The fact Peele's in an interracial relationship with a fairly visible comedienne should make for some interesting press junkets. I wonder if the comedienne will respond to any possible questions or crack jokes on twitter.

I think I'll watch this to show support since this is a pretty creative concept. Would be interesting if Peele is better creatively with dramatic works than his comedic efforts since the Key and Peele stuff isn't always that funny and/or interesting to me.

i mean any brother dating a white girl and meeting her parents for the first time is going to wonder if they know about him being black and be apprehensive. i have a feeling as the movie goes on it's going to be much less about race than we think. pretty smart of Peele to make you think race in the trailer though since it will get people talking.

his apprehension about meeting her parents and the whole white black thing is tension that would exist even if it wasn't a horror movie. his in-laws aren't scary because they are white racists (they very well may be though), their just crazy. it looks like they're mind controlling the whole town, not just black folks. I think the race thing is just going to be what draws you in.

No lie. Jordan Peele did his thing with this movie. It's a straight up horror flick with the right amount of humor, frights and genuine "WTF?". Lil Rey Howrey stole the film and Daniel Kaluuya was great. If you're into horror movies with a dash of social commentary, this flick is for you.

it was really creative, well executed, more bizarre than scary to me, great racial commentary, but what makes it a masterpiece?

mind you I know next to nothing about film or how to evaluate it the way I do music. I just leave a film saying why I personally (didnt) like it. I didnt hate Batman vs. Superman because I didnt know what I should have been looking to like

Then how can you say it's hyperbole to call
Get Out a masterpiece? You're pretty much
admitting here that you can't tell if it
is or not.

>I just leave a film saying why I
>personally (didnt) like it.

But here's the thing...
You do the same with music, because you're a
human being with biases like the rest of us...
You just color it with the European idea of
universal objectivity.
The fact that you're questioning another
person's subjective view, suggests that you're
bothered by another person's feelings...
and yes, the fact that I said something, suggests
that I'm bothered when ppl are bothered by
subjective views *whew*
What is your true concern? Do you sense dishonesty
in the determination that the movie is a masterpiece?
Why would someone be lying about their feelings on
this? etc

Ftr tho, the levels and metaphors in the movie
alone make it a masterpiece imo. There are
other things, but this is my subjective view,
so convincing you isn't my concern.

no true concern. I think people get caught up in moments and big ideas ("x number of critics said it's a masterpiece so it has to be")

Ahhh, so now we get to your true issue.
Too many critics like it, so anyone not
making a "formal" critique can't honestly
be thinking for themselves when they agree.

Prob won't beat the Lego movie or even a limping 50 shades of grey but horror movies rarely do...they make their money by being cheap to make compared to how popular they are. Even if it comes in 5th place in the weekend it would probably be enough to make sure it ultimately makes a profit.

movie. Concept is original and the movie is a lot of fun. Acting is top notch. Definitely a stepping stone for other Black movies in this particular genre.

I was skeptical after 'Keanu' but these boards kinda convinced me. The last time these boards motivated me to catch a flick was 'Dope' and I loved it. Glad I took a chance again. Wife and I loved it. Still can't stop talking about it now.

Thoroughly enjoyable and definitely unpredictable. Genius execution. They thought outside the box for this one.

Get Out is just The Skelton Key in reverse and without the voodoo?

and wtf was the deal with Rose flashing that creepy grin while being strangled? was that also a bit of racial comentary/ symbolism?

All in all the movie was a solid effort, although I do think there should've been way more gore when Chris starting picking them off one by one.

He was upset the movie had a 100% RT rating so he wrote a "rotten" review just to undermine the rating.

It's now at 99% with ONE rotten review out of a total of 143 reviews.

Bastard.

In response to Reply # 89

1. He published it late Thursday night/early Friday morning, before plenty of outlets posted their reviews, so he didn't do it just to troll a 100% rating. He'd have had no way of knowing that it'd still be at 100% by the time the Friday reviews all rolled in.

2. I firmly believe Armond doesn't do these things to troll-- he does them because he genuinely believes this loopy shit. He's a man of very sincere conviction, a hardcore Republican gay black man whose fights come from a very real place. He's a nutball, but he's not just hunting for clicks. Now, Rex Reed on the other hand? I believe Rex is in it for the clicks. He's a huge attention whore. Armond has been off Rotten Tomatoes for a couple of years, if memory serves (no clue why they let him back on), but he keeps writing the same way he always has.

It's actually possible that Rotten Tomatoes saw that Get Out had a 100% and coincidentally re-added Armond to the fold just to generate some buzz around him fucking up the 100%. But that's me being a generally anti-Rotten Tomatoes conspiracy theorist tho.

my fav is when he goes balls out on what's considered univerally bad/mediocre films and heaps them with praise. Take the first line in his Bats vs Supes review for instance:

"Fanboys do not own the franchises of Batman and Superman movies, so director Zack Snyder went against the mob and dared to raise the genre to a level of adult sophistication in 2013’s Man of Steel, the most emotionally powerful superhero movie ever made..." LOL

Never heard of this guy but I just passed a couple night-shift hours by reading up on him. Now I know where Milo got like 50% of his shtick from. He's definitely 'lite-right'.....a term I hesitate to use because it was created by Richard Spencer...but we need SOMETHING to describe this new emerging set of idealogical beliefs. And unlike the alt-right....this idealogy IS new. Until someone comes up with something better....lite-right it is. He's definitely not alt-right because like Milo...he's a critic of identity politics. Also...I'm not sure it's logically possible for any non-white person to be truly alt-right. I'd suggest that if anyone thinks it IS possible....they might have been mislead by how the media has portrayed alt-right beliefs.

There's no doubt he's a contrarian or, the term I prefer, reactionary. But I think in order to be a provocateur, one HAS to be reactionary. In anycase, he seems more intent on branding himself than on genuine, intellectual thought. That's not to say he's not intellectual...he certainly is. But he's a provocateur....and I'm not sure it's even possible to be a provocateur while also being intellectually honest. I'd contend that would be a contradiction in terms. Carving out his own unique, oppositional stance on modernity is more important to him than his actual analysis of modernity.

I have to admit though....he is an incredibly skilled and talented writer. I mean....his writing is scorching hot fire. I disagree, and at some times, LOATHE what he's saying but it's pretty hard not to give it up for HOW he says it. And his analysis of Prince and Morrissey (both of whom he is fixated upon) is pretty fascinating to me. Again, I'm not co-signing his views (a disclaimer that needs to be made nowadays because people don't think one should read or listen to someone they don't agree with)...but I'll be reading his stuff henceforth.

It's pretty fascinating to have the benefit of hindsight here. And what seemed like crazy statements from Armand during that time don't seem to crazy now. Especially his opening question...you can sense the other guys rolling their eyes but he was right. Hip hop became the largest youth culture market in the history of civilization. Any argument as to the timing of hip hop's taking over pop music with the explosion of global market access still leaves the question....well then why hip hop and not something else? I agree with almost 100% of what Armand says in that clip.

I'm assuming he had a shift in idealogy at some point in his career because his tone is considerably different in 1997 than it seems to be now. Anyone able to provide a brief career arc for him? Wiki searches aren't showing much. I get the sense that he underwent a sort of regression (from my perspective of course) in worldview at some point.

Armand White has been on this long before Richard Spencer dreamed up Alt-Right.

What he reminds me of is my dad and all his old friends who are and were so radically left that it ends up coming almost full circle and sounding conservative in this day and age.

The best example is how critical they are of Obama.

I get your point. But I don't like your framing it as something spring out of a white intellectual/anti-intellectual movement. This is rooted in a black POV.

I was clearly trying to define him by terms relevant to post-Trump world....not the world he developed his identity in. I know old black people too. And it was me that contended anti-intellectualism was a bigger factor in the minority vote than people here thought. I was called racist for it.

I think we can both agree that the anti-intellectual archetype that White sought out for himself was somewhat prophetic of the direction that America has drilled down towards post-Trump.

In response to Reply # 89

Its slug’s-pace opening (using an inept subjective point-of-view angle) replays the Trayvon Martin incident: A lone black male on a cellphone walks through an unfamiliar suburban community when he’s attacked. The movie never shows us that character again, but the implication is enough to set off obsessive social fears.

The fact this dude didn't even realize Darius was the kidnapped guy let's me know he is a POS troll. Why the fuck is he yapping about Trayvon and Obama?

*spoilers i guess***

the sister - the sneaky lefty liberal "thought u had a friend", ally as long as I can use you racism

the blind auction winner - the only one at the party who is actually "colorblind", ie doesnt see race, talks to chris like a normal guy and acknowledges how crazy all the guests and the whole party/event is. but in the end he still wants his body/his eyes, and will nonchalantly take it from chris with no 2nd thoughts

asian dude at the party- model minority, wants a description of if the 'black experience' is net good or net bad, ie would he be trading up or trading down

rest of the ppl at the party - also sizing him up for the auction, ie does he play golf, good in bed, his background

then the commentary on-
white women never being the suspect/always able to play innocent,
black men never being the victim,
black ppl going missing and nobody caring,
wypipo fascination and desire to control blk bodies,
blk folks putting on an act/fake smiles to live/survive in white spaces,
not being able to trust/rely on the cops ie the suspense when the cruiser pulls up (apparently there is another version of the script where the cop from the beginning is the one who steps out the squad car, and.... chris gets arrested. that would have been superwack).

and for the heavy metaphors-
"why black people?" - *kanye shrug*, basically asking why are yall racist in the 1st place, why does racism even exist, for 400 years running? *kanye shrug*
chris having no family/blk ppl being collectively "orphaned/isolated"

He about to get arrested anyway. You don't just murder a whole white family, pillar of their community, and get to drive into the night laughing with your funny buddy. Mad witnesses, who ALL know his name and his work. BLACK witnesses too, so this ain't no racial thing. Cop at the start is a witness. Cell phone records. then trayvon, mike brown, etc happened

and then after the trump win/rise he didnt want to depress the audience (further)

im paraphrasing but something along those lines

- There's tons of evidence that his story is true ( Both bodies on the road have stitch marks from the brain surgery) AND, even if the house burns down, there's a body in the medical facility with his skull cut open. Not to mention the DNA of the bodies in front of the house would match that of the missing people.

-He sent photographic evidence of the missing guy ( Logan ). That ALSO backs up his story.

-Nobody at the party would rat him out, because THEY were in on it too ( Not to mention the Logan dude is still with the older lady, which puts HER on the hook for kidnapping, right?)

-I don't think a court in the world would convict him of ANYTHING.

That part was unrealistic. No way you see all that evidence and ask for anything.

The tension and confusion was building up to that point. When you seen the photos, the door is still open to the possibility that mom has her hypnotized too.

As the family started getting crazier, she was convincingly acting like she was scared and panicked.

It wasn't until the reveal where all benefit of the doubt disappeared. Even the audience in my theater let out a big gasp at that part

Trusting her after seeing ALL of those pictures?
Why would he think she was hypnotized? He didn't
know the family was an experiment until he was locked
up downstairs. At best she'd told him a gargantuan
lie about him being her first Black guy and acted
like she didn't know the maid and the gardener dude.
If that ain't enough, okp dudes are more gone off

The racial nuance started immediately
when they got to the house. Dad was
tryna be cutesy with his racism while
mom was giving him the side-eye like
"too blatant, keep it more refined"...
same way white liberals look at Richard Spencer...
or how Spencer would look at some guy
yelling "nigger" on the corner.
Then dad said "the privilege of exploring someone
else's culture" during the tour (and a bunch of
other blatant and suggestive racial BS).
I kinda think everything else was pretty
straight-forward, but I loved how it dealt
with "polite" white supremacy... extremely
symbolic. The only difference in real life
is that it destroys you slowly. You eventually
become that Black person in the "sunken place"
who's acting in the interest of white supremacy,
and you don't even realize it. If you're a Black
person around hella white people, and your spirit
doesn't feel like Chris looked at the end of the
movie from fighting your way out of that hostile
environment and resisting the colonization of your
mind, there's a 99% chance you're in the sunken place.
Hell if you don't approach all white people as if
you expect them to practice racism/white supremacy
is some form, you already effed up in this system.

it wasn't about leaving her behind, it was more about the way his mom died in a hit n run. He was still carrying the guilt of it. So he couldn't just bearto leave her there on the road.

That's why say maybe he thought there was hope

The deal with his mother was a huge part of the
movie, so I didn't figure it needed mentioning.
They even showed a flashback to his childhood
when Georgina was laying there.

that a racist/white supremacist white person
wouldn't be having sex with them LOL.
Yall gon' learn today. Engaging in sexual
relationships is one of the main (and most
damaging) engagements with them. They will
look you in the eye, tell you they love you,
suck your dick, eat your pussy, hug you when
you're sad, and STILL get up and view you as
prey on the low. Hell that's been going on
since slavery... they love owning you.
How much easier is it to be your "friend" and
still view you as prey or inferior?
Are you a pet n*gger? Would you realize it if
you were?

You are a simple minded fool if you think this movie is advocating against inter-racial relationships. And you should think of whatever niece or nephew you undoubtedly have and are also undoubtedly bastardizing with this language. Stop it.

I'm sick of the progressive world that thinks what you just said is cool. It's not. I'm not a twitter activist. That shit don't fly with me. You should be ashamed to say something like that.

You, as a white person, are someone who I suspect of
practicing some form of racism if you think
there's anything incorrect about anything I
said in that reply.

>And you should
>think of whatever niece or nephew you undoubtedly have and are

You can shove your demands up your rear end, Denny.

>I'm sick of the progressive world that thinks what you just

If you were the alleged anti-racist you claim to be,
it wouldn't bother you at all.

>I'm not a twitter activist. That

Yours don't fly with ME, Denny. I see through
your racism masquerading as progressiveness,
and I'm never ashamed to speak on it.

I JUST said in reply 128 that sexual
contact is one of the most potent ways of
practicing racism. I also said in a
recent post that an alleged anti-racist
white guy said that white people would
respond with violence if all non-white
people refused to have sec with them.

Mr."not a Twitter activist" loses his
couth in response. Any honest and intelligent
alleged anti-racist white person will tell
you it's perfectly smart and sensible for
all non-white people to be suspicious of
ALL white people. The most important aspects
of white supremacy in a system of white
supremacy is convincing non-white people
to let their guard down with white people.
But it doesn't end there. He brings up
children born from those sexual unions as
yet another reason you should fail to
protect yourself with FULLY JUSTIFIED
suspicion.
I'm telling yall. Even the "coolest" ones.
Yall will see in time if you don't see it already.

white people inevitably practice. Man if you don't

Much respect to you tho. You said you were in a

and it can have you messed up on a whole different
level. We legit need a support group for victims
of intimate white supremacy.

Can't say enough. So much to unpack. Riot's post 102 gives alot of great starting points for thought.

Just some random things:

The brother characterized Chris as 'a beast' and characterized the institution of chess as 'white'. So from the brother's perspective....even though Chris was 'a beast'....he was always '5 (five) moves behind'....there's more here to show but the brother definitely threatens Chris by implying white people are inherently superior in 'strategizing'. Like sports analysis. The white fundamentalist and the black 'naturally skilled'.

When Chris finally attempts to kill the brother.....his strength is not enough. He has to eventually outsmart the brother in the same way the brother claims he CAN'T when they first meet. '5 (five) Miss-iss-iss-ippi'.

Chris is dark-skinned (had to be) and there's several scenes in which the lighting is designed to showcase the darkness of his skin.

So much more to talk about.

Horror Motifs executed perfectly. 'Bait twist' hiding the 'real twist' so that a genuine reveal can happen. I think this screenplay and movie may be a landmark of the genre. Chris stabs the father with the deer horns because he's finally through with doubting himself. The deer symbolized his self-doubt and self-questioning. 'Is it me?' The PERFECT thing to stab the father to death with.

Donald Sutherland's Invasion of the bodysnatchers.....Dawn of the Dead.....Hostel Part Two.....Get Out. If you didn't like it....you don't like thinking at the movies.

Not to get all jargon-y, but ya - hypnosis literally being used as a vehicle, leveraging historical trauma/setbacks to subjugate black people.

Obvious enough I guess.. but reflecting on the movie a bit more I really think it might be one of the most powerful allegories. Particularly if you consider the myriad of 'triggers' the mother could unearth to hypnotize victims.. it's not unlike the various 'flavours' of policy and practice that have been implemented to subjugate Black people in America, throughout history.

For me, the most important scene in the movie
is when Chris says "That was hot" after she
checked the police officer for asking for Chris'
license. He was on cloud 9, thinking she was
the greatest white person since John Brown.
Of course we all notice that part, but ...
that mess right there? That KEEPS Black folks
hemmed up decade after decade, century after
century. When will we understand that alleged
anti-racists are part of the plan too? As a
matter of fact, they're the most dangerous of
the bunch, because they encourage you to let
your guard down. Any white person telling you
different is telling to run into a war zone
with no weapon or bulletproofing... setting you
up for the worst forms of abuse and mistreatment
in an attempt. They care more about being seen as
a good person than your safety.
Until the system of white supremacy is gone, ALLLLLLL
white people are suspect. Tim Wise, Peggy McIntosh,
Jessica Pettit, MC Serch, it.does.not.matter what
they do or say. Such an important point that I wish
all Black folks would get.

Also, Homeboy ain't spazz on that chick for getting slick with the cop? (THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU ROSE??? YOU TRYING OT GET A NIGGA LOCKED UP???) Bruh ain't run when the car creeped up on him? Bruh ain't run when he looked up and say a big black dude running straight at him? He still asking that broad for the keys after he saw the pics?

Plus no sense of humor. Most of the racial comments were so lightweight he could've easily flipped them into jokes, instead of being offended & shit.

Main character was like a simp dude on his second week of being black.

Like I was saying in 220, this happens very
often... especially with alleged anti-racists
like Tim Wise or an even better example for you,
Rachel Dolezal... I know you were asking what
was so bad about her the other day. Black folks
tend to completely lose their minds and drop
their guards over white people they view as
"down for the cause" even for the lip service or
the simplest of actions despite the persistence
of the system of white supremacy.

>Plus no sense of humor. I played college ball and get the
>"man, you must be a BEAST!" comments at least several times a
>week since I was like 12, from black and white folks. Ain't
>hurting my feelings, I am a beast.

There's a book called "The Negro, A Beast" published
in 1900 by Charles R Carroll. I know a white woman who
refers to her biracial daughter's natural hair as her "beast
hair." Little girl's daddy is in the sunken place like hell.
Might be a common phrase but it has a whole different
meaning when a racist uses it to refer to a Black person.

And I'm kinda wondering why you had to specify the
running guy was Black:

>Bruh ain't run when he looked up and say a big black
>dude running straight at him?

Are we dealing with internalized racism here?

Your reaction is interesting... particularly that you still didn't say
Why specifying his race was necessary
considering we would know who you were

Also Jordan Peele said that everybody's sunken place is going to appear different. Just noticed that Chris' sunken place was a television screen. His mom passed while he was watching tv. He felt helpless while he was watching tv.

For me it lived up to the hype. I saw it last night and I'm still thinking about it today.

So many parts reminded me of my first girlfriend in high school.

I need to see it again.

how his friend Rod was thought to be the crazy one,
but he was actually the most sensible person in the
movie. Chris was in the situation, so he was slower
to put the pieces together until it was almost too
late, while Rod "took what was presented to him" and
came up with the obvious hypnosis theory.

What I like most about that is Rod is a regular Black
dude, speaking like a regular Black person, not super
correct english or anything, but he's the smartest
person there despite him being comic relief. The
only way I could have liked him more is if he didn't
credit TSA with his own intelligence. I'd love for
more movies to depict us as the intelligent people
we are. Some of the most intelligent Black people
many of us know are the brothers and sisters who
don't "act white" so to speak, and we don't have
to be JUST comic relief all the time.

My new theory is that 'Get Out" isn't about getting out of an interracial relationship (clearly cause Jordan is married to homegirl). I think the whole thing is presented as a metaphor for getting out of the country. The music in the background and everything else clearly messages to "LEAVE" but I think it is leave Whitey, not Becky.

It would be interesting to know the micro or macrocosm
from which he drew his inspiration, because as you've
stated, I think it's safe to assume that his message
isn't to leave an interracial relationship, considering
that he's in one himself... unless this was some kind
of cry for help, lol. Regardless of what his inspiration
was, I think his message applies to all interaction
with white people in a global system of white supremacy,
especially intimate relationships. I mean, "Becky" IS
"whitey" lol.
