"activist Darren Seal found shot in burning car"
Fri Sep-09-16 11:00 AM by CyrenYoung

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-darren-seals-ferguson-activist-dead-20160907-story.html

When Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer two years ago, Darren Seals was one of the most vocal activists leading protests across the city. He rallied a boycott of Democratic candidates in local elections after he said they failed to protect black lives. And on the day a grand jury declined to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, Seals held Brown's mother in his arms as she sobbed.

On Tuesday, Seals was found dead, authorities said, in a burning car outside the city. He was 29.

Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department responded to a vehicle fire in the northern part of the county at about 1:50 a.m., reported The St. Louis American. When they arrived, authorities found Seals body inside the charred car. He had been shot, police told the newspaper.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide, reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but did not release any suspect information or a possible motive.

Online, friends and fellow activists mourned.

"We can live in a world where people don't die by violence. Nobody deserves to die," DeRay Mckesson, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist, tweeted Tuesday afternoon. "We did not always agree, but he should be alive today."

Johnetta "Netta" Elzie, another leader of the Ferguson protests who grew up in North County St. Louis, wrote a series of tweets expressing her grief and shock:

"Today is really hard. This is really really hard."

"I hope his soul is at rest. I truly don't know what else to say."

"Peace to Ferguson protesters."

"This is so hard. We've never done this part before together."

In his own Twitter bio, Seals described himself as a "Businessman, Revolutionary, Activist, Unapologetically BLACK, Afrikan in AmeriKKKa, Fighter, Leader."

He was best known for his local activism. A Washington Post story from 2014 featuring Seals described him as an "assembly-line worker and hip-hop musician."

In that story, Seals described his attempt to organize Democrats to unseat liberal officials by voting for white Republicans in the local elections that fall.

"Just because they've got the D next to their name, that don't mean nothing," Seals told The Post. "The world is watching us right now. It's time to send a message of our power."

At the time, Seals lived just blocks from where Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in 2014. Four months later, after the prosecutor announced Wilson would not face charges in Brown's death, Seals described to MTV what it was like to comfort the man's grieving mother.

"And for Mike Brown's mother to be right there in my arms crying - she literally cried in my arms - it was like I felt her soul crying," he said. "It's a different type of crying. I've seen people crying, but she was really hurt. And it hurt me. It hurt all of us."

Most recently, Seals had actively voiced his support of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who had made headlines in recent weeks for sitting and kneeling during the national anthem at NFL football games to raise awareness of racial inequality in the United States.

Tariq knew him personally and went into some
detail, on his latest podcast
about Darren's interactions with BLM, how he
smacked Deray Mckesson, and Brittany Ferrell
saying "we'll be glad when we can drag him
through the streets" before he turns up dead.
Now her Twitter page (@bdoulaoblongata) is
deleted after he's been killed.
This BLM shit is nothing but a part of the
new cointel pro, sent in to dissipate
constructive energy among Black folks.
I been said this tho.

I don't really understand. Who gets murdered without being targetted?

I feel like alot of activists are using that term publically to hedge. It seems like an insinuation that he was killed by police. But not enough of an insinuation that one can back off if it's revealed otherwise. Seems hard to believe that anyone involved with the police would feel threatened enough by him that they would be motivated to kill him. What threat did he pose to anyone that they'd risk killing him? Also, this is the third time he's been shot or 'targeted'.

If you can look past the homophobia....he seems like an activist who had pure intentions and was disillusioned by other activists who weren't as pure as him. But just because some of the BLM people were acting shady with gofundme accounts doesn't mean they were 'agents'. Activists who line their own pockets and borderline exploit the issues they're working on are a dime a dozen. Maybe I'm a skeptic...but that's moreso a norm than an exception. It doesn't mean they don't care about the issues and doesn't necessarily disregard everything they accomplish. Not everyone is pure. Couldn't help but think of Malcolm X learning more about this story. Not everyone is going to be completely altruistic and genuine in the activist world.

The more i read/listen....it's really the people around him that are making the really crazy accusations about cointel pro and such. For the most part...he was taking issue with some of the activists pocketing and abusing the money they were raising which was much more down-to-earth and tangible. Tariq Nasheed is so irresponsible and reckless. People get killed for the things he's randomly accusing them of with NO basis in fact. And the irritated Genie guy is a lunatic.

to me.

>I don't really understand.

You're white, so you don't have the same drive to
understand these things that I do. I understand
that you wanna be down for the cause, and I got
respect for that. Some of this stuff is just
not for you to understand tho.

>What threat did he pose to anyone that they'd risk killing him?
>Also, this is the third time he's been shot or 'targeted'.

He could truly galvanize the people to not fall for
the BS. America doesn't want that. It wants a circular
game that keeps us subjugated and oppressed. The proof
is in the fact that it's literally never stopped.
Only cognitive dissonance could lead you to mention
Malcolm while asking why an effective Black leader
would be targeted.

>If you can look past the homophobia....he seems like an

This is a large part of the naivety I was talking about.
We understand being set up on a whole different level.
You're speaking of this like a white man living in a
white world... which is understandable, but not realistic;
not for me anyway.

>The more i read/listen....it's really the people around him

Well you're right about Irritated Genie being a lunatic.
If anyone was reckless, it was Brittany Ferrell. She
was the one talking about "dragging him through the streets."
Tariq only put her on blast.

Like.....I can't deal. Trying not to think about it 'cause it will have me discouraged, paranoid, and latching on to any conspiracy theory out there. Like race war, BLM agents....alladat. Not now.

Just reinforces the Us vs. Them attitude that I am trying to fight, especially with all the craziness in the news.

Clicked on some links. Really sad to see all the division between different factions of the protests. And twitter ain't helping. There's so little SUBSTANCE to all of these beefs. 'You're a bedwench.....You are harassing me as a woman.....You're an agent....You're a coon....You work for white supremacists.....You're a homophobe.....'

It is ALL characterization without ANY analysis or real debate. And it's all happening between factions that would benefit from working together. As someone from the outside looking in....I can kinda see the points being made on all sides. BLM can seem really detached from street realities and some of their academic-oriented agendas seem frivolous to people living in poor communities. But the street activists referring to people as 'fucking faggots' repeatedly and then accusing people of being agents and this type of shit is also unproductive.

I was watching a doc on the history of the Greenpeace movement a few days ago and it's interesting to draw a parallel. Different factions spend such an enormous amount of energy fighting each other that the overall purpose and common goals start to get obscured. 'The fucking faggots busted the whole unity of the black movement up'. I mean...when you get to a point where you can't even see the contradiction in that statement I think it's pretty clear that you've been distracted from the original goal.

And I'd suggest alot of the divisions come down to people not being able to accept certain privileges they have. BLM activists that come from good communities have a hard time facing their class privileges and are uncomfortable in accepting. That Talib Kweli post had me kinda skimming over his tweets and reading a few articles....it's funny y'know. There are thousands of examples where he says some sort of variation of 'I recognize my straight privilege...why don't you recognize your white privilege?' But not ONCE does he go anywhere near accepting his class privilege growing up. On the other hand....street activists think that lgbt issues have NOTHING to do with ANYTHING....and it's easy to say that when you're straight.

There's a division between the academic side and the street/grassroots/local/whatever you wanna call it side of the movement. That does not bode well.

Amongst many other things:

1. They are being funded by 'white supremacists' (a vague identification itself) with the aims of sabotaging the pro-black movement by shifting the focus to lgbt rights

2. They worked with 'white supremacists' and police to set Seal up to get executed.

3. They want to kill the black race by colluding with white supremacists to introduce homosexuality to black communities with the aims of slowing down black birth rates.

Again....people get KILLED for shit like that. Insinuating and/or outright accusing specific, named blm activists of that type of shit could literally get them KILLED and is reckless as hell. Not to mention, unspeakably improbable. Deray and Brittany et al are googable. Are we really suggesting they spent their entire adult lives working on activist issues in some elaborate plan to someday sabotage the movement? When exactly were they recruited by these unidentified white supremacists.....When they were 14?

Self-interested? Sure. Borderline exploitive? Possibly. Disingenuous and Phony? ok. But that other shit? C'mon man. That's tinfoil hat nonsense.

Your post reminded me of this quote and your point is valid

It's easy to make those claims, but I really wish it was accompanied with proof

I'm also feeling bigreg's perspective

i.e. both sides of the debate have valid points

IMO, it's starting to feel like BLM have used up their utility

i.e. Putting national attention on the issues

and we're at the point where the work will continue in a spinoff that is more inclusive of everyone

Even if its for 'fashion' id rather have more bodies out there then everyone in their individual silos out doing it for 'real' reasons...but not as ineffective because the numbers are smaller.

I look at it like the million man march; there was problematic reasons across the board but the basic idea of black male togetherness is a universal one. If someone's going to use police brutality protests as a jumpoff for a book (My Years in #BLM, A Memoir!)they can do it, as long as they put the time in to march against police brutality

*of course there's cointelpro and infiltration. GUARANTEED NYPD is paying more then a few undercovers overtime to be #BLM activists...but its just not going to be as effective as it was in the past because of the nature of the beast. The power of being a decentralized organization..there may be chaos...but it's not as easy a take down. No matter what your opinion on Deray is; be it he gets shot martyr style tomorrow or publically comes out to work on Trumps campaign...he's an easily replaceable and the work continues on.

That's one of the definitions of "academic",
so that should explain the division.
That division will exist as long as the
academic people you're referring to are
educated by the very people who've oppressed
us for so long. They deal in mis-education
and pseudo scholarship... running around
attacking Black men, yellin about some
toxic masculinity as a code word for Black men.
Nobody needs that bullshit "academia."

To paraphrase Dick Gregory "it's a game." America is all a game until you step to far out of line,or f--k with their money. Then the game creates " questionable circumstances, accidental deaths, unbelievable suicides, unsolved mysteries, cold cases, and quick fast autopsy's that conclude natural causes.
