in the original thread, but if the linked song is as derivative sounding as indicated by all the responses, I wonder how Bruno Mars turns a profit on it if it's going to get tagged with a ton of credits.

Something about this dude is just way off.

Seems like he hangs around cool people with a notepad and then throws in as many cliches as possible into his songs.

And yes...I know it's childish to use the 'cool people' description but I don't know how else to explain it.

It's like his songs a technically very good and have a great vibe yet I still fucking hate them because he just doesn't have an ounce of authenticity in him.

Lol

If someone posted some that LA Funk from the 80's, y'all (you included) would fall over yourselves clowning it. This type of appropriation, no matter how slick the aesthetics, is LAZY.

I can be a fan of Zapp and Roger and still dig this.

But I am trying to figure out the appropriation angle. Who is stealing what from whom? Spell it out.

and even digging deeper into funk, ain't that for the win?

It just seems curmudgeonly to think young folks are doing wrong to get introduced to Funk by Bruno Mars and instead they should be listening to 30 year old records.

Not coming at you personally, just sayin.

ALL of Bruno's hits have been derivative. And he does this undeniably well. I'd contend that it's his ability to combine multiple references in the same song successfully. But anyways....I dig it. Just doesn't get me all the amped.

There's lots of acts that are kinda defined by being 'successfully derivative'. Stone Temple pilots......Coldplay.....Maxwell.....Lenny Kravitz.....All acts that are seriously deficient in terms of actual artistry or their contribution to pop culture, but generally pleasant enough to listen to. Except Coldplay. Coldplay is music for bedwetters.

man everyone is derivative, we are just more aware of it for these artists because we grew up with the same influences. the main difference is how good an artist is and how much if him/herself is able to come through in the art.

Seems to get great response for it to be completely brand new...like as soon as the beat drops, folks start vibing, especially in that mixed crowd or Family Reunion/Wedding setting.

Derivative or not, I see it this way. Most of the shit I play is derivative of allll the other overtypical usual shit that's "hot...." and I enjoy 80's Funk/Boogie/Jheri Curl music WAY MORE than most Trap music. So I could care less how much influence the song took from that era...hell, I wish that era could make a full return. Not because I'm stuck in the past, but because that type of energy and vibe has much more staying power, and a wider appeal.

I feel you on that 80's sound. Maybe it's because it was my wonder years but 80's funk, pop, rock, synth was dope as shit. Tons of classics from that era.

Playing during timeouts, before the game to pump em up, after, halftime, etc etc. Even before certain plays...like he'll play a snippet of "Hail Mary" before every third down when the opposite team has the ball.

And yeah, I love the 80's sound, way way more than the modern shit.

and if the album is all grooves than he looks like a genius for this. i mean he got cuts period.

folks want something to dance and get loose to period.

the cat is versatile already however dropping throwback grooves is on point period.

the cat is versatile and already got a strong track record as a songwriter for others, and his own career.
he got a vibe with him unlike so few others especially today.

in this thread alone he is a polarizing
and that tells me that he is on his way big time.

not many acts you say got folks on both side of the fence.

strong live performer, he got the goods and that says alot for this day in time.

who else can go away for a few years and drop heat?

Beyonce can't be away 4 months let alone a few years.

why is this the first thing people mention?

i don't get people these days.

first question should be: is this good (or at least interesting)? now, that's always a matter of opinion.

but you're not the first person in here going: how is this gonna make money - or - he's gonna have so many sample clearances (which is basically the same point).

finally, Bruno Mars has probably made MORE money than he needs in his life if he doesn't live like an utter heathen, so.....

this one on the record is so stripped down and unfinished sounding, even when you just compare it to the other songs on the album.

In response to Reply # 0

I've got no problem with revival records and sounds. I don't recall anyone being mad with Rafael Saadiq's last few albums in a motown vein.

But it seems like acts like Tuxedo and Mayer Hawthorne identified this lane a while ago and Bruno Mars saw or was sold on the potential and got with Mark Ronson and jumped on it as well.

I listened to Bruno Mars album this weekend and it was okay but I was slightly let down and it made me want to throw on the Tuxedo Album.

Part of me was listening to Tuxedo thinking if they gave those tracks to Bruno many would be huge records.

Uptown Funk, 24K, and Chunky def sound like Tuxedo. Hell, so does some of Snoop and Pharrell's album. And I would say that "Calling all my lovelines" sounds more like Mayer Hawthorne on his own than what Tuxedo made.

But the rest of the album is much different from that lane, even though they were probably inspired by Tuxedo. Tuxedo's album is all in that one lane of songs, and doesn't venture out as far as Bruno's does.
