"Doing anything special for the inauguration? How about encryption?"

"And Grove isn’t the only powerful person urging caution. Even the director of the FBI — the same official who recently paid hackers a million dollars to unlock a shooter’s iPhone — is encouraging everyone to cover their webcams.
But you obey the law. What do you have to worry about? As the motto of the United Kingdom’s surveillance program reminds us, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear.”

Definitely use two factor or multifactor authentication where you can. If you have the choice of using a Google authenticator-ish compatible method vs being sent SMS messages, use the authenticator method.

Passcode vs biometrics to unlock your phone. Florida doesn't care (https://www.engadget.com/2016/12/14/florida-court-rules-police-can-demand-your-phones-passcode/). Will this get challenged? Will this spread in Trump's America?

Definitely don't reuse passwords. Online password managers...you gotta balance convenience with security. just remember it's not if, it's when will they get hacked. But also remember the (good) online password manager's security team is going to be waaaay better than your army of one. Just keep an alert for "X got hacked" and have a plan to deal with it.

No qualms with Signal. I think it was audited by some security group and they didn't find anything major. Whatsapp and Facebook's secure messenger uses the Signal protocol...but you can have a secure protocol but have a crappy implementation of it.

Tor...the Feds sent a bunch of kiddie porn peddlers to the pokey by exploiting a vulnerability in the Tor browser.

But the main thing to remember is, if you're running in a pack whose stuff a nation state wants, you're screwed.

your security is really as good as the time you spend thinking about it.

never forget that even if/when you lock literally everything down, your metadata still gives you away. (yeah, you can use encrypted messaging, but if the feds know who you messaged, when, and from where, it's usually not that hard to put together the content)

make sure you have the latest software updates, security holes pop up everyday, and if you're behind, you're probably vulnerable to widely known and available exploits.

please, please don't pirate. basically asking to get yourself hacked.
