"Rebel Flag duo gets 28 years for racial slurs and death threats"

oh, so now you wanna cry about it?
That isn't you?
You would never?

http://abcnews.go.com/US/duo-prison-time-racial-slurs-death-threats-black/story?id=45788918

A Georgia judge sentenced a couple to prison time today for their involvement in a 2015 incident in which a group they were part of waved Confederate flags, shouted racial slurs and made armed threats, all at adults and children attending a child's party outside of Atlanta.

Jose Torres, 26, and Kayla Norton, 25, cried today in a Douglas County court as they were sentenced to 20 years and 15 years in jail, respectively.

In July 2015, the parents of three children were part of a group of Confederate flag supporters calling themselves Respect the Flag. For two days that summer, the group rode around in pickup trucks threatening black families and calling them racial slurs across two counties in the Atlanta suburbs.

The group targeted black families shortly after the Charleston church massacre because its members were upset that South Carolina had responded to the brutal slayings by removing the Confederate battle flag from various sites.

At one point, the group pulled up to a birthday party for a black child in Douglasville. The group's members allegedly threatened to kill the partygoers, with Torres confronting the family with a gun that Norton had loaded. The family called the police.

Video of the incident was posted on YouTube by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In an indictment, Torres and Norton, among others, were charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats and violation of the state's Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

During the pair's sentencing today, the judge said the pair's actions "were motivated by racial hatred," according to The Associated Press.

Through tears, Norton addressed the relatives of the child whose birthday she and others disrupted.

"That is not me. That is not me. That is not him," Norton said in court after her sentencing. "I would never walk up to you and say those words to you. And I am so sorry that happened to you."

Four people were charged with felonies, according to ABC affiliate WSB-TV.com; however, the other two people pleaded guilty and got shorter prison terms.

The judge, saying Torres and Norton had committed a hate crime, also banned them from entering Douglas County after they were released from prison.

I'm sure this sentence will be reduced but I love it.

These guys are idiots AND monsters - but this is more time than many people get for actual (not 1st degree) murder.

I think this country as a WHOLE is giving too much time for most crimes. Would 5 years be less of deterrent that 15? I'm not sure.

1)I hope they go to a public prison - not a for profit prison.

2)I think we should revisit their sentences - but ONLY AFTER all other sentences in the US are reviewed.

That rule is so unfuckingly STUPID and Draconian I can not believe it was upheld by the supreme court.

Simple minded fucking idiots latched on "If you get 3 strikes in baseball you are out, so why not do that with crime?? - and instead of the stakes being a trophy the stakes are someone's life?"

I get it - it probably will never be changed - UNLESS - hear me out.. unless we get Major League Baseball to change the rule to 4 strikes and you're out.

>idiots figure out the legal system needs reform and should

They do - and they are, but I think the rules should allow flexibility and then to reevaluate everyone sentence under the old system. And do it in a first in/first reviewed manner - these guys can wait in line.

No one should get life in prison for stealing perfume, or jeans, or slapping someone.

Question:
Is this why The Hamburglar isn't in those commercials anymore? Is he in pelican Bay in general Population just trying to survive?

Remember; this was intentionally done after Charleston to go on a tear driving around pointing guns and threatening to kill black people.

Forgetting about race: you point a gun at a child threatening to kill him you would be lucky to have the police catch you before the parents do a large amount of the time.

On the race level, this fits perfectly with the definition of 'terrorism'. For such a heinous crime I don't buy that you can 'rehabilitate'...just because its not as visceral as assault doesn't mean it doesn't tear at the very fabric of what it means to be a free society.

They are the smiling faces here:

Just because they didn't string them up...or in this case shoot a n----- doesn't mean they aren't complicit.

and pulled out a shotgun in them.

Georgia has dumb high numbers when it comes to jail time.

My boy got 15 years for beating up his ex girlfriend and her boyfriend. He could have taken the plea and did 3 years but he tried to fight it for some odd reason.

15 years. He just got out.

I mean they clearly were intimidating people, brandish weapons, menacing people. But is 15 years going to rehabilitate them more then 7? or 5?

How does does it cost to keep them in jail?

Do we not care our tax dollars are being uses to punish without working toward an outcome? <-Serious questions, I do think some people would pay to punish people - and never pay when we help people.

We want to punish this behavior, deter people from doing it, and make sure that people convicted don't do it again.

But is 15-20 years serving us, the public, better than 5 or 7 or 3?

They did try "lock them up and throw away the key" and "kill them all" in the past - and neither of those stopped crime from occurring.

And AGAIN let me state: We should review all sentences currently in the system before we review the sentences for this particular case.

The problem is that its hard to bring out the violins for someone who went to threaten children for racist reasons then lets say a poor stoner that thought he could hand a teller a piece of paper to rob a bank after watching westerns all day.

We've moved away from rehabilitation, and the recent moves to focus on that looks like are slowly getting undone by our new Attorney General. Its just hard to be the change we wanna be in this case when you've got so many more deserving cases that don't have a tried and true evil act at the core.

There's also the elephant in the room where jail will probably even enforce their racist views.

Of course it would easily be that time or more if they were black so I don't lose too much sleep but like someone says there is a systematic problem there.

We use prison to solve way too many problems that could better be resolved in other ways.

The article itself specifies 20 years for one, 15 years for the other.

Pulling a gun and threaten people, especially kids, will get you that.

Brothers have gotten hard time for lesser crimes. Brothers and sisters can be victims and STILL get demonized. I have no sympathy for these two idiots. Maybe they shouldn't have been waving guns at kids and putting them as well as the adults into fear that their lives were on the line.

If some Black folks had pulled that stunt with a bunch of flags with black fists and yelling cracker this, cracker that at little Conner's birthday party, do you think they'd get less time if they opted to fight the case? Do you think there would be any talk about them getting too much time? No. They'd be all kinds of thugs who deserve the electric chair. These two get no tears from me about how much hard time they're getting. They wouldn't be in this predicament if they wouldn't have pulled that stupid stunt.
