"NY OKP's - Help for a tourist"

Last minute advice! I'll be in NYC this week on holiday coming from London.

got most of the stuff mapped out that I'm looking to but I've got some questions for OKP's favourite places...what is your advice on:

- Food spots
- Best soul food spots
- What to see in Harlem (most british guides have neglected here)
- Performance venues - so far the Nuyorican poets cafe looks good
- Any extra things for a young couple that the guides wouldn't mention

Extra note, i'm staying in the Lower East Side but happy to travel around

Let's start from here. Hop on the F train, get off at York in Brooklyn, walk through Dumbo. Here you can get Grimaldi's...famous NYC pizza that people seem to love (me it's not worth it though). Right next door there is a Shake Shack...another popular nyc tourist destination until they opened up everywhere, that tends to have M-U-C-H shorter lines. This covers eating in the area, but the main reason why I recommend it is its got the best sightlines of NYC BY FUCKING FAR ...for example:

https://a2.muscache.com/locations/uploads/photo/image/383/0_4200_0_2800_one_manhattan-bridge-jbk018.jpg

Opinions on food in NYC's is a tough once since its the epitome of a foodie town. You're going to have people recommend you 3 michelin stars restaurants and hole in the wall ethnic joints. My favorite Soul Food joints are currently these two:

http://www.carlahallsouthernkitchen.com/

A little out of the way, but still close to Downtown Brooklyn.

http://streetbirdnyc.com/

One of Marcus Sammuelsson's restaurants in Harlem and my favorite...its a solid low in the cut time.

Speaking of Marcus's restaurants, might as well go to Red Rooster since its basically the big Harlem destination. While you're there, try to catch some jazz in the basement at Ginny's Supper Club. You can also go to the Studio Museum in Harlem to see art by black people (check to make sure if they've got exhibitions tho, last time I went they closed up most of the museum), and I would also recommend the Shomberg if they've got something happening that week:

https://www.nypl.org/about/locations/schomburg

BACK TO BROOKLYN:

Thanks to Dubai esque manhattan rents, it seems most of the big live venues outside of jazz spots have moved to BK. They are mainly roving parties trying to avoid getting too much attention but if you want to go listen to some solid techno, Output is great. And while there is a London outpost, Brooklyn Bowl is always good, particularly on a thursday.

GO TO QUEENS:
Flushing Queens is a cornucopia of great asian eats; its well worth a food trek out there.

TAKE A FERRY TO STATEN ISLAND
Just to go see the statue of liberty (not worth going actually inside) and it's free. Then hop right back in since that's all that's worth seeing there, lol.

After that, NYC's the kind of city where you want to stumble onto things. Id just figure out what neighborhoods you want to go to and just walk around anyplace that isn't Time Square.

If you can eat spice....this is the spot. To me its a great quintessential NY hole in the wall ethnic spot.

local roots, eaten by famous folks, cheap, good, and speaks to the immigrant experience in the City. Its Chinese, but its not typical chinese.

Theres one near where youll be staying

Youll also be staying near Katz's

I used to never like the noodles at Xians, because I'd get it to go and eating it at home lukewarm is not the move. I started eating it in the shop, and now apreciate the taste much more.

I go to the the one uptown on 102nd and Broadway, it also happens to be next to my favorite place in the entire city for a slice, Sal & Carmines - https://www.yelp.com/biz/sal-and-carmines-pizza-new-york

At least send them to Juliana's.

Soul Food in NYC aint really about franks anymore. I'd say just go to Sweet Chick for some chicken and waffles. Especially since you are in the LES already. http://sweetchick.com/

I just wanted em to go to Dumbo; its literally the best sight of the NY skyline you can get and I feel neglected by tourists (except photographers, shit is one big photoshoot in the summer)

Too many other options, like the fish spot Teef mentions below, Fishers of men, I think is the name.
But up and down Fredrick Douglas Blvd (8th Av), especially between 111th and 125th, has become a very decent food strip.

>- Food spots
Something you likely won't be able to get anywhere else anytime soon, the vegan yet authentically meaty tasting Impossible Burger, only at Momofuku's Nishi, in Chelsea - www.nishi.momofuku.com

>- Best soul food spots
Still my favorite regular soul food reastaurant Uptown - www.amyruths.com

>- What to see in Harlem
This free walking tour - www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/walking-tours/harlem/self-guided-harlem-walking-tour/
& the Apollo has different events almost everyday - www.apollotheater.org/calendar/

>- Performance venues - so far the Nuyorican poets cafe looks
>good
I'd go to a Comedy Club, there are tons of venues, the Comedy Cellar is one of them, you can make reservations -www.comedycellar.com/reservation if the wait is ridiculous, there are numerous others in the neighborhood.

>- Any extra things for a young couple that the guides wouldn't
>mention
Go to a free live taping of a TV show, like her's - http://www.theblacklistnyc.com/ffshow.htm

>- Food spots
Food will vary. Yelp is usually pretty helpful here. If you're in the LES and like indian/vegetarian food, hit up Punjabi Deli on 1st Street and 1st Avenue. it's a hole in the wall takeout but really inexpensive and tasty

>- Best soul food spots
we've lost so many . there's a fish fry spot in the 130s in Harlem whose name escapes me. that's one option. people still fool w/ pink tea cup which is now in ft. greene but that place isn't as great as it used to be.

>- What to see in Harlem (most british guides have neglected
>here)
studio museum, maysles center if you link film

>- Performance venues - so far the Nuyorican poets cafe looks
>good
depends. tonight if you're around Littlefield in BK hosts comedian Wyatt Cenac and his weekly comedy show. its $8 and so worth it

>- Any extra things for a young couple that the guides wouldn't
>mention
if you're intersted in black art, there's a great Carrie Mae Weems exhibit in Chelsea (Jack Shainman gallery). Thursday and Friday evenings are good for gallery hopping. you may catch an opening and get some free wine.

the Met Bruer is also hosting a Kerry James Marshall exhibit which i hear is excellent

party wise, wednesday at le bain at the standard is a good move if you like house music. thursdays kind of vary. friday, louie and chan in the LES has a solid weekly with a good rotating lineup of DJs

>Extra note, i'm staying in the Lower East Side but happy to
>travel around

good place to be as a tourist. don't be a punk. come to brooklyn. you can get some faux soul food in Bed Stuy at Peaches or Peaches Hot House (if you like Fried Chicken) and you can go to Bed Vyne Brew, which is a nice local spot w/ DJs every night

oddly enough, if you're around on Saturday, Louie and Chan does a monthly UK party with Khalil from Livin Proof. It's one of my favorite parties - all UK tunes and guest DJs.

fantastic date spot. Cozy little place with an excellent cocktail list, and it's stumbling distance from where you're staying.

If you're interested in beer, I'd recommend any of the Wiley brothers-owned bars in Brooklyn - Bar Great Harry, Mission Dolores, Owl Farm or Glorietta Baldy.

If you want to lose your face, I'd recommend Mehanata. It's a Bulgarian bar that has music, cheap drinks, and an "ice cage experience" where they put you in a subzero room with an insane amount of vodka and cups made of ice, and it's all you can drink for (I think) 2 minutes. Good times. http://mehanatanyc.com/

LES is littered with small indy art galleries; Here's a good sampling https://www.timeout.com/newyork/art/best-lower-east-side-galleries

You're also around a number of really great clubs for music. Pianos, Arlene's Grocery, Mercury Lounge, the Delancey and Bowery Electric all have pretty low-cover shows and interesting bands.

And Wylie Dufresne is currently cooking at NoMad bar, if you want to follow one of the guys who is sorely missed down there: http://www.grubstreet.com/2016/11/wylie-dufresne-cooking-at-nycs-nomad-bar-for-one-month.html

The Dutch is pretty great for dinner as well.

For soul food, I'd recommend Peaches in Bed-Stuy

If you are heading into Brooklyn, I cannot recommend Talde enough. Would also recommend checking out al di la, Convivium Osteria, or Frankie's 457. There's a really cool record and coffee shop near the last of those called Black Gold. http://blackgoldbrooklyn.com/

Also, fuck waiting in line at Grimaldi's. Go to a regular old slice joint; I'd recommend House of Pizza and Calzone over in Carroll Gardens/Columbia waterfront. If you have to have wood-fired, then go to Lucali in Carroll Gardens or Saraghina in Bed-Stuy. Or do the pizza tour- start at Spumoni Gardens and get their sicilian, then stop off at Di Fara in Midwood and work back to one of the places I mentioned earlier toward Manhattan.
