Personally I don’t see any objective validity in such an “honor amongst thieves” set of rules.

I get where OKP as an entity and the mods can establish such ground rules, but not the “inmates”, so to speak.

A far more insidious and detrimental act than the whole “kill yourself” bit is the passive aggressive antagonism that occurs far more often. Sure, you can draw arbitrary lines around what’s cool to say and what’s not, but it’s just that: arbitrary.

There’s a lot of button pushing that, on the face of things, don’t necessarily “seem” as bad as other things that can be said, but ultimately if you’re a participant in the muckraking on any level you have zero moral ground to bitch and moan about someone crossing your personal standard of decency. Where exactly do you think a culture of sniping hostility ultimately leads? Someone ultimately coming with "meaner" words than yours are an inevitable and direct byproduct. The two go hand in hand.

It’s always easy to point to extreme outliers and pretend you’re without sin by virtue of not being the worst offender.

There’s a lot of talk about ‘stability” but literally everyone who has mentioned that in this post does an awful lot of antagonism on their own right and the truth is anytime anyone is expending any energy at all trying to fuck with people on a message board on any level, that person isn’t exactly the picture of well-adjusted maturity.

You can’t say these words on these screens are not that serious and no big deal and then suddenly decide they ARE serious and it IS a big deal when those words are suddenly meaner than you’d like.

So that means these words do matter, and that means we should probably evaluate whether or not less inflammatory words also matter.
Further, a specific word may not be as “harsh” as another but there are other means of fucking with people in ways that are far more common than the extreme outlier.

The only real reason nobody wants to go there is that it demands that we- yes, we, collectively- have to decide whether the way we interact with each other matters and people mostly want to be able to just run amok as they please without moderation *or* the possibility that someone might say something more mean than them.

But again… if it’s really not all that serious, it doesn’t matter either way.

response to mistreatment.
If you thump someone on the back of the
neck and they turn around and shoot you,

Was their response extreme? Yeah, but
you brought that extreme response on yourself.
Just treat people with respect, and live
a peaceful life as best you can.

It's amazing to me that anyone blames the

This is a concept I'd think Black people

By contrast, in a given block of time, say, a month, how many times are you an unnecessarily snarky asshole to someone?

I’m pretty sure the number of that last one dramatically eclipses the first two combined, which makes it a far, far more impactful and culturally relevant element of OKP.
