3)The sexual harassment allegations and hiring of homie at google who got kicked out for said harassment

and now this

If Uber was publically traded he would have been out...

In response to Reply # 6
Wed Mar-01-17 01:18 PM by Cam

Homeboy confronted the CEO directly, how's that weak?

I hear Uber ads on the radio every day in NYC, the effort is to specifically poach TLC drivers from their traditional Car Service companies. Uber explicitly guarantees a weekly income of $1,500, at least initially and insinuates it for the long term. When those numbers never materialize, I've asked every Uber Driver I ride with in the city if that # is a realistic one, and I have never met one who says it is, those people should just be content? The exodus of drivers from Car Services due to Uber's dominance has put plenty of those services out of business. So, for a former TLC Driver who wants to go back to that Car Service after being disappointed with Uber's unfulfilled promises, what recourse is there?

For many, jumping into a new career isn't as easy as you just saying it.

Personally, I see the opposite of cowardice watching that Driver present his issues to Kalanick, the primary person who has the ability to enact change.

It be one thing if the driver knew what he was getting into, but they've done some insanely shady as shit to their drivers.

He has to be on some, "I am sorry to hear that, I hope you recover, blah blah blah"

And maybe somewhere in all that slip in, "it might have not been the best idea to invest all your money in a business you have no control over, but again, sorry to hear....."

Otherwise this happens.

In response to Reply # 6

At least the CEO had the decency to not confirm it to his face.

I'll give the Uber Black driver a little more credit though... he's more sophisticated than the average UberX driver because he has to be. Uber Black cars have to be run by professional taxi services so this guy is likely the owner/operator of his own business.

Being a part of Uber was initially good for business but now he's realizing that they have different goals. He at least needs to make enough to cover all of his costs (which include wages for himself and other drivers), if not break a profit to potentially grow his business.

Uber doesn't need to make a profit (yet). It can continue to cut costs and lose millions as long as they continue to gain marketshare. The pay off on that marketshare is eventually transitioning to cars that don't need drivers. Anybody that drives for Uber is essentially accelerating the demise of their own businesses.

14. "Subprime loans?"
In response to Reply # 12

Uber, which didn't respond to questions from Jalopnik about its viability, recently paid $US20 ($26) million to settle claims that it grossly misled how much drivers could earn on Craigslist ads. The company's explosive growth also fundamentally required it to begin offering subprime auto loans to prospective drivers without a vehicle.

Drivers with loans need to work to pay their monthly tab, thereby necessitating they work more for less, and so on....

...the Craigslist ads, for one thing, succeeded in reeling in drivers.

"I thought I would try it out because I was desperate," said one driver who learned about the company after reading an online ad and declined to be named for fear of retribution in an interview with Jalopnik. "Back then, the pay was quite a bit more than it is now.

now I get the frustration for those who bought into the hype but cmon...

Mary Kay, MLMs, Yoga Pants, Pre Paid Legal... all those companies tell you to buy x amount and you can make y amount if you hustle hard.

I feel for those people but you still have to take responsibility. Buying a car to work for Uber sounds like a really bad idea.

I stopped driving for Uber and don't use the service. You guys can do the same.

My point is both parties need to accept responsibility for their actions.

predatory lending is wrong as fuck BUT... when someone tells you they can get you a 20% return in a bad market it's your responsibility to check the numbers.

is it ever a good idea to buy a luxury whip just so you can work for Uber?

I don't think its as simple as people being stupid and making the wrong decision; there was a certain cultural cache to the brand and the 'share economy' was all the rage. It was seen as an equal to AirBnB and I knew a bunch who brought into both. (Obviously only ones left doing it are the airbnb folks, LOL)

We can armchair quarterback now the fact they ended up being swindlers, but I can't blame someone for falling for the scam.

Unlike MLM or Mary Kay it genuinely looks good on paper since there's a direct real world legit job, taxi drivers, who do make a decent amount of cash. As opposed to reporting to your local taxi commision, you just report into a phone, bing bam boom...cash.

I feel for those who think it's a good idea to go all in on Uber like it's a 100% success rate.

This is America. Ads are made to make you believe you can flip houses and get rich, take a pill and get skinny, buy a car and get bitches...

that's not how it works.

The spectrum ranges from those who are desperate, those who are merely looking for a way to improve their lot in life and, yes, those who just want a magical road to wealth, but the fact is that if the tactics employed by these companies to snare those people are predatory, it's a problem.

Yes, people have to accept responsibility for their choices.

That does not absolve Uber and others who employ similarly deceptive practices of *their* responsibility.

Personal responsibility is a two way street.

Some people don’t like to take responsibility for their own problems

-Uber CEO

If he lived by that motto he’d acknowledge and accept that his business practices, up to and including recruiting, have had a highly negative impact on the people he employs.

The fact that “he’ll be fine”, as you said, is precisely the problem. He’ll deal with media fallout from negative publicity but, again, he’ll be fine.

Because he’s got cushion to absorb the blow.

The driver he’s arguing with? No such cushion or, at least, not nearly as thick of a cushion as the CEO.

The CEO will be fine because he’s not the ground level grunt having to serve as the first wave cannon fodder due to his own leadership.

If he, as HE says, took responsibility for HIS actions, he’d change the practices of his company or, bare minimum, hear his employ out and adopt a compassionate, understanding tact in response instead of doubling down and blaming everything on the employee.

But he didn’t do that, did he?

He passed the buck.

“I went bankrupt because of you” isn’t the best look but how inaccurate is that statement? Who knows.

You don’t blame the CEO for responding negatively to negative criticism of the way his policies negatively impact his employees, DO blame the employee and then above ask who is giving the CEO a pass.
100% of your criticism is aimed at the employee and none of it is aimed at the CEO.

>I never said the CEO was right about everything

No, you just choose not to say anything negative about him. In fact he's a complete afterthought on your end of this discussion.

By contrast you sure do hold the driver's feet to the personal responsibility fire.

There's a grand canyon sized discrepancy there.

I'm not saying you're singing the CEO's praises.

I am saying you're completely ignoring his complicity.

>but the
>driver was dead wrong about blaming the CEO for his
>bankruptcy.

You know this how exactly?

Because it's most likely not that cut and dry. I've already said people, this driver included, need to take responsibility for their choices. Thing is I also included the CEO in that statement, something neither the CEO or you, it would seem, is willing to accept.

I'm the guy saying this personal responsibility bit is a two way street.

You're the guy pointing the personal responsibility finger squarely at the driver and ignoring that of the CEO.

The bankruptcy aspect might be invalid on the whole but it absolutely does not invalidate the broader implications of his argument. It's not as though the bankruptcy bit invalidates or absolves the CEO's role in creating circumstances that are decidedly disadvantageous to his employees and the argument of the driver was about the numerous changes and increasingly downscale approach employed by Uber.

Saying he's bankrupt because of the CEO doesn't invalidate that at all.

Further, the CEO was entirely unwilling to hear the man out and ran rather quickly to the "personal responsibility" crutch.

Uber is trying to destroy the business model where people can earn a living driving cars. Their goal is have people chauffeured by driverless cars.... and they're going to do it on the backs of the people that helped make their service popular.

There current business model doesn't work. They are currently subsidizing drivers pay by like 40% with investors money.

Their goal is to get the user base and switch over to driverless cars before they run out of money. What happens to drivers after that?
