Lin-Manuel Miranda’s High-School Bully Was Rapper Immortal Technique
By Tolly Wright

Sure, Alexander Hamilton had to stand up to the likes of Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson, but when Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda was in high school, his main adversary was the renowned political rapper and activist Immortal Technique. "He was our school bully," Miranda told Marc Maron on Monday's WTF podcast. "He terrorized kids, he threw them in the garbage. I got thrown in the garbage by him." Still, that didn't stop the young rapper, then known by his birth name, Felipe Andres Coronel, from coming onto Miranda's turf: the stage. "He got a part senior year and I was like, 'Oh my god, I'm in a fucking play with the dude that scares the shit out of all my friends," Miranda said.

Though Technique did not follow Miranda to Broadway, the Tony-winning star was still able to beam his proud papa face over the airwaves, saying, "He's one of the most political, ideological , he really made an incredible life for himself as a rapper." Adding, "He was a really angry kid and it's been wonderful to watch him grow up and find a political outlet for that anger." Is it just us, or is anyone else hoping that the two reunite for a musical about their real experiences as two kids from Harlem and Washington Heights attending a highly competitive gifted-and-talented school in the Upper East Side doing plays and being dunked in garbage cans? Hear the episode here; Immortal comes up around the 39-minutes mark.

I remember running around the NYC open mic circuit during my college breaks. My crew would always laugh at the angry offbeat rapper that wore the same green fatigues every show. Look at him now though, Tech has done some incredible things.

Back then, it's exactly how y'all describe. It was my first time knowing who he was and my impression was this dude just fucking hates people, super pissy asshole wanting to just fuck up everyone he comes across.

But we all grow and the dude I see in interviews these days comes across like someone I'd actually love to hang out with for a while and build.

I root for him now.

went to my HS. He was a senior and I was a junior.

Literally no one remembers dude.

Another kid who was definitely bullied graduated with him and ended up in that Pepsi commercial with Brook Shields in the desert. For 3 years he was the kid who had sex with his dog. An ugly rumor that was never confirmed. He was bullied a lot.

HS is funny tho.... so many cool kids peaked in HS while others were under the radar and went on to do great things.

It's why I try and tell kids HS isn't the end... it's the beginning. Don't let it ruin your future.

talks about who was "a loser" or "lame" in HS. It's damn near polar opposite for a lotta folks...especially depending on the HS. Some of the cool kids and fine girls are garbage now, all the way losing...and a lot of nerds are winning.

Hell, a top 3 Basketball player from my HS year who was supposed to be the next Alonzo Mourning or whatever randomly came to my BBQ this summer, and he was begging me to "put him on" because he raps now. He didn't even make it to playing in college due to his attitude and off the court issues.

When I meet people and am trying to figure them out, I try to imagine who they were in high school. My theory is who you are in high school informs what kind of person you are for the rest of your life.

Not to say that if you were a loser in high school you will be a loser for the rest of your life. Quite the contrary. But I do think that if you were the loser in HS and you become successful later in life, you still carry that experience with you and it shows up in interesting ways.

From what I know about Lin-Manuel, it makes perfect sense that he was buillied by the hip-hop heads in high school which kind of explains why he back doored his way into hip-hop through drama.

If Immortal Technique let him roll with them, he might just be another rapper from the Bronx.

It's some women who are super cute/fine now, but I see their high school pics and it's like whoa, that's nothing like what I expected.

But with guys, yeah you can tell sometimes, in good and bad ways, what they were in HS

In response to Reply # 20

How do you know if someone was a "loser" in HS?

I think the only time you can use this type of stuff is the first year of college.

Like you said earlier, college shapes people and I think that's where people really blossom.

It's hard to judge tho unless you went to HS with them. My first time seeing a bunch of white girls I went to HS with 10 years later was an eyeopener. White people age fast as shit.

I had a boss who was generally a terrible person. Had real issues with women too. He once told this story about how he and his friends from high school would get together and play dungeons and dragons in high school while the cool kids went to parties.

Learning that he was that guy in high school and now he was a successful business person totally explained to me why he treated people, specifically women, the way that he does. I "got him" all of sudden.

Miranda wasn't on some, "This mean bully used to pick on me and now he's just an underground rapper and I'M A STAR!!!! HAR-DE-HAR!!!! I WON!!!!!"

It was brought in the context of theater being able to unite people, especially in high school, as the two of them both ended up in a play together. Miranda is very respectful of Tech, talking about how he made "an incredible life for himself" as one of the foremost political rappers out right now, and how he's found a great outlet for the anger he had as a high schooler and channel it into something positive.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

It just sounds like something that was supposed to happen, especially comparing their styles of rapping.

I've never heard Miranda display any different flows but he probably would sound right on an Immortal track

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.
