"I've never stuck a tip in the jar at a coffeeshop."

Most times, I'm just getting a plain ol' drip coffee. Nothing crazy. A transaction that takes a full minute at MOST.

No drinks with three or more words in it. No cappuccinos w/ crazy artwork.

I've never tipped. Am I an asshole?

(Shouts to my login still working here, btw.)

FWIW, i drink an iced mocha once every two weeks max, so it's not like i'm in there everyday. don't know if that's better or worse - just putting it out there.

Also never tip when I pick up an order at a restaurant. The fuck I look like paying a tip when I drove here to get it?

I think the tip part is at the bottom because its always at the bottom of restaurant receipts.

It's this one Japanese place around my way tho, when I go there to pick my order up and its not quite done they always tell me to have a seat then bring an appetizer out to me while I wait. Nothing big, but that shit is so good I feel like I have to leave a dollar or two.

I get throwing extra money just because. It's these explanations that make no sense at all.

What are you paying for when you go to the food truck. Are you paying $8 for just the taco ingredients? No. You're paying the $8 for the taco ingredients and for the person in the truck to put it together for you.
Why does the fact that they are handling your food lead you to the conclusion that they should be tipped? That's what they SUPPOSED to do (c)

I worked in the food industry all through high school and college, and I've *never* seen anybody fuck with someone's food just because they didn't tip. you'd be a disgusting person to do that.

it's such a hollow warning. anyplace that would let that happen is probably dirty as hell to begin with.

These are people who handle your food... prepare your food so you don't have to cook it yourself... yes, you the consumer are paying $8 or whatever for your tacos, but all the profit from that sale goes to the owner/boss... the worker, who is the one handling your food, preparing your food depends on your tips... why would you tip a waiter or waitress, but not this person who just made your meal right in front of you...

Ive worked in a kitchen before, never seen anyone fuck with food...but I can tell you that people sure do appreciate it a whole lot when someone tips... helps their day out... I want people who work in a kitchen or a food truck all day to eat well, too... that was my point in saying take care of people who handle your food... take care of people who are taking care of you...

it's shitty when people don't tip... if you can't afford to or just don't want to tip, make your own food, coffee, cut your own hair, and drink your drink at home...

I tip a waitress because because she takes my order, brings my food, brings me a little cup of sauce on the side, brings more napkins, refills my drinks, etc. I don't tip the dude who cooked my steak. I used to work in a pizza place as a side-gig...drivers and waitresses got tips, I made pizzas and didn't expect to get tipped. The dude in the food truck making my tacos is usually the owner, anyway. I just feel like it's a way different dynamic. There's this BBQ spot I go to. I call in my order. Go in and pick up my order...which is already done...there's a tip jar on the counter. I look at it like Nick Young every time I see it. All the girl does is hand me my bag and swipe my debit card...come on.

The justification still doesn't make sense. The dude working at the supermarket isn't getting a cut of the profits, but I (you?) don't get the inclination to slide him a tip to boost his minimum wage.

It's just weird that we have designated certain occupations worthy of tips and others not. I empathize with the waiter thing. It makes sense to tip them since our dumb ass laws allow employers to pay them tiny wages (I would much rather not have to worry about what they are being paid).

But the Starbucks chick is getting at least minimum wage, the food truck dude is getting at least minimum wage. In that respect, I don't see how they are any different than the supermarket employee

The clients that get tips are the clients that he'll go the extra mile for in terms of fitting you in, or getting and appointment when he's already booked, or even bumping you ahead of other cats when you don't have an appointment. You also won't get the rushed, not as sharp haircut when he's running behind. And they may throw in extra stuff without charging for it like a straight razor shave or lineup or whatever.

But to your point - if you already have an established relationship with your barber and you are a regular, you'll get all this stuff without having to tip every time.

My main barber has been cutting my hair for like 15 years. I don't even know what his regular price is because I just give him a standard amount. I actually went ta couple years without tipping him at all because I didn't realize that the price went up when he changed shops. But it doesn't matter because that's my guy.

>I've known my main barber since hs.... another barber I go to
>church with/sing with... last one I normally tip, but I only

You tip people at coffee shops because they do make minimum wage (and usually in college), but unlike a lot of minimum wage jobs where they can ignore the customer, they have to interact with you and many other people who show up to buy coffee at 5:30am...usually unhappy and bitchy customers because they "haven't had their coffee yet" (I used to date a woman who worked at a coffee shop)... They provide multiple services...

Tip bartenders, baristas, waiters/waitresses, barbers and all other people that provide multiple services... since bartending, I tend to tip anyone with a tip jar out...

I'm also glad that I have money to tip... I'm under the belief that if you have money to go out to eat, coffee, nails, and basically anything else that it would be cheaper to do it yourself, you should have a little extra to tip...

Trust me, I do demand livable wages... Not going to stop tipping, though... Don't pretend I'm part of the problem because I tip... That's some real Fox News spin shit you going for...

And you're half right about me having an issue with capitalism... My issue is what capitalism does to some people... "Crumbs and pennies, I need all of mines..."

and most of the baristas are genuinely happy to pour you a cup of coffee. I figure if I have the income to pay $2 for drip, I can pay $3 to include a tip and support a local business.

but it's such a short transaction that if the person at the cashier is giving me retail "next!" service, I'm cool on leaving nothing.

but I'd be more inclined to go there (over other coffee shops). and if I'm a regular somewhere, and I know the people working there, yeah I'll leave extra.

in general I'm not asking to be fawned over, but I'm also not leaving a dollar if the cashier/barista is giving me completely apathetic service.

went to a new coffee spot yesterday and guy working up front gave me that annoyed stare without a greeting when it was my turn to order -- like I was inconveniencing his day (it wasn't busy). so nah in that instance.

my default is to always throw change (coins) in the tip jar at the coffee shop, and to tip an extra $1 or $2 if I'm picking up takeout food

when i was a barista in a past life, i remember only caring about regulars who didn't tip. they got an unspoken "cmon man." randoms i had no expectation about it. but either way it wasn't, and isn't, that serious

I worked at a local deli in high school, and there'd be regulars who would chat up the owner, know all the kids working there, ask for extra everything (special orders *their way*, which is fine)...then leave a big-ass line through the gratuity blank on the credit card receipt. making a point about it, lol.

we treated them well all the same, but it was a eye-roller among us.

are you doing more service, little extra stuff for the guys who come in on the regular bringing business consistently to you?

You should be doing something more to get the new customers so they can keep coming back.

Expecting a regular to spend all that money and more is ridiculous.

Don't demand financial assistance cause you had/have a shitty coffee job. I'll def tip if theres regular banter/familiarity within the service where I can benefit from some extra service in days where you throw me a free cookie, give me more than I asked for etc...

Tipping or expecting more money just because you have a certain job is ridiculous. Cause thats the general attitude people have who are mad when they dont get tips.

If you are in the service industry, albeit, coffee shop, Bartender, Waiter, Barber, fucking AAA road side assistance, I am throwing you a tip....

There was always this underlying rule while bartending, the shittier and shorter you were with the customer, the more they tipped. A strange phenomenon indeed.
