yeah, we use it a lot too."

Eggers was taken aback and decided to reach out to Jeremy Liew, a partner at Lightspeed.

" said there's three apps that everyone has on their phone: Instagram, Angry Birds and Snapchat," Liew told CNNTech. "We were familiar with Instagram and Angry Birds."

Related: How going public may change Snapchat

Liew did some "sleuthing" and connected with Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel on, of all platforms, Facebook (FB, Tech30) Spiegel got back to him "five minutes later" and the two set up a meeting.

Liew and his firm decided to invest in Snapchat, but Eggers also invited his daughter's school to invest. The students' parents had previously launched a Saint Francis investment fund to back startups, with Eggers serving on its board.

In April 2012, Lightspeed invested $485,000 in Snapchat and Saint Francis put in $15,000, making them the first investors. Snapchat was then valued at just $4.25 million, according to Liew.

"We didn't have real high expectations," Kevin Makley, the school's former president, told CNNTech. "We collectively decided that this was going to be a ... small investment. So we'll take a shot at it."
Simon Chiu (right), the current president of Saint Francis High School, and former president Kevin Makley.

On Thursday, Snapchat's parent company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange with a market value of $33 billion, or more than 7,750 times the valuation it had when the high school invested.

Lightspeed, which invested a total of $8.1 million in the company over the years, now owns a stake worth nearly $2 billion based on Snap's opening stock price, according to an IPO filing.

Saint Francis has not disclosed the value of its Snapchat holdings, but Makley said it is far and away the school's most successful investment -- beating out a $2.1 million return on an earlier bet in a company called Advanced Fiber.

"This one," he says of the Snapchat investment "is huge."

Related: Meet Snapchat's billionaires and millionaires

On Thursday afternoon, the school's administrators began meeting with faculty and staff to explain the investment's back story and what may be done with the money.

"It's probably hard for the average 16-year-old kid to understand how this all came about," says Chiu. "I think for our students, it's going to be just some excitement about something they use every day."

In a letter to the school's community, Chiu said the Snapchat payday will help it to "make Catholic education more affordable" and recruit more faculty.

"This incredible boon will not, by itself, completely fund the goals of the strategic plan," he wrote, "but it will help lay the necessary foundation and give us a remarkable head start."

At the end of the IPO investor presentation this week, Chiu says he walked up to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and "thanked him for the opportunity."

that stock hate that folks have every time a tech company makes money without selling something physical. Especially if it's an app we don't use.

i wonder how many people sold FB early based on fear.

I prolly couldn't do it tho unless I had money to burn. I would be watching that shit every minute instead of holding for the long haul.

You think I am jelly because some of yall can buy it and I can't?

My little brother just bought some of the stock and he is a struggling student and I tell him the same thing. Be careful. For every FB, Google IPO there are a gazillion others that lose money.

Our income is supplemented by tech stock money so a successful snapchat would literally indirectly pay my kids tuition but this feels so much like 2000 to me it makes me crazy.

If folks believe in the product that is one thing. But mainly it seems people are buying purely for speculation. That's that 2000s ish when my grandma was trying to give me hot stock tips.

1)FB was actually profitable before it IPO'd. snap posted $515 MM net loss last year, despite exponential revenue growth.

2) FB IPO'd in 2012 when we were i) on the precipice of economic stabilization, and ii) when the nasdaq was 50% lower versus where it is here now, trading at all-time highs and everything fully priced for perfection.

other stuff that stood out from the story

1-that the high school has an investment account, period
2-the account was funded with at least $15k, but the school prez called that "a small investment", so figure maybe $50-100k total. or more?
3-they made tens of millions (so far), but dude said that is not enough to completely fund whatever future plans they have for the school

sheesh. what happened to the school bake sales?

NBCUniversal Invested $500 Million In Snap Inc As Part Of IPO
“With the Snap investment, we have invested over $1.5 billion in promising digital businesses in the last eighteen months.”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/snap-nbc-ipo_us_58b99121e4b0b998941713b6?8ayr511cehjud6lxr&

Comcast Corp’s (CMCSA.O) NBCUniversal said on Friday it had invested $500 million in Snap Inc (SNAP.N) as it continues to spend heavily on digital media companies.

Snap’s shares jumped 8.6 percent to $26.59 in early trading. The company finished its first day of trading with a 44 percent gain compared to its IPO price of $17.00.

The investment was made as a part of the Snapchat owner’s initial public offering, NBCUniversal Chief Executive Steve Burke said in a memo to employees.

Earlier, CNBC reported that Snap’s stock allocation to NBCUniversal seems to be the only one made to a new strategic investor, making NBCUniversal the lone U.S. media company with a stake.

Comcast has invested heavily in digital-native companies such as BuzzFeed and Vox Media, partly in an effort to better service existing advertisers.

“With the Snap investment, we have invested over $1.5 billion in promising digital businesses in the last eighteen months,” Burke said in the memo.

NBCUniversal has already launched entertainment programs such as The Voice, SNL and E! News’ The Rundown on Snapchat. The media company said it expects to launch more Snapchat shows in the coming weeks.

NBCUniversal has agreed to hold Snap’s shares for at least a year, according to the CNBC report.

Snap disclosed last month that it expected investors buying up to a quarter of its shares in the company’s $3.4 billion initial public offering to agree not to sell them for a year.

Lock-up periods help companies moderate stock volatility by preventing company insiders from selling their shares within an allotted time.

NBCUniversal courted Snap co-founder Evan Spiegel for the past year, CNBC said, and both companies have been working on deepening their relationship.

Snap declined to comment beyond details noted in its prospectus and other U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Comcast’s shares were marginally lower.

Majority of my money goes into a couple index funds or ETFs. Set it and forget it.

Then I've got a little money in "blue chips" ... mature companies that I expect to continue to grow at a stable pace for a long time. I just ride the waves while reinvesting their dividends.

Finally, I have a small account for playing around. It's supposed to be the most risky bets but it's really not that risky... mostly tech stocks that I think have some sort of short to mid term catalyst in the future... I either think they're gonna get bought out or I just want to jump in on the momentum for awhile. No home runs here but consistent hits that make me feel like I could probably invest a lot more (if I had the disposable income).

How do they make money? I been thinking about it for awhile, sponsored snaps? I know they have filtered with sponsored filters, but I could see some expanding in that field. but like twitter I don't see them effectively monetizing their users.

plus snap's going to face rising competition from FB/insta that have a lot of the same features.

even in a traditionally-bloated sector like tech/social media. , i just can't get my arms around around a $40B valuation versus -113% in free cash flow.

and up until google/fb, social media, targeted ads, etc... it was basically throwing dump trucks of money off a bridge

and no way to know if that tv /magazine ad was effective, or even getting to your right demographic

now u can target married latinas age 18-25 in southern cities
or retired couples worth 100-200k that like cruises

as for snap, they do get ads and sponsored filter money
and apparently in some cases, letting ppl play with a optimus prime head filter is better promo than scrolling past a transformers pt 9 ad in IG or twitter

but that seems like a limited case imo

them making money long term is where the tv, snap glasses, music, and other ventures come in

Snap's post-IPO gains just disappeared

By Seth Fiegerman March 06, 2017 16:26PM EST

Snap's Wall Street honeymoon may be over.
Snapchat's parent company tanked more than 12% in trading Monday, ending the day at $23.77 a share. That puts Snap below its first day opening price of $24.
The stock plunge comes after a strong Wall Street debut. Snap (SNAP) soared 44% above its IPO price of $17 a share on Thursday, its first day of trading. It jumped another 11% on Friday amid pent-up investor demand for the flashy social media service.

But analysts have been raising significant concerns about Snap's user growth, valuation and hype.
"The sexier and more glamorous a company's IPO, the more likely it is to be overpriced at its IPO date," Laura Martin, an analyst with Needham, wrote in an investor note about Snap Monday.
Martin described Snap as a "lottery-like" stock. "Sometimes lottery tickets do pay off," she wrote. But a "close scrutiny" of Snap's business suggest otherwise.
Related: One California high school just made millions from Snap's IPO
James Cordwell, a research analyst with Atlantic Equities, compared Snap's soaring stock and lofty valuation to Twitter (TWTR, Tech30) after its IPO in 2013.
"At some point, the stock has to collide with the fundamentals," Cordwell told CNNTech Friday, referring to Snap's actual business growth. "I guess that will start moving to the front of investors' minds as we move toward the company's first earnings report."
"It is significantly overvalued," Brian Wieser, an analyst with Pivotal Research Group, wrote in an investor note Thursday. "We value Snap at $10 per share."
The young company saw user growth slow to a halt in the final months of last year, according to its original IPO filing last month. The slowdown coincided with Facebook (FB, Tech30)-owned Instagram launching a Snapchat copycat feature.
Snap only began making money two years ago and is still struggling to turn a profit. The company suffered losses of $515 million in 2016, up from a loss of $373 million the year before.
And Snap's two young founders will maintain voting control over the company, meaning those buying its stock now will have no say in how the company operates.

It could turn out to be a $40 stock by the end of the year...it could be a $5 stock at the end of the year. All you have is their S-1.

I provided a link to a free course on corporate finance in the other thread. Folks want to do a pro forma based on the S-1 and then make a decision. Great! But that isn't what's happening here.

Also didn't realize that the CEO is 26. Mark Zuckerberg aside, I just don't have any faith that a 26-year-old can have any idea what he is doing in a space like this.

i think the employee lock-up period is 5 months. the big boys/institutional players are locked up for one year.

where ever the stock is that point, you're going to have a natural wave of selling, nevertheless.

It's a new stock. There will be a lot of volatility in the price from day to day.
We don't need a daily track on it.

I'm pulling for you tho. I think this company is going to invest in some real talent to help them monetize it. It's entertaining watching folks cheer and wave their flags during the first half mile of a 1,000 mile marathon.

Folks in here sticking their chest out and shit, fake finish lines every few meters.

Shares of Snap fall below $20 for the first time

The parent company of Snapchat just got hit with another sell rating, and shares are tanking.

With the company's IPO in the rear-view mirror, MoffettNathanson said it initiated coverage on Snap with a sell rating Thursday, saying the market has now priced the company for perfection.

Snap shares fell below $20 for the first time Thursday, down more than 4 percent and nearing an IPO price of $17 per share.

"As a result, we believe its current valuation 'bubble' at 7X 202 EV/revenue is set up more for a like pop over the next year than a steady rise from today's levels," analyst Michael Nathanson said in a note to investors, giving the company a target price of $15.

The firm cited risks such as slowing daily average user growth, limited revenue and profitability. "SNAP's income statement is going to look a lot more like than ," Nathanson said.

Snap has raised some eyebrows on Wall Street, with analysts flagging the company's slowing user growth, widening losses and lack of voting rights for outside investors.

way oversold technically on the chart, but ended up sitting it out. if it re-tests $22, i might.

been trading in and out of $AAPL, $NVDA, $IWM and $SPY, both calls and puts and doing well.

loving this market volatility with erry'one scared about the health care bill and overall gridlock in DC over trump's fledgling agenda, which was priced to perfection in the rally from november to march.

Thing is SNAP's core audience barely fucks with FB
but FB has money to burn and can turn up the pettiness to 11

In response to Reply # 130

they don't have any proprietary tech. literally the only thing they have is a lot of users (for now).

Instagram's Stories feature already has more daily users than Snap in total.

what's the logical end-game here? Snap is just Vine all over again.

134. "May 10 SNAP will post its first quarterly report"
In response to Reply # 0

May 10
Snapchat parent Snap, Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) hit the market nearly two months ago with a flurry of hype, and now in a few days it will deliver its first quarterly report as a public company. Snap stock has been volatile, and that's not going to change when it announces fresh financials for the first quarter. Snap reports on May 10 after the market close.

Analysts see revenue soaring 186% since the prior year's first quarter, though skeptics will point out that Snap it expected to post another quarterly deficit. The concern at Snap is decelerating user growth, so the market will want to see how usage is trending.

User growth slowed last quarter and didn't improve this quarter. The Facebook/Instagram competitor has more daily users.
Losses more than doubled compared to last quarter

At least not of a real 100M revenue company.

Zuck was a fluke who was willing to surround himself with adults and too much on the spectrum to get distracted by all the things a mid-twenties kid would.

and still took a while after that to get solid footing.

the guys at snap, 25 or 45, know the wheels are falling off and trying to pump&dump while the tech bubble money is still on the table

technically its possible that they trip and fall into some long term strategy, but i aint signing up to find out

*for how bad the bubble is now- a startup that does spellcheck & grammer for your articles/term papers (ie google chrome mixed with MS WORD clippy) just got $100M

Dude's idea was to have a website that would connect other area colleges so he could check out their chicks. He didn't set out on a mission to connect the world. Brilliant guy, sure, of course, he was doing CS at Harvard, but they fell into this shit, big time. Nothing wrong with that, I just don't like deification of people who had some decent ideas and made existing platforms better.

All of these social media empires aren't much different than the drug game, they capitalize on the same human weaknesses and insecurities, the need to escape real life and get pleasure/validation. Even the nomenclature of the customer is the same, the "User". Zuck and the like are much more like Walter White than Thomas Edison.

Other than an adverse effect on businesses that are able to market through these channels, these apps could all vanish and it would probably be the best thing that ever happened to humanity. People would go through withdrawals for a brief period of time but then be happier than ever and wonder why they gave so much of their time to this crap.

the transition from startup to profitable company wasnt a fluke

especially compared to the flailing around that u see snapchat doing

or the dead carcasses of myspace, friendster, geocities, etc

no deification of zuckerberg or any of these ppl is needed to notice the dumpster fire over at snapchat

That's definitely right time and place.

I am talking about the steering of a good idea with lots of competitors being steered to the gazillion dollar top by a 25 year old.

I don't think I disagree with dude.

My idea is that it's crazy to think a 25 year old can run a billion dollar company and the only reason it worked in facebook's case is because dude was surrounded by a great team and he shared the leadership with tech professionals.

There's a difference between red hot impulse buys and long-term fundamental analysis,

there's just too much red on this income statement, all that financing they took on wouldn't matter if they at least showed some hot returns in earnings per share.

These dudes are toast, I fear they sunk too much capital into prod development.

If you saw it coming you could have shorted at the high level and bought back once the slide reached a peak(or as stated, after the expiration period ends and the investors start getting rid of it). As I said above, that was the move.

Snap Q2 average revenue per user misses estimates
Snap shares tumble after missing user growth forecasts
1 Hour Ago | 01:16

Snap has not snapped back.

The social media company reported worse-than-expected quarterly results on Thursday, with a loss that was steeper than expected and revenue that missed estimates, as it added fewer users than Wall Street anticipated.

Snap added 7 million daily users during the second quarter — a slower rate than the 8 million added in the first quarter. Its shares fell more than 17 percent to around $11.40 in after-hours trading, below the all-time intraday low of $11.91 set during regular trading on Aug. 3.
