Other that that she rode the tea-party wave into the governorship. Much better than the Guiliani pick that has been floating around (I want that clown nowhere around the admin)

I guess this is what they call normalization lol. He throws some sane choices in there to balance out the crazy. And you're left thinking he's not doing that bad

Scoop: Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation
Jonathan Swan

President Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as UN Ambassador, according to two sources briefed on their conversation. The timing of her departure is still unclear, the president promised a "big announcement" with her at 10:30 a.m.

What we're hearing: Haley discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House, these sources said. Her news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration.

Background: Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, was easily confirmed four days after President Trump's inauguration in 2017.

She has overseen Trump's shift in dealing with the UN, including the U.S. exit from the UN Human Rights Council, which Haley called the organization's "greatest failure."

Worth noting: Haley wrote a public op-ed in September challenging the N.Y. Times' anonymous op-ed:

"I don’t agree with the president on everything. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it. I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person."

"Like my colleagues in the Cabinet and on the National Security Council, I have very open access to the president. He does not shut out his advisers, and he does not demand that everyone agree with him. I can talk to him most any time, and I frequently do."

"If I disagree with something and believe it is important enough to raise with the president, I do it. And he listens."

I just thought of this yesterday as well. Mueller's been mostly quiet. Could either be the worst thing, or the best thing. So I've got like 0.0000000000000002% renowned hope that the biggest pre-midterm bombs possible are yet to drop, and maybe the world isn't about to end afterall.

Mueller *probably* won't drop anything new before the midterms. He doesn't want to have an effect on the elections and have his credibility questioned one way or another. He's playing it safe and in it for the long haul.

Cause Dems are not taking back the House, and *definitely* not taking back the Senate.

So in that case, it's over.

Watchdog Group Calls For Probe Of Nikki Haley Flights Funded By Businessmen

The U.N. ambassador joins other Trump officials “reaping personal benefits” from their jobs, the head of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said.

By Mary Papenfuss
10/09/2018 08:30 am ET Updated 25 minutes ago

A watchdog organization is calling for an investigation into seven private flights taken by United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley that were paid for by South Carolina business executives.

The 2017 flights, which Haley listed on her public financial disclosure report this year, were between New York, Washington and three cities in her home state of South Carolina, where she was governor before joining the Trump administration. The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said the flights were likely worth about $24,000 and should be investigated by the State Department’s inspector general.

“By accepting gifts of luxury private flights, Ambassador Haley seems to be falling in line with other Trump administration officials who are reaping personal benefits from their public positions,” Noah Bookbinder, executive director of the group, said in a statement. “Our ethics laws are clearly written to prevent even the appearance of corruption and improper influence.”

At a “minimum,” Bookbinder said, Haley should have been sensitive to the appearance of accepting pricey gifts from businessmen — especially at a time when other Trump officials have been caught in scandals for lavish travel.

Haley argued in her disclosure that the flights, which she valued at $3,200, were exempt from ethics regulations because of her personal relationship with the businessmen who paid for the gifts. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington argued that Haley didn’t provide enough information supporting the claim.

Jimmy Gibbs, CEO of textile machine company Gibbs International Inc., paid for four of the flights. Others were paid for by Smyth McKissick, CEO of his family’s Alice Manufacturing, and Mikee Johnson, then-CEO of Cox Industries, his family’s wood business, according to Haley’s report.

Haley’s acceptance of the free flights failed to comply with “executive branch regulations restricting gifts from sources outside the government,” the watchdog group said. The regulations were enacted so that wealthy citizens can’t use expensive gifts to wrangle special treatment from government officials.

President Donald Trump’s former Health and Human Services head Tom Price resigned last year after spending $1 million in taxpayer money for pricey chartered jets and using military aircraft for government work.

Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, resigned this year amid an avalanche of scandals including accepting reduced rent on an apartment owned by a gas industry lobbyist and pricey travel and security paid for by taxpayers.

Brock Long, Trump’s head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, last month was ordered to repay the treasury for using government SUVs for personal travel, costing taxpayers $150,000.

Haley could not be immediately reached for comment.

UPDATE: 10:35 a.m. ― Haley resigned as United Nations ambassador the day after CREW called for an investigation.

Bill Kristol might be the only other contender for most demonstrably stupid person that liberals will listen to simply because he opposes Bush. Though David Frum and Max Boot are making a late push to be included in the tournament.

45 doesn't like to lose. I wonder if he sees the writing on the wall and sees that he may get knocked off in 2020.

So he says that he's only going to serve one term but he wants to be able to put someone in place to follow up behind him. And he throws all his weight behind Haley.

Maybe she's resigning from the UN to get her presidential campaign rolling?

Trump fires AG Sessions and replaces him with Lindsey Graham. Graham's South Carolina senate seat is up for re-election in 2020. Haley runs for Senate in South Carolina in 2020.

The Democrats are fumbling winning back the house, which was all but a sure thing just a few weeks ago.

Probably going to lose Senate seats.

What makes you think they can win in 2020?

CNN poll: Democrats are fired up and maintain a strong 2018 lead
By Grace Sparks, CNN

Updated 12:05 PM ET, Tue October 9, 2018

Washington (CNN)Four weeks out from Election Day, Democrats remain well ahead of Republicans in a generic ballot matchup, with 54% of likely voters saying they support the Democrat in their district and 41% backing a Republican, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

This is the widest margin of support for Democrats in a midterm cycle since 2006, when at this point, the party held a whopping 21-point lead over Republicans among likely voters. That's also when Democrats seized control of the House from Republicans, making Nancy Pelosi speaker until 2011.

Women more likely to lean Democratic than men
If the elections for Congress were being held today, which party's candidate would you vote for in your Congressional district?
Likely voters
Men
Women
The Democratic Party's candidate 54% 45% 63%
The Republican Party's candidate 41% 50% 33%
Source: CNN poll, October 4-7, 2018, 739 likely voters, margin of sampling error ±4.4%.

Graphic: Joyce Tseng, CNN

This year, Democrats' enthusiasm about their congressional vote has increased and 62% now say they're extremely or very enthusiastic to vote, up seven points since September among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents. Among Republicans and Republican leaning independents, enthusiasm has remained relatively steady, going from 50% in September to 52% in the most recent poll.

Democratic enthusiasm this year is more intense than it has been in previous midterm cycles, which typically engage voters less than presidential years. The 40% who call themselves "extremely enthusiastic" is the highest share to say so in a midterm election cycle since CNN first asked the question in 2009.

In fact, Democrats' enthusiasm today more closely resembles the 2008 presidential election. Just before President Barack Obama was elected, 45% of Democrats and Democratic-leaners said they were extremely enthusiastic about voting that November. In 2008, Democrats won eight seats in the Senate and 21 in the House, as well as a victory in the presidency.

Strong support for Democrats among women

Women's support for Democratic candidates remains extremely strong; 63% of women say they'll vote for the Democrat and only a third say they'll vote for the Republican. Men are more closely divided, but tilt in the opposite direction, with half backing the Republican and 45% behind the Democrat.

If women were to vote as the likely voter number suggests, it would be Democrats strongest performance in the House race in the history of modern exit polling (back to 1976). The previous record for women voting Democratic was in 1982, when Democrats got the nod of 58% of women voters.

Women are not significantly more enthusiastic to vote than men: 57% are extremely or very enthusiastic compared to 53% of men. This is, however, a shift from what we usually see in a midterm election year. In 2010 at this point, 46% of women voters were enthusiastic about voting in the midterm election vs. 54% of men. In 2014, a very low turnout year, 32% of men were enthusiastic compared to 28% of women.

Republicans are winning the expectations game

But for all the good signs in this poll for Democrats, they have not made gains in the expectations game. Half of Americans (50%) say they expect Republicans to remain in control of Congress after the elections, while just a third think Democrats will win control (34%), down from 40% who thought they'd take over Congress in an August survey.

On balance, more say the country would be better off if the Democrats take control of Congress (38%) than say it would be worse off (32%). But that gap has narrowed since September, when 40% thought the country would be better off under Democratic control and 28% said it would be worse off. About a quarter in both polls said it didn't make a difference.

Either way, Americans aren't much impressed by Congress as it is: Just 17% say they approve of the way Congress is handling its job, the worst rating (by one point) of Donald Trump's presidency.

When asked which party would handle important issues better, Democrats hold the edge on two of three critical campaign issues. Americans largely trust Democrats over Republicans on handling health care, 54% to 36%, and immigration, 49% to 42%. Republicans have the edge on the economy -- 48% favor them on that issue vs. 42% who prefer the Democrats.

Beyond the big three, Republicans have an advantage on national security (50% say Republicans would handle it better, compared to 39% who prefer Democrats). Democrats hold the advantage on handling issues of sexual misconduct (51% to 30%) and the investigation into Russian meddling in the US election (50% to 34%). On the federal budget and gun policy, Americans split between the two parties. On gun policy, that's a shift away from Democrats, who held a 48% to 40% advantage in a March CNN poll.

Both Democratic and Republican Party favorability ratings have stayed about the same since May. In the new poll, 46% have a positive view of the Democratic Party and 45% have a negative one. Republicans fare a little worse, with 40% holding a favorable view and 52% thinking of them unfavorably.

The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS October 4 through 7 among a random national sample of 1,009 adults reached on landlines or cellphones by a live interviewer. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

The sh!t I've read lately has said their lead has shrunk considerably, and I'm getting panic emails from Dems asking for money because Nate dog decreased their chances considerably.

I get that panic emails are a part of the fundraising game, but still.

Then add in that, from what I've read/seen, young people are not motivated to vote (lol jesus christ)

AND

add in that the demon base of the other side is motivated by how BART was treated

AND

how wrong the polls were in '16...

AND

how Dems have a knack for fumbling...

??

I don't know man. I'm not optimistic.

There was a lot of this type of "optimism" about defeating BART, about winning in '16, etc. It was dead wrong.

ALSO

Lets say the Dems do take back the house, I don't see how this is "writing on the wall" for Trumpolini.

I used to think he wouldn't run again, that he'd say "Ive accomplished more in 4 years than any president ever has" and shit...and save face.

But he loves those rallies too much.

*** My basic point is we have to stop expecting Trump and the GOP will lose because they SHOULD lose. If things that SHOULD happened did happen, he wouldn't have won the nomination.

Cause it's so appalling, so unnerving, so unconscionable that this is the world we're living in. So even if they're just empty words/sentiments, we need *something* that gives us even a glimmer of hope. No matter how unlikely it ultimately ends up being. No matter how many times we continue to lose endlessly.

It's so frustrating, and still so shocking. Especially after having had 8 years of relative calm, relative balance w/Obama. And especially after the trainwreck that was the Bush years ... I thought America would *never* intentionally put ourselves in this type of position again, after those pathetic 8 years. How quickly we forgot. Why do we seemingly *want* the mayhem and madness ? I don't get it.

the rnc already cleared the deck for him in 2020. refused to even discuss any primary debate schedule. there will be no challengers from within the party.

he consistently has near 90-percent approval among the party rank and file. repubs in congress are consolidating power around him and falling in line. and after november...regardless of what seats they win/lose...the repub coalition will be even more pro-trump.

if they need to purge the entire justice department and kill the mueller investigation...they will. and just live with the political consequences because they know the base will still come out and vote for him/them. and with the shitty job the media has been doing over the last 2 years (at least)...it will prolly be covered as a trump 'win'.

and theyre installing more and more pro-trump judges to further insulate him from legal penalty. and also to lock the opposition out of power electorally.

this is what is going on with authoritarian regimes all across the world right now.

this is what happened with the nazi party. hitler was some middling politician who was able to consolidate power among his faction by being anti- another faction.

trump isnt even conservative...as much as he is anti-liberal. and that unites the right.

the news keeps covering this entire period in our history like some damn reality tv show or snl skit. so people arent aware of the threat thats already upon us.

crazy part is that when bush had a sky high rating with the gop...he was also in the 70s and 80s across the whole electorate.

trump is in the 40s.

so the gop has effectively corded off their voters and kept them in tow independent of what the majority of the country thinks. thats some cult-like dictator shit.

Because telling each other "Mueller comin" etc isn't really doing any good. In fact, that false sense of calm probably encourages increased apathy.

(BTW I've always been a touch skeptical of Dems/the left suddenly thinking the FBI was going to be the hero. As much as Trump has publicly shit on the FBI, if something was going to happen, it already would have)

So Dems/the left (meaning voters AND reps) seemingly are waiting on something to come along and be normal...be it the FBI, Susan Collins (lol lol), the media, etc.

Assuming we accept at some point that we can't count on the FBI, we can't count on the media, we can't count on moderate Repubs (lol), etc...what do we do?

the only way to ensure the political outcomes you want is to win elections and control the levers of power.

a dem house/senate would have the power to hold investigations/hearings and subpoena witnesses and continue to peel away at his popularity (like clinton/benghazi/emails). a dem senate could put a lid on trump judges.

dem governors, state houses, and state superior courts can effectively control redistricting and put more house seats in play for dems. and dem secretaries of states or election board majorities control voting procedures/access to increase dem turnout and increase the chances of victory.

obama was president for 8 years with substantial mandates by the majority of american voters. that didnt stop repubs from killing much of his agenda in the states, dismantling much of his policies in the courts, putting the breaks on his judicial nominations, and relegating much of his success to reversible executive actions and agency rules.

we have to become more of a party that values power for the sake of power (because thats the *only* way to ultimately get the results we want). we cant continue to constantly do this song and dance where we have to get inspired to show up, get easily turned off by imperfect or boring options, ebb and flow from election to election, etc.

the gop figured this out a long time ago. dems are still running behind.

You've started working (or volunteering) with Dems, correct? Or do I have that wrong?

If so, do you get the sense that there is (or could be) some momentum on this stuff? Are there plans in place?

I'll be honest, I tried volunteering for the local Congressional candidate, and I ended up getting frustrated with the a)lack of a plan and b) lack of support from the party.

I know its one small example, but for instance- this particular campaign's plan was to canvass independents and REGISTERED REPUBLICANS.

I nearly threw my hands in the air.

I get canvassing independents, and I can even get the logic that there isn't enough resources to canvass registered Dems, but spending time talking to people who have actually taken the effort to register as R? I don't get it.

It seems to me that at some point, the Dem party at all levels needs to work more on registering new voters.

On this small example, lets even be charitable and assume they have a 10% conversion rate...so out of every 10 Rs they talk to,they actually win 1 vote.

I refuse to believe that you wouldn't get more success talking to people who aren't registered, registering them to vote, and locking them in to vote Dem. Maybe you can only talk to fewer people in that time, but I gotta believe your success rate would be higher.

To me, the Dems need to cast a wider net- and not to try and catch moderate Rs.

But to grab people who don't typically pay attention.

For instance, I get that young people SHOULD be more excited to vote. And I sincerely do get frustrated with their apathy, because its terrible times and I don't understand how they aren't more motivated.

BUT

The Dems should still be working on this. Do the Dems have a youth plan?

To sum up, it seems to me that Dems are counting on moderate Rs to vote for them...and to your point up above, the party is all in on Trump. I hope the party kicks this habit of trying to appeal to something that doesn't even really exist anymore...there is no such thing as a moderate who is temporarily okay with white supremacy, sexism, etc...if they were going to leave their party, they would have already done it.

This is why I think he has the early advantage in 2020.
People projected that the country would be in ruins early into a Trump presidency. But here we are almost 2 years later, and things aren't that much different than they were in 2016.
He hasn't really broken anything.

So people won't be hesitant to give him 4 more years.

He's broken a trillion things. But he's somehow given the *appearance* that nothing's broken, and that the things that *are* broken, needed to be broken ...... so yea. Same conclusion re: another 4 years, so we're kinda saying the same thing. Just want to make clear that plenty has been broken in his 2 years. And there's more comin.

38. "Why Nikki Haley’s resignation is no surprise (WaPo swipe & link)"

She hits some of the ideas that we touched on up there.

Count me among those least surprised that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is departing. I’ve repeatedly urged she do just that to preserve her reputation and political viability and to get out before the special counsel’s report lands. Aside from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, she is the only Cabinet-level official whose stature has arguably increased (or at least not decreased) during her time in the administration. She is the only one with a political future who can say that.

Haley was a forceful advocate at the United Nations, a staunch ally of Israel and, in an administration that pandered to dictators, a credible voice for human rights. The Post reports:

Though Haley advanced Trump’s policies, she occasionally made public statements at odds with the White House and the president she served.

In December, she said that women who had accused Trump of sexual misconduct “should be heard.” When a White House adviser said Haley had been confused in prematurely announcing more sanctions against Russia, she said simply, “With all due respect, I don’t get confused.”

The timing, however, is curious — but less so than one might imagine. She is giving the administration ample notice and not leaving until the end of the year. Perhaps her announcement was triggered over the administration’s tepid response to the disappearance and possible murder of Post Global Opinions contributor Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist and critic of the Saudi government. She might have had enough after the GOP’s nasty, misogynistic rhetoric expressed throughout the confirmation of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh. Or this just might have been the most convenient moment — after Kavanaugh was sworn in and far enough in advance of the midterms to not be too much of a distraction.

Haley is in a unique position among ex-Trump Cabinet officials. She’s uninvolved in the Russia probe (although we do not know if she was interviewed in connection with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s inquiry). Republicans have no cause for complaint, and yet she managed to let her criticism of incidents such as President Trump’s post-Charlottesville remarks be known. She has a bunch of options.

First, she has invaluable insight into the president’s mental condition and temperament. If she actually agrees with many sources in Bob Woodward’s book and the unnamed New York Times op-ed author that Trump is incapable of carrying out his duties, she has an obligation to relate those insights to Congress. Next January, if Democrats win the House, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), who would chair the House Judiciary Committee, may want to talk to her — as well as others who’ve left (Rex Tillerson, H.R. McMaster, Gary Cohn) to assess Trump’s fitness. (What we do about that beyond investigating is far from clear, but if Haley knows of a risk to the country, she is obligated to come forward.)

Second, she might simply bide her time, waiting for the Trump administration to collapse under the weight of multiple investigations. She will then be in a position to pick up the pieces, a unifying figure not objectionable to Trump cultists or to the flock of Republicans who when things go downhill will claim they opposed Trump all along. She will be untainted and arguably the most highly credentialed challenger to Trump still within the GOP fold in 2020.

Third, she might prepare to primary fellow South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey O. Graham, who is up for reelection in 2020. Because Graham has become the president’s vicious attack dog, he’ll look terrible in hindsight if Trump’s scandals catch up with him. His crazed rhetoric during the Kavanaugh hearings has made him a hero inside the GOP but a laughingstock outside it; depending on how Kavanaugh and Trump fare, Graham’s conduct not only with regard to Kavanaugh but also in slavishly defending Trump may be his undoing.

Fourth, if Trump’s grip on the GOP remains — and his attacks on the rule of law, facts, women and decency continue — she would be an entirely credible member either at the top of or in the No. 2 slot on a center-right independent ticket, especially if the Democrats choose a far-left candidate with limited appeal. Haley-Murkowski? Kasich-Haley, or Haley-Kasich? Haley-Heitkamp? There are oodles of options.
