These are two people who were grieving over the same loss and who possibly/probably had a close relationship prior to that loss. Frankly it makes perfect sense that such a situation can lead to a more intimate romantic relationship.

People are too busy looking at what they would or wouldn’t do in that circumstance to stop and put any real thought into the notion that these people and, I’m sure, others who have had such an experience, probably didn’t think they’d do it themselves.

It’s certainly left of center practice most people ultimately wouldn’t do, but human emotions are what they are.

Personally I think this is taboo for no good reason other than people look for anything to take some imagined moral high ground.

I just don’t think what you or I would do, how we think we would or wouldn’t act, etc is relevant.

I think it’s relevant to look at the couple involved and ponder how/why they wound up together. No real wrong is committed, just the breaking of basic social taboos that don’t really hold up to reason if we’re taking an honest look at the complex human emotions involved.

IMHOP it amounts to a bad rebound relationship. You were so use to a certain long term relationship that you very quickly fall into another relationship because it feels similar and gives a sense of continuity.

Until you discover that we are talking about two very different people (and you just can't replace one with the other). And then you realized that you got together more out of response to a past relationship or traumatic experience than rather a genuine organic attraction in the first place.

The problem with this rebound though is that breaking up is messy since you all are kinda sort of family. Awkward thanksgivings.

But who knows where it will go and how it will happen?

I'm sure plenty of relationships that appear less than ideal on the surface work out just fine.

Were I a friend or relative of either I’d be asking the obvious hard questions and trying to discourage this for the same reasons you listed.

I’d bet money they pondered those hard questions on their own.

I’m not talking about his failed marriage either. It’s certainly part of the whole but there’s not necessarily a direct correlation and even if there were, divorce is generally a complex situation in and of itself.

What’s the actual issue here?

I understand the social taboos, but that’s incredibly flimsy.

I understand the ramifications where children are involved, but do we have any information indicating this is *actually* bad for the children?

I understand the potential familial awkwardness if there’s a breakup, but that’s to be determined.
