it basically tells us everything we already know, tracing history from slavery, lynching, blackface, segregation, Civil Rights, all the way up to Ferguson

some of the footage is a little difficult, but it's kind of a wake up call to everyone who can afford to be oblivious. basically racist whitey is more evil than we could have ever imagined

I caught this in Berkeley

as you said, full of whites (older)

the doris day to lynching transition was perfect

I'm not sure if it still isn't registering that they were complicit in today's resultant

the clapping for the Obama clip felt forced and that they had to/have to defend all things Barry O to prove deserved of their liberal, progressive status

but the civil rights photos contrasted with Ferguson should hit home for everyone

I think that was one of the more powerful messages of the film

my anger with the generations before us, being complicit in the B$, is easy to point out with a 50 year rearview

I don't think people realize we just lived through/are living through an era in the US that will be looked on through a 50 year rearview with the same disdain as the civil rights era

I am not a nigger
I am a man
You created the nigger
You need to ask yourselves why
Why do you need niggers

There's alot of other great moments for me, but those were the highlights

and as you said, on a whole, not much difference message wise from What Happened Miss Simone?...still worth the price of admission for the social observation aspect

the Lorraine Hansberry part, how he broke down the absurdity of Bobby Kennedy's timeline for when he felt a "Negro" president would be appropriate, and the question of why you needed a nigger in the first place were the stand outs for me.

I honestly had to roll my eyes at the slow claps during the showing. it seemed forced, like the hand up to god from some church goers when the preacher says something that should stir the spirit.

is what I hope resounds with this audience when leaving the theater

for example, I was in Berkeley partly out of interest in the wake of the 'riots'

I was a little disappointed that there were absolutely no signs of any demonstrations or protests...1 week later.

but walking around that campus, it is painfully obvious there are a lack of black students

there's a line in the movie about the black population growing in SF by 89%

after the movie I went to SF for a Dilla event

and again, just walking around, it should be painfully obvious that there is a lack of black residents

IMO, the reason these types of audiences turn out, is partly what I also stated in my reply above

they are trying to prove how liberal, progressive, open-minded, accepting, etc...that they are

can't live with their liberal pass being revoked

but when they leave that theater, and look around the town they live in

it should be apparent, they are full of shit.

I'm also tired of seeing movies like this, but I think it's necessary to reach that audience

they aren't going to join any black focused movements/causes...for the most part

so this is a less confrontational, controversial way to get informed

what they do with the information is a reflection on them.

for most, I assume it is something to discuss over tea or at the water cooler on monday

...poor shame what we did to those blacks...

but maybe it will really be insightful for some

and that's my hope from cross referencing civil rights with Ferguson

that they'll be able to see this is still happening on their watch

IDK

and i also share these same assumptions. i often wonder, how can something so
white be so 'progressive'? imo, it doesn't seem real and it's all about perception.

fetishizing black history? trying to understand today's crazy racial climate and how we got here? looking to see a viewpoint outside of their own bubble? trying to be down?

People go to see flicks like this for lots of different reasons. On the whole if the movie delivers a true message, like this one sounds like it does, I gotta take heavy attendance by whiteys (and anyone really) as a positive thing.

Mostly white liberal audience. Sam Jack's narration was good, but Baldwin's clips were much more compelling. Besides, Baldwin is meant to be read and re-read. Still, I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I want to watch it again.

I agree with the comments above that I wish there were more clips of Baldwin.

All of the connections it drew through the course of this country's with race were pretty chilling even though it's nothing new.

Two little things:
1.) How about the days on talk shows like the "Dick Cavitt" clips where they actually talked about real shit?

2.) I knew it was Sam Jack

I guess it surprises me that a film called "I Am Not Your Negro" appeals to white people.

Was kinda cool though, made striking a convo with the white dude next time pretty easy

Great film overall, I also feel like I gotta watch it again.

The first 20 minutes or so of the film I thought I had a handle on what would be discussed and how it would be approached. I'm a fan of James Baldwin's writing and thinking. I figured "I can digest this and I probably wont need to see it again". Boy was I wrong.

Many of the scenes discussed above were serious. The RFK discussion and the way Mr. Baldwin exposed the audacity of that man to say when we could possibly have a Black president, that just blew my mind. The interviews were essential to this film though I must say Samuel did a good job. He didn't become a character in the film, he just read the lines. This film made me want to learn more about Medgar Evers, a man who's name is on a college very close to my apartment. I feel like I should know more about him.

When the film was over I was stuck in my chair, unable to move with my eyes fixed on the screen. I saw it with a friend and neither of us looked at each other for a while. I noticed people getting up to leave and how long it took them to do so. Then I saw two groups of people. This all Black group of women were talking about how heavy the movie was but then they started joking and I got disgusted. Another group of white people started laughing at something and again I got disgusted. That was when I told my boy, "I gotta get out of here".

This movie in a way predicted the exact moment I just saw. It was as if James Baldwin was trying to wake us up from the deep slumber of white supremacy and for a minute I was awake in a way that I've never been before. But when I saw the laughter and people having idle chatter it was as if I watched them go right back to sleep. I'm trying my best to stay awake.
