"Your biggest current waste of money?"

Mine : smoking

I guess the question is : do I really need it or does it make me (that much more) happy?

Though I don't consider it "wasting"....I eat out because I don't want to make food, and I like sneakers. But if I really needed to cut down on spending to save for something, those would be the areas I would look at.

Life's short though, I'm buying kicks and good food when I feel like it now.

smoking for instance, let's say you start smoking cheaper cigarettes, say 50 cent a pack cheaper. if you smoke one pack a day, that's almost 200 dollar a year that can be spent on something else.

the building I live in is old as shit and the internet isn't wired up for whatever gets thrown its way. I pay $75 for 50MB/s and only get 12-18MB/s, which is the speed they charge just $40 for. I bought a new modem/router just this past spring that can handle insane speeds so it's definitely just the connection from my apartment to my ISP. But I pay more money for the illusion that it's faster speeds, even though it isn't.

Probably 50 50...gonna take an alcohol hiatus for the month so I can try to get my money in order because throwning a couple of drinks on top of a meal basically doubles the price.(not gonna fool myself into thinking with the schedule I have im gonna have the time to consistently make a home cook meal)

Most times it's because I actually want to try a new restaurant or whatever, not because I'm just unprepared or lazy (that's a couple times per week though).

In response to Reply # 0

I feel like eating out is a pleasure and quality of life enhancer that certainly costs money - but I don't know if I'd call it a waste.

to me a 'waste' is something I'm spending money on but not getting any significant ROI on - like overpriced insurance, a bad decision on some luxury brand (be it clothes or car) that I don't necessarily get sustainable enjoyment out of.

I'll scoff at a 12 pack of good beer if it's not on sale for $12.99 but I have no problem spending $12 for 2 beers at a bar.

well, I do have a problem with it and try not to do it as much these days.

but when you're paying $5 for an IPA bottle at the bar with a $4 shot of whiskey on the side, and then you hit the store and see a 6 pack of that same bottle for $9 and a 750ml bottle of that whiskey for $19, you do a little math in your head and feel a bit silly you're waffling on whether or not you should buy that $19 bottle.

Even moreso when you spend almost all your meals out at a bar or restaurant and then you randomly go to the store and realize for the amount you spent on yourself for four days worth of meals you could have bought yourself a week and a half worth's of meals.

We'll spend $30 on drinks in one might but then I'm all "get the smaller bottle" at the liquor store to save $4 so we can go out again in 3 days and spend another $30 on 4 drinks.

for less.

Like, if you could spend $12-$16 a day from either cooking or buying food that's legit/healthy but not expensive...but you're spending $40 a day like I do on most days, due to it being at spots that cost a bit more, and because I'm never ever cooking...then yea, it's just excess.

is slim to none unles you live next to a banging cheap food spot

once you factor in variety and have an honest discussion about this its going to trend upwards of $30 when you factor in 2 meals a day.

getting to the point where you're just paying off a mortgage is a deeply uncomfortable exercise in budgeting.

Once you're there you're good but getting that downpayment together is hellish.

you may pay a little more in mortgage payments but its def possible to get a decent interest rate with 10% down.

its moreso about being honest about if you plan to stay for 10 years or move. If you arent moving for the next 10 years its pretty foolish to rent UNLESS you live in NYC or SF.

fuck those markets...

but a co-opt is also an option
