I thought about getting one, but then I also thought about the fact that I like too entertain people and have family come over. My Lady hated the idea, but after seeing a few Tiny Houses she's all, "I want a Tiny House" now.. Anyway that's me.

What about you?

If you've ever watched the Tiny house shows it's also *one* of the couple who wants a Tiny house, and the other is somewhere between bemused and calling a dviorce lawyer.

First - if it has wheels or you can tow it then it's not a house.

Secondly - you linked to Country living site - those aren't small houses those are shacks - used by people like The Unabomber. If you live in the country what's the point of trying to have the smallest space.

Third, the ULTIMATE form of a tiny house is just a coffin.

Turn those things back into snow cone stands and K.I.M.

Seems like we love going from one extreme to the other.

That being said, a tiny home like #6 is perfect for a vacation home. Only makes sense for a tiny home full time if you live in a nice climate like SD and live alone.

http://www.countryliving.com/home-design/house-tours/a35775/daughter-builds-tiny-cottage-for-father/

Itd all about balance IMO. When I hear some of the utility cost for coworkerd who have big homes I cringe.

And you shit in a bucket *basically* that by the size of the house is REAL CLOSE TO YOU.

Outhouses are a better solution - or just a house with plumbing.

I was wondering where you would live if you had one of those. Looks like either out in the wilderness, in someone's backyard, or a trailer park

A lil studio space or something, but not as a main living space. And, definitely not for no full family.

dont think id want to own one of those though. id be too worried about it. what if it rains hard? what if bugs start crawling in from all corners? what if the insulation really sucks? they cool on paper.

owning a house doesnt appeal to me though. id rather rent. im more into micro apartments. im housesitting at my parents and i feel umcomfortable as fuck. too much space. too much to look after. take out the trash and pay the rent... thats the life im about.

A decade seems pretty long for a fad to me. Some folks were just as incredulous about living in them then as some of folks in this thread. It aint for everyone.

I have 3 friends who've built their own and have lived in them since 2007. One of those three also owns a small studio condo he runs a business out of.

I wouldve gone the same route but while I was researching them (and alternatives like earthships, earthbag homes, and teepees) I realized I wanted land- a small homestead to be exact.

A 12x12 cabin similar to this http://www.innermosthouse.com along with a barn/workshop makes more sense for what I want. The mobility of a portable home isnt a priority for me even tho I still consider that a compelling perk.

they just got hot tho about a year ago and now everyone is "thinking" about it but only a few people actually do it.

That cabin looks cute until you realize you can touch everything in those photos while standing in the middle of the room.

I'm a fan of using all the space you have in the house but being able to cook, sleep, eat, bath without taking 3 steps in any direction is over kill

I'd just buy a condo, or an RV, or a boat?
Downtown Brooklyn is now home to the largest modular building - studio apts in it are $3k a month - which after a year, total rent paid prob equals the longevity of a couple living in one of those $40K tiny houses from the shows. They seem like an asset that depreciates. If rather buy a boat to do that. Tons of used large sailboats can be found for less than $40K. Those RV's, repurposed from recycled school busses, seem like the cost efficient strategy, I'm nearly always impressed by those on the shows when they take a break and profile them instead.

a studio in Brooklyn is all about supply and demand & location

a tiny home on wheels is basically an RV.

i couldn't do it but I def. see why some people like them. They tend to be the outdoor/loner types. seems like all their friends also own tiny homes or live that minimalist lifestyle.

A tiny house would've been dope back then, especially if I could buy it for cheap. The closest we have here in Philly are trinity houses:
http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/philadelphias-trinity-houses-are-the-original-tiny-houses
http://www.phillymag.com/property/2015/08/06/philadelphia-trinity-house/

These are basically one room per floor with a staircase in the corner. Back then it would've been enough space and simple to maintain, but I probably would have outgrown it by my mid-20s. I think the concept is dope for starter houses and for older single adults.

So a tiny house wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

That said, I'd probably go prefab cabin on a grip of land, and just have cookouts and bonfires all the time: http://coventryloghomes.com/ourDesigns/cabinSeries/Explorer/model.html

An insider came through with data that shows it costs more to build a tiny house than it does an actual house.

Tiny houses are a genius idea for real estata agents in big cities. The examples listed in this post cite tiny houses as small as 136 square feet. There are roughly 861 square feet in the average apartment in the USA. Quick arithmetic tells us roughly 6 136 square feet apartments can fit in one average US apartment. Let's assume that one average US apartment contains 244 units of normal size. This means you can charge 1,952 at least $450 a month for rent on the low end. Let that sink in for a second: Instead of getting paid by 244 people per month you get 1,952 people to pay you.

I'd do it if I was 19 because it's a fun idea that would in theory save costs if rent was reduced. If 675 square feet is say $445 a month then half of that should be less... but we live in a capitalist economy. Could you survive on less living space for a dramatically reduced living cost?

People have cut that figure in half (or more) by doing some or all of the labor in getting their unit built, using second-hand/ reclaimed materials, and exploring energy (heating/cooling) sources that aren't typically used in most stick and frame houses.

I think it is an outlier ideas needed to convince people they can live with less (space) a la the Minimalism doc..

People seem to be wanting to move back to cities (not just la & ny) so smaller houses/apts need to be built to meet that demand.

I mean most of these houses for sale IN LA are under 2k sq ft and people pay 1m for em and love em... so clearly the upwardly mobile dont NEED the space...

If you have some land and a smaller house could be an awesome project to add some personal space in backyard or an office/studio etc..

Plus, as a few people I know have found out, their legal standing for where you can park them differ from municipality to municipality. One friend built this really cute, artistic as shit two story one, landed in all these design publications, but the city she lives in basically is saying she can only legally live in it if it's in a trailer park or RV camp ground since they aren't built on a long-term foundation.
OOPS.

Not because they are cheap but because they are attracted to the alternative lifestyle.

Everyone I know who is flirting with it has money, land, nice house, etc...

You can't buy a tiny house without a nice chunk of cash on hand. It's like buying a smart car that cost 15K.

But the outside space that apartments do have usually sucks (if there's any at all). Plus, at the price we're talking, the apartment will probably be noisy too. At least the tiny home folks can go outside and chill without having to hear neighbors stomping around above them.

The worst thing about apartments and condos is having to share the building.

I don't see it that way at all.

In 5 years you would definitely spend more in an apt. Only extra expense I see with a tiny home is having a car or finding somewhere to park it.

renting land?

You going to pay 300 a month for land and hook up like you would at a trailer park, but have upkeep similar to a house.

On a cost per sq foot basis all in, I think you'd do better with an apartment.

You can't go to the other room and chill out. You walk to the other side of the house you still see em. Everything they do getting on your nerves. Hear em breathing on the other side of the tiny house just making you wanna do something crazy cause you already irritated as shit.

Can't even play a proper game of hide and seek. Bathroom so small you can take a shit, wash your hands, and soak your feet all at the same time.

Fuck a tiny house
