"OKAdvice - getting married for her parents"

So, i tried to write out the whole story, and it got too convoluted cuz there's a lot going on.

Basically, how does OKP feel about getting married cuz some of the parents think its a religious obligation before being able to live together? (in the context of a couple who is committed but not really focusing on formalizing).

*asking for a friend*

Don't get married until you are ready for marriage or just ignore the parents and move in.

If you jump out of this situation, you end up in the spikes at the bottom

if you stay in the slot machine, you end up in the spikes at the bottom.

No offense, but she aint shit either because she could give you a cheat code and tell her parents she isnt ready for all that.

But she probably envious of those wedding planning books so she threw your ass on the spikes to get the rings up out you.

Yeah, she should have her man's back and be a team with him, and not let her parents start tapping that wedge.

>But she probably envious of those wedding planning books so
>she threw your ass on the spikes to get the rings up out you.

If she's not shutting it down, then she's giving her tacit approval of her parents' methods.

Of course, there could be cultural issues at play here, but if they are in the US then the culture is irrelevant. The government don't care about culture when it comes to bad marriages and divorce settlements.

If so why not. If the parents want to formalize something they have already agreed to. Sure.

there are benefits to being married compared to living together long term (if you've already been committed for a while).

- less chance for her to have children and be single
- tax breaks
- cheaper healthcare (if at least one works)

her fam is muslim, and the marriage they're demanding is Katb al-Kitab - a religious ceremony that's actually not tied at all to US law, but recognized by Islam and also her v large extended fam.

also, basically already living together. not jumping any guns there, just tryina make it work respecting the fam.

"""
An Islamic marriage contract (Arabic Katb el-Kitab, Hebrew Ketubah, Urdu Nikah-Nama) is an Islamic prenuptial agreement. It is a formal, binding contract considered an integral part of an Islamic marriage, and outlines the rights and responsibilities of the groom and bride or other parties involved in marriage proceedings.
"""

I still wouldn't do it, but if it's legally non-binding and they are in the US then they should follow their hearts. From what you posted it sounds like he isn't too into it tho.

Be sensitive, but you can't live your life by the rules of an older generation you don't entirely agree with.

We have to stay in a hotel when we visit my girl's Mom in NC because she doesn't like us sharing a bed in her house - she gets zero say over how we sleep in OUR house and she's accepted that easily enough.

Older folks seem like they don't fully grasp how much the world has changed in recent decades. Some of their advice is outdated and potentially dangerous.
