"Rogue One was much better than expected."

It's dope that they showed the fucked up morality of both the Rebels and the Empire. For a good portion of this movie it lives in a grey zone. It puts the war in Star Wars

The third act is incredible, those reshoot rumors now seem over the top in retrospect. It gets emotional heavy by the end.

This has one of the best Darth Vader moments of the series hand down.

This is probably the best looking Star Wars. Some of the imagery is beautiful.

Some of the cameos felt like fan service to be honest.

If I had to rank these so far it'd be:

4&5
R.O.

2

3

More when y'all see it cause anymore and it'd be spoiler territory.

But will anybody care about this movie in a year from now? I don't hear diddley about the star wars movie from last year. All this shit is just so transient to me. Maybe I'm a snob...but for all the excitement these movies generate...you'd think they would have some sort of shelf-life. How much more artistic value do these things have compared to 'Days of Our Lives'? Ohhhhh...don't spoil it but Hans Solo dies.

If a basic plot spoiler ruins the movie....it's probably not much of a movie in the first place. Like I said...I'm grumpy lol. I just resent the fact that Hollywood doesn't make my beloved drama films anymore. And even in the action genre...people talked about the first Alien movie for years afterwards. Because it's a great movie. The shit today is just so disposable to me. And people will tell me 'Nah man...this new X-men 4 movie is different from the rest. This one really sticks out'. And they never do. Plus....they look like cartoons. Hate is a muscle.

For real though....It's an interesting question....which of these movie franchises won't be dated and completely irrelevant in 30 years? People still watch Alien when they show it on AMC. I don't really dig Nolan but I'd guess his Batman trilogy might fare comparatively well against everything else. I also have hopes for the Apes reboot. Harry Potter might be in the conversation. Perhaps the Matrix. I kinda like the Star Trek reboot but I think the look of them will be so dated later on with all the stupid visual effects. In that regard...I could watch 'Alien' with the sound off and marvel at the set design and cinematography. What say you?

What about Mad Max: Fury Road? Everyone still talks about that one. Moonlight is my favorite film of 2016 and even that isn't coming close to Fury Road.

I didn't like the film much but it is very technical and it doesn't look like a cartoon. Are they planning on making more? I can see that withstanding the test of time just because the look of it doesn't follow the same trends. I definitely respected the technical aspects of that film. Not enough story for me but to be fair, that's obviously not what they're going for and it doesn't pretend to be something it's not.

Another thing I'd say about it....the choreography of the action was REALLY good and I could actually follow what was happening. These other comic book movies...I often have no idea what's occuring during the action scenes. I just wait til the dust settles and see who's still alive. I wonder if that's a common thing that people just keep to themselves? If I were genuinely trying to follow a marvel movie I would annoy the shit out of my comic-book crazed family with constant questions as to what exactly is happening. Shit looks to me like a colored strobe light for the most part.

I'm grateful for these movies in a way because the rest of family loves the shit outta them. So I see alot of them. Don't watch em but I see em lol. I've learned to enjoy cat-napping under 3d glasses knowing everyone is together and having fun. A little Air Hockey....mini-hoops.

When who knows. I don;t blame him for taking a break since the Fury Road shoot was notoriously troubled and long.

Plus the first two Mad Max films are shown on the reg in theaters and on TV. So

Fury Road might be it.

Alien 3 could 'kinda' be considered a reboot of sorts and thereby a very good one. Can't think of many other ones that got it so right. It's early...but I think Creed is up to there too. Funny how the goal of a reboot is to not be a reboot.

What the fuck are you talking about shelf life, do you know how much money the lure of a Star Wars fucking makes LOL People are still buying those toys off the shelf especially with the tv show going on. You just sound bitter and old. The writing and acting was never the best part of the movies, but they some how made that shit work. Han dying may have been a simple plot spoiler but that's not why there was so much talk about it, it's because it's an iconic character from a huge property. Smh

I'm talking about the reboot. And I'd suggest in 10 years the reboot won't be perceived to be PART of the original trilogy. Like the Predator reboot is not really Predator. Or the new Terminators are not the same as the first two. Or Indiana Jones Crystal Skull. I'll bet in 10 years there's a NEW reboot that ignores THIS reboot lol.

it's a prequel, just like episodes 1-3 were prequels, not reboots. and episode 7 wasn't a reboot either, it was set decades after the first 6.

The magic in the storytelling of these Star Wars films (or most fantasy/drama films nowadays) are gone. Mainly for those of us who grew up in that era of where there was a special feeling that we felt after coming out of a Star Wars film or a film of its ilk. The prequels/reboots, whatever people want to call it -- it all feels detached from what it once was. Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. So I get what Denny is saying. Transient is a good way to describe it.

The Force Awakens and the new sequel trilogy is WAY better than the prequel trilogy so far, and that prequel triolgy from over 10 years ago is still seen as the same level of canon as the original films.

And not still talked about? They just did a second blu-ray release of TFA last month (3D, plus JJ Abrams commentary) and that release did numbers just because people are mining his commentary for clues on some of the character backgrounds that he left a mystery. TFA was the biggest grossing film in the US ever. They aren't gonna just ignore that later and "reboot" the franchise.

That's why I love that they are doing stuff like that. It may feel like fan service to the average fan of the movies for the people following the overall storyline in the books, comics and tv show this makes everything fit in the world of Star Wars better. That's the one thing I hate about Marvel and DC, any story can change and have any actor be a character whether it's the movie, comics, video games...continuity doesn't exist in those worlds. Why do I need Hulk to be Korean now? I'm Asian and even I think that shit is stupid. I don't need to connect to Hulk. LOL

In response to Reply # 0

are there quite a few nods to it? I want to watch Rebels but haven't had time to get caught up so still on first season about mid way thru.

I was a little disappointed they dropped Force Unleashed from canon as I was with a lot of the novels, especially the Thrawn stuff but glad they brought him back into Rebels, look forward to seeing that.

What is this..like the 3rd or 4th film about the death star?
Surely there is something else to anchor a Star Wars film.

The best parts of ep 4 and ep 6, and of course the whole ep5 movie had nothing to do with a Death Star. I even think the stories in The Clone Wars cartoons were better than Death Star related stuff. I'm still hyped about this movie, though.

Vader just disposing all those rebels in his path. Gave me chills.

And Leia. I stood on the edge of my seat for a sec, thinking "OMG...how's she gonna look?!??" And the CGI was immaculate.

And Tarkin!!!

Yeah, best special fx by far of any Star Wars movie.

that shit was perfect. The way they shot it was reminiscent of the original, but so much more hardcore.

It was like a John Woo Hong Kong style scene from Hard Boiled or The Killer.

This had a very very real-world feeling overall, very little of that dreamy fantasy ancient fairytale vibe I love about Star Wars. There were a few notable exceptions though.

But for what it was, it was absolutely incredible

I enjoyed that movie but I didn't like it, if you know what I mean.

I've only scanned a couple reviews but I've seen several references, even in middling reviews, to it being a more singular, unique movie than Force Awakens was and less reliant on the original trilogy despite being even more laser focused on its particulars.

I'm excited to see this, the trailers are way better than the trailers were for TFA for me as well and I hope that "knowing what happens" can lead to some genuinely interesting twists as to the HOW of it.

shit's a samurai movie and normandy film and a lucas/spielberg/expanded universe reboot wet dream all rolled together and even the cheesy fan service isn't too bad

and i get why it started slow. imo there's only one scene that should have been cut.

It could have been a fucking perfect movie, but the first hour is almost a complete waste of time. Time that could have been spent establishing who these characters are, including pivotal characters like Bail Organa (I haven't seen that dude since 2005, why am I just expected to know who he is?) and why we care about them is instead wasted introducing a Save Your Dad angle and a totally confusing Forest Whitaker character. A great movie wouldn't just assume everyone in the audience reads the comics, novels and watches the cartoons; not being one of those people, the first half made me feel left out and a little bored. Jyn's character turn from skeptical and jaded to all-in is rushed, as is Bodie's (?) transition from driven insane to regular ass hero guy again, lending more credence to the whole Forest Whitaker subplot being a waste of time.

Once the battle gets rolling both Gareth Edwards and the script seem to be totally in their element, but even moments of that felt just rushed enough that you wish the movie were an hour and a half of that with little of the exposition shoehorned into the front half. We know this is a movie about stealing the plans to the Death Star, and we know why the Death Star is bad and why we want those plans. Jyn doesn't need the rebellious young adult locked up in jail and jaded because her family was killed by the Empire but also her father basically designed the Death Star angle for us to root for her; we root for her because she's the reason Luke knows where to put those proton torpedoes and indirectly one of the biggest heroes the galaxy's ever seen.

I really enjoyed the movie because I just love the aesthetic of Star Wars, but there's a classic film hiding here that begins with Jyn being given her mission to retrieve those plans and everything jumping off from there and going into more detail about who her team is and what goes into strategizing breaking into the Imperial Space Station Planning Commission or whatever it's called rather than wasting all that time on inconsequential stuff and characters that will only appear in this one film. I wish Rogue One were more focused on the task at hand rather than attempting to establish a universe around it. Again, fantastic ending (Vader!) with a few flaws I feel could have been mitigated by spending less time on exposition unrelated to stealing the blueprints.

Faux Solo was lame, too.

End to end burner, and I'm surprised at how much I cared about the characters even though the character development was on the fly. Forrest Whitaker was a really effective supporting actor choice.

I think I liked it better than Force Awakens. Also I saw it in a "Dolby Cinema" theater at an AMC for the first time. I dont ever want to see movies the "regular" way ever again. Had amazing reclining seats with vibration motors in them, insane sound, and a giant, outstanding screen. More of that please.

The ending was poignant given yesterdays news as well.
