One thing I can't do is try to front so that people like (or don't like) me. Fuck it. I played my mom's LP and every needle drop was bland to me.

No need to say it in an insulting way. Let me rephrase: I just don't find her music that funky. I prefer head-nod or dance music.

and 'drop the ball'

she disappeared off my radar, but when she was poppin, she was poppin for ME.

I think she does her numbers. I don't know if we'll ever herald 'that type' of artist the way yt ppl stan for JM; but I do recognize TC as being on par if not superior.

I think for a certain section of blk ppl, acoustic guitar shit with no drums = white and they just aren't gonna tune in. Nixggas discovered Tracy Chapman cuz she was competing with Whitney for a Grammy, otherwise....... LOL

If it were that then damn near every hit pop/rock/rnb artist would be a Joni Mitchell or whomever Joni Mitchell aped

but to be quick about it, someone in the singer-songwriter lyricist tradition, and what that means to most..because now everyone is gonna say "but everyone dman near writes lyrics and sings " blah blah blah..if we are gonna go that route than please let the thread die without any of that bullshit.

Prince and Joni Mitchell are two very different type of artist..you understand that right?

How is this Not Prince? Or very different from what I said enough to make you suck your teeth?

Of course they are very different artist but that doesn't mean that they can't share a trait in common, like being singer-songer writers who are known for genre bending and great lyrics.

I am not sure what you are trying to say, maybe you should put in a little more work articulating.

I never considered that comparison...but Joni's base in folk while venturing into jazz and blues (definitely not soul) kinda mirrors Prince's base in soul while venturing into rock and gospel. With both grounded in songwriting (though Prince is much more of an arranger than Joni).

It's not as ridiculous as it sounds if you know a lot about Joni's career in regards to genre-hopping and dexterity.
