‘TRAUMATIZED CITY’: More Than 50 People Shot In Chicago During Christmas Holiday
City on track to top murder toll of New York and Los Angeles combined.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/chicago-holiday-shootings_us_5861c2b4e4b0de3a08f5f8dc

Chicago continued its horrifying parade of violence over the Christmas holiday with 57 shootings and at least 12 dead.

Several surviving victims were seriously or critically injured and battling for their lives, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The gun violence from Friday to Monday evening surpassed the steep shooting tally over the holiday last year, when 30 people were shot and six died.

Seven people were shot in a single incident on Sunday after a man emerged from an alley and opened fire on a family party at a home in the city’s crime-wracked East Chatham neighborhood, CBS Chicago reported. When the shooting finally stopped, James Gill, 18, lay dead with a bullet to the head. His 21-year-old brother, Roy Gill, died later at a local hospital. The shooter escaped.

One 40-year-old man was cut down by multiple bullets outside the Apostolic Labor of Love Church; he later died at the hospital.

The bloody holiday weekend began Friday night with five teenagers shot within feet of each other in the city’s South Austin neighborhood. All survived.

“We have a traumatized city,” said Susan Johnson who runs Chicago Survivors, a group that counsels the families of murder victims. She told NPR that people were living “hair-trigger” lives with anger issues “as a result of living in trauma and in violence.”

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson called the toll a “reprehensible number of shootings and murders.” If “anyone thinks this is okay or it’s normal, then you’re wrong, because it’s not okay and it’s not normal,” he said at a press conference Monday.

Police attributed most of the violence to gang warfare.

“These were deliberate and planned shootings by one gang against another,” Johnson said, per CNN. “They were targeted knowing fully well that individuals would be at the homes of family and friends celebrating the holidays. This was followed by several acts of retaliation.”

Ninety percent of those killed had gang affiliation and criminal histories, law enforcement authorities said. They were “pre-identified by the department’s strategic subject algorithm as being a potential suspect or victim of gun violence,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Tribune.

Police confiscated 45 guns over the weekend, the Chicago police superintendent said. He pleaded with politicians to enact stricter gun control laws and harsher penalties for repeat gun violence offenders.

The number of homicides in the city so far this year has hit 768, compared with 492 at the same time last year. It’s the first time since 1997 that there have been more than 700 gun violence homicides, the Chicago Tribune noted.

The number of shooting victims this year reached 4,307, compared with 2,989 at this time last year. Most of the victims were men under 30.

The homicide rate for the country’s 30 biggest cities is expected to rise 14 percent this year, with Chicago accounting for 44 percent of that increase, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

The number of murders in Chicago for 2016 is on course to top that of Los Angeles and New York City combined.

I'm so sick of these "Why are they tripping in Chicago" questions.

It's gang-related. Gangbangers kill each other. The end.

Lock them up and keep it moving.

Mayor Daley didn't help by tearing down every single high rise project in the city.

Cabrini-Green. Robert Taylor. Stateway Gardens. Rockwell Gardens. Ida B. Wells. Harold Ickes. Henry Horner. That's a lot of fucking projects.

He unleashed hundreds, if not *thousands* of gangbangers onto the city streets that never left their buildings except to go to court, or Taste of Chicago in the summertime.

Glad I never voted for him.

For what it's worth, Chicago gangs typically don't bother the non-gangbanging public. None of that "where you from" shit that they do in L.A. Most of the people getting bodied in Chicago are also gang dudes and career criminals.

In response to Reply # 4

b/c these dudes wouldn't have been allowed to live in the projects. but i dunno.

btw - the murder rate was much HIGHER here when the projects were still standing.

anyway, Indiana's lax gun laws make it easy for folks to either cross the border and get a gun or for hustlers to go over and come back w/guns to sell. tightening that up might help.

i generally don't advocate for increased police power or prosecutorial power to fix the problem b/c i'm such a believer in civil liberties and ppl's human rights and all of that.

decrease the availability of guns and get on the ground w/the folks who are committing all of the violence and ask them how we can help them resolve the conflicts that result in the shootings might help. i dunno. plenty of the shooting is about ppl being or at least feeling disrespected (personal slights that erupt into gun play). sure some of the shooting is also about illegal drug sales - LEGALIZE IT and open up job opportunities (not necessarily in the drug sales) and work w/these kids to improve their sense of self worth and the value of their communities...maybe they'll have incentive to find other ways to resolve conflicts that don't involve shooting.

but i dunno really. i hope to fly away out of all of this.

fuck you.

where else do you see that ^ combination of factors in Illinois but Chicago, the south suburbs of Chicago and East St. Louis?

note: we don't even see the shooting all over Chicago. it's isolated in a few neighborhoods - the ones w/the combination of factors i listed above.

So those 3 factors IN ADDITION to proximity to an area with lax gun laws?

That makes more sense than anything else I've heard...or at least provides an explanation for why it's worse there than NY or LA. Both of which could satisfy the first three criteria.

At least the 48 states on the continent. Mississippi is 8 hours from Chicago... a round-trip can be done in a day. Blame-shifting things to the next state over is just that. Attempts to gain political power. New York City politicians do the same thing.

Funny enough, New York City is seeing the lowest numbers of gun murders in decades, and I95 is still wide-open for bringing guns to the city from down south.

We both know that hug comes with some manipulative bullshit to get me to part with a cash donation toward a G6, a Bugatti, or that purely innocent, debauchery-free "mission trip" to the Dominican Republic.

How does me cracking on churches and their clergy being emotionally manipulative vultures equate to me 'needing a hug' or being unable to smile?

That's a typical deflection tactics, rev: if someone expresses a problem with all shady shit in the church, there's something wrong with them, not the shady shit in the church.

I'm not sure why you can't just roll with a light and cynical jab at the church.

It breaks my heart when I read and see stories like this because we are losing a generation of young black men who could be the next geniuses of the world. And it spurs on the negative stereotypes that many of our young people embrace along with the world, which in turn causes a lack of empathy and support for the community.

Clinton did that in the 90s.

How'd that turn out for us?

btw, Emperor Trump and the GOP Congress would LOVE nothing more than authorization from the Blacks to let the police loose in our communities and to lock our young men away in corporate funded prisons for the rest of their natural lives. 'What've you got to lose??' so what you proposed is likely going to happen and the Chicago murder rate could be the justification. i hope not but i can see them doing it.

Here is an actual headline that appeared in the New York Times this week: Prison Rate Was Rising Years Before 1994 Law.

It is an unusual departure for a newspaper, since what is being reported here is not news but history – or, rather, a particular interpretation of history. The “1994 Law” to which the headline refers is the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act; the statement about the “prison rate” refers to the fact that America was already imprisoning a large portion of its population before that 1994 law was approved by Congress.

fuck you.

and it seems like back in the 90s we fell for the okey-doke - b/c our communities were torn up w/violence due to the crack epidemic and we wanted SOMETHING done so plenty of our Congressional reps signed on in support of that crime bill and it ended up decimating our communities even further. so i caution against us turning to police and prosecutors to fix the violence problem in our communities. b/c while the violence MIGHT be curbed a bit that can create a host of new problems that result in new violence down the road. or some other problem(s) we can't foresee.

but i'm w/you - it seems like locking them up is an easy fix.

America gives certain sections of black people in big cities next to nothing, they're then told "survive the best way you can", this leads to predator like behavior

said people also feel territorial over blocks they dont own, (perceived) disrespect leads to violent conflict. violent conflict leads to retaliation and there's an ongoing cycle

greater opportunities wont solve the issue, but they're a start. from what I can tell, Chance The Rapper seems to be doing a lot for his city

*it's happening in Chicago, but it's happening in North Philly, Wisconsin, Atlanta, Brooklyn, etc. it might be more condensed in a relatively small area of Chicago though

it's statistically the most violent big city, which is an issue in and of itself but the same problem exists across the country

You just have to say something, even if it's a completely nonsensical conclusion with no basis in reality. You have to respond.

Yet, here you are with several empty responses that are not at all rooted in reality.

>You always have something negative to say, always have
>something rude to say. What's wrong with you?

What did I say to you that was "rude"?
What have I said in here that illustrates "anger"?

As far as this “always have something negative to say” bit, that’s a conveniently vague generalization.

You don’t address the validity of what I said, just that it’s “negative”.

Whether or not what I say is “negative” is absolutely immaterial.

The only thing that matters is whether or not what I say has merit.

When people such as yourself have a hard time refuting the validity of something, they fall back on vague generalities like “negative” rather than discuss the merit of the point being made.

In terms of you specifically, you’re a picture perfect illustration of my jab at the emotional manipulation employed by members of the church: When faced with criticism, you ignore the criticism entirely and deflect fault onto the person who voiced said criticism.

You also chose to derail your own thread because you couldn’t take a cynical crack about “god” not being the solution without falling back on your clerical programming; it wasn’t that “god” isn’t the solution, it’s that I don’t smile, as if that made any sense at all.

If you want to ask what’s wrong with anyone, you should ask yourself why you continue to derail your own thread on an important discussion with an empty ass argument where you just spew nonsensical rhetoric. Don’t get me wrong, I’m perfectly happy to help you trash your own thread.

Any more ridiculous questions?

1. the educational, financial, and social resources are purposely kept out or withheld to the extent needed in order to maintain a success rate of 1/3rd (or less) among blacks in relation to whites in perpetuity

2. the majority of the dominant culture is anti black and targets the poorest of black people as part ritual and part commerce. This anti blackness is varying combinations of inherent and cultivated via social networks and virtually all non black owned outlets

3. Viable chances for cultural success among black people is dependent upon an individuals ability to educate, integrate, and emulate among the dominant culture with the options and access to those opportunities largely determined by chance, grace, or grit.

and those most at risk need to be as distanced from their environment as possible.Something like 7 day a week after school programs targeting the youth.

Then you have folks go into the community and try to inform adults about the nature of the system and the importance of putting their youth into the above type of programs.

whatever approach taken would require a lot of self sacrifice, dedication, and financial resources from non white and perhaps even non american entities. That is the biggest challenge IMO.

the ones who need it the most...won't use, be receptive to, and/or be able to

you can reach some of the kids via that route

but the killers are 18-24...they need another alternative 'institution' like the military

of course jobs too but we gonna be waitin on them till February 31st

education is just where I would start. For the killers -- construction, trade jobs, specialized vehicle training, security / para military, are likely the best type of work outlets, but how to get a viable number trained and employed is the challenge there (as I see it from my armcahir) lol.

If I had the means I would train folks in those disciplines coupled with a language skill and then plant them in countries/environments which could provide the best opportunities for success.

funny you say this...I had a similar idea

like send niccas over to Haiti for a stretch to help out with rebuilding

disaster relief organizations I'm sure could use the manpower
hell...create our own

but yeah...this is along my lines of thinking

It just requires capital and people committed to the plan something like

maybe a black owned resort, built by black folks trained up here and then organized into a construction company to handle subsequent projects in Haiti. Staff the resort with locals and some American blacks, earnings go to education services here and in Haiti.

Store arms in a secret basement, provide self defense training among the staff, begin a Haitian youth program, etc...

of the non white party over time. Basically the relationship always tends to dictate that whatever opportunities are made available will be so for a select few as opposed to within reach of half or half.

To be plain it is never viewed or accepted as being in the best interest of whites to support the equality of blacks.

Chi OKPs: has it become part of daily life where it's like "oh, more shootings" ??

Or is it being acknowledged as a crisis, leading every newscast, front page news, all over radio...aka putting pressure on city hall?

Or is it like in the wire: wrong zip code. They're dead where it doesn't matter.

We have a low boil dope boy gang war in Miami Gardens, North Miami Beach areas and while it's not Chiraq levels, kids are dying.
But it's all reactive. The classic sad nobody gives a shit until a little girl gets killed in a playground.

what can City Hall do but send in more police and lock up more niggas?

yay?

anyway, it's on the news. it's the lead story. lots of hand wringing. lots of shots of the face of community activists (there are several but one guy gets all the news coverage) saying "y'all know who's doing this shooting/help us out and turn them in/you know you shot somebody, turn yourself in". lots of shots of the police superintendent saying "we know who's doing the shooting but our hands are tied by the law - we can't just go arrest 'em and when we do they get let go b/c of the law". lots of shots of families of the 'innocent' bystanders crying and saying they never thought they'd be on tv crying about violence and "stop the violence, y'all". sometimes we see Jesse Jackson talking about stopping the killing and having a vigil. sometimes we see Father Pfleger fired up and hosting a march. there's always a body count and a report that this year there were more shootings than last year.

wash rinse repeat.

I'm really confused at how people don't understand the "why"

Like....all you hear is "OH, THE VIOLENCE!!"....

Here's a map.

Chicago's violence was pretty much contained by the housing projects in various parts of the cities. There was still "violence" mind you...but it was cordoned off into specific areas where lack of access to the things that have been mentioned (healthcare/equal wages/education) was the norm.

Problem is...those project buildings were in prime real estate territory when Chicago began to expand.

So they tear down the projects...residents scatter in every direction EXCEPT where the rent is prohibitive. That means West Side, Englewood, South Shore, Washington Park, the area between Chicago Proper and Evanston/Skokie (Terror Town), all the near South Suburbs (Dolton/Harvey/Calumet City)...

Chicago has strict neighborhood boundaries to schools. So if you live in a blighted community, your neighborhood school sucks. Period.

Let's take a very interesting example...Ray Elementary.

Now TECHNICALLY...Ray Elementary is a Magnet School, but it also has boundary lines wherein if you live within said boundaries, you are slated to attend. Ray is located spitting distance from University of Chicago...which was smack dab in the middle of one of the wildest neighborhoods in Chicago (to the South) and one of the most affluent on the South Side (to the North) until U of Chicago began buying back all the property and gentrifying the fuck out of the area.

Now Ray's boundaries should encompass a little bit of both of those communities...making it a community melting pot. But FUCK and THAT....Ray draws it's admission map specifically to cut out all of the economic blight. You live South of the Midway? Let them fuck with this plastic. In short...boundaries to protect access to opportunity.

Add in the property fiefdoms. A prominent city comedian, George Wilborn, recently made a huge fuss about buying a home in an area that borders Bronzeville to the west called Bridgeport.

Bridgeport is where the Daley power structure was based. They don't fuck with NOTHING that fails the college ruled paper test...FUCK a paper bag.

Found out he was a nigga? Put the kibosh on the whole shit. Quick.

Kids are still being mugged for walking thru that neighborhood...which is literally surrounded by Black (East) and Brown (West).

Shesus and I were looking for a place...found a developer that was renting property and his flunky leasing agent had us sign a lease for a place in the HEART of Bridgeport.

When I tell you that them crackers were on their porch scowling at us when we walked in...but I gave no fucks I smiled right back and waved like "GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, BITCH!"

Property Owner calls me in a frenzy like "Dude...I can't do that to you. If I put you in that home, the safety of yourself and your family will be at risk...so I'm going to upgrade you to a property that is right next to my office on the main strip at the same price"

That's the way the city works, B. Either you on the inside or on the outside.

If your parents don't have the sense to teach you a bit and play the system to get you into a better school...you're fucked.

And trust me...this is the short version

The only thing that will stop the spread of what's going on in Chicago is comprehensive mental health, financial and educational services. Resources need to be poured into the areas affected in order to begin to stem the tide of neglect that's been plaguing that city for generations.

And there is no profit in that.

There is no profit in an informed, educated and inspired underclass.

You know what there IS a profit in? Policing.

And media coverage.

And small business loans to foreigners who then sell poor nutritional items to the neighborhood.

There is big money in food deserts.

The only way that shit is going to change is if someone with the capital to change it takes it on as their own personal mission, invests all of their capital in order to begin to lay the foundation for the change.

And it has to happen for GENERATIONS.

So, no...there ain't no way it's being fixed. Not in my lifetime, or my children's lifetime. There's no WIN for the system in it.

The best you can do is provide small outlets so that those who want to seek to change it can...but you ain't breaking the poverty cycle and escaping alive.

Even talking about it is a waste of time. Just being honest.

The media's cultural impact has a very strong influence on the mentality of the "hood" and how people respond to life, self-esteem and identity.

Look at all of the dudes from nice towns or suburbs that emulate thugs (at least in looks/mannerisms) even tho they don't live that life. Dudes in the hood are the same way. There is positive reinforcement of the criminal lifestyle that exists in the music that a lot of young dudes listen to and it definitely has an effect.

It's something to aim for.

Like, not to be that guy, you can't really read DVS's summary at the top and not be surprised that Chief Keef was an idol. You've got kids who are in households where generations have passed without a high school diploma(!!!)...struggling in a sub par school/balancing extra curricular activities to grow up to become an investment banker is a foreign concept (nor is it anything anyone would be able to grasp at 12).

But a shooter who's got a brand new PS4 pro, call of duty and fresh j's? Achievable even if you're dead a month later.

It's why the 'music/games' glorify this stuff argument dies.

but with the invention of the gun, more people were killed at a higher rate. The advent of new technology has always advanced the good and the band, in science, industry, culture, etc.

Oh and BTW cultural influences has always impacted identity one identity and it has played a major role in the condition and mindset of people all over the world.

No one said this, but if imagery was not a factor then why has every invading culture always sought to destroy the conquered nations imagery and identity.

Why? BECAUSE IT MATTERS!

with something slick to say?. Like I really don't get your intentions. Sometimes a OKP dig or a side joke is cool, but you like doing the most.

And before you answer, just pause and think about your actions and motivations for a second. We could really be cool and still have different opinions on some matters. I'd like that. So let's change the course of action in 2017 and have a more pleasant relationship.

of what drives the culture. sure seeing bum rappers on the internet will get a lil attention from youngins, but that gang banger, who is somebody's cousin or uncle, walking the block will have more immediate effects on the kid peeping on the window.

its more about real life exposure to shit that's not right outside the door vs what's on tv/radio.

Non-merchant gun sellers, at shows and such, can recirculate guns purchased from out of state with no background check or volume limit and those guns can/do get reclassified as having Illinois origins. Of all the out of state guns used in the commission of a crime and confiscated by police between 2010-2014, 31% or 3,269 came directly from Indiana with no recirculation in Illinois. I'm not sure if there are studies that track where all the downstate gun nuts "collector" dealers at gun shows are getting their stock, but it's not hard to imagine that Indiana, where all you have to practically have is a pulse and not be currently drunk, is a major source.

the library is being built here though and apparently Tiger Woods is working on a PGA-level golf course for the same neighborhood. that neighborhood already hosts The University of Chicago so it doesn't exactly need gentrifying but it is being built up and that has nothing to do w/the library or the golf course.

Illinois is one of the 7 states whose population is going down. I am sure that being viewed as a crime ridden city (even if its localized) isnt helping.

"Chicago's population decrease is very bad news. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cook County's population dropped in 2015, marking the area's first decline since 2007. Data shows that Cook County lost 10,488 residents in between 2014 and 2015—the steepest drop recorded in any county in the nation.Mar 24, 2016"

Considering its the exact OPPOSITE trend happening in the other major US cities and considering Chicago's strong standing as far as a wide variety of industries are concerned, it's ripe as fuck. If I was a young white creative id love to move there, lol.

You would think we wouldnt have some of the poorest residents fighting to keep social services and schools open and operating sufficiently(mold, lead, outdated books) because the City is crying broke.
Where is the money going?
Alot of people in chicago government are afraid to ask and pretty much write Rahm a blank check.
Not including new taxes for 2017.
Our taxes are taxed.(see taxes like the garbage fee:

So gentrification is happening and no one is asking where the money is going.
