"Damages: value of a 50-year-old painting of your Mom?"
Reckless developers tearing down building next door have caused belongings to fall and break in our apartment and the one upstairs. They want us to give them a list of damaged items and their value.
How would you begin to set the value of an oil portrait of your mother that was made in the 60s?

She's been gone in relation to the artists fame of notoriety. If she's not gone than the fame of the artist and if she's not gone and the artist isn't famous then you may be out of luck.
I'm no lawyer though so don't take any of that as instruction

Not allowed in there for more than a few minutes to get what we need (order from city inspector) and landlord asked us not to touch or move anything until he can talk to his attorney about it. He's livid at the developers.

My neighbor accused me of slamming my door so hard that a photo of her fell and was damaged. I asked her to get an estimate from an art restorer - but she never did - so no money from me.
Oh, and she had two teenagers in her house - I believe they damaged the photo and not me - but if it was under $100 I'd have paid it to keep the eace.
