pretty sure it's more this than anything.

You know I cringed when my daughter watched whatever Pixar-update of Rapunzel that was. she would not.get.off.that.shit.

now, at 9yrs old, she has dreads to her shoulder.

He aint around no black men...he's mimicking his environment.

He might grow out that $hit, marry him a white gurl like Li'l Fame and beat her a$$ for our reparations, wearing a wife-beater with an ironed-on photo of him whippin her a$$.

He might BE the next LaVerne Cox.

I hope he's in a safe environment where's he's loved and cared for. I would like for that place to be amongst black folk. But who knows

In response to Reply # 0

Ok you think 5 yr old can make a solid
gender choice, but she's destroying good
self-concept and self-image letting him
pretend to be a white girl. That part
alone makes me think she forced all of it
on him. She's just buying pets in her mind.

In response to Reply # 35

Apart from making him look less like the cartoon character he's wanting to dress up as?

You know dressing up as a cartoon character doesn't actually mean you have to live as that character for your entire life, right? This was just for an afternoon out?

Are all the cosplaying teens painting themselves blue to look like Na'vi closeted misanthropes, deeply scarred by Hollywood in such a way that's left them wanting to go outside looking like aliens?

Sometimes kids are just being kids.

In response to Reply # 44

Children are bombarded with images of whiteness
as the default. Teachers, commercials, cartoons,
etc etc, you name it.

You sound naive.

Children don't live in an Alien Supremacist society,
so dressing up as an alien isn't going to impact them
the same way as dressing up as a white person.

Sure, he's "just being a kid", but what that means for
a Black child in a white world is totally different
from what it means for a white child.

In response to Reply # 89

and you keep thinking it's going to change.
It's different because America wants it to
be different. Integration wasn't done to
help us, because even Kenneth Clark's evidence
in the Brown V. Board of Education, that Black
children raised in Black schools had higher self-
esteem, was omitted from the evidence.
It was done to destroy our identity
as a people. It's working according to plan
because those like yourself continue to think
being around white people is an elevation from
being around Black people.

74. "How is it bad?"
In response to Reply # 52
Thu Aug-25-16 09:21 AM by TheAlbionist

Seriously? How would this affect the kids life in the slightest if the Internet hadn't decided to define him by it? As if no boy has ever played dress up before. No boy's ever snuck in his Mom's closet and tried on a bra without bringing society down around his ears?

How is it bad that a black kid is able to find inspiration in a white cartoon character?

Sounds like progress that it's not alien to him. Racists and homophobes in the 50s would've wanted it to be alien... a black boy pretending to be white... a boy pretending to be a girl... in 2016 it's just another opportunity to have fun he shares with white girls.

If ghouls on the Internet didn't decide to actively bully a schoolchild they know nothing about, it would be a non-issue.

it's not uncommon for kids that age at all. it doesn't necessarily mean the kid is trans - it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

if the boy wanted to wear a dress and blonde wig i applaud Charlize for giving him that space. my only 'problem' is that it was captured in a photo b/c ppl like you folks here are awful and the photo may 'haunt' him later in life. but maybe not? i dunno. anyway, y'all and the paparazzo are the problem, not Charlize or the boy.

fuck you.

I'm still waiting for an answer to my question about how long the statute is between when a post should be titled "*insert newsworthy story here*" and when it can be titled "WHAT, NO POST ABOUT *newsworthy story* ?!?!?!?!"

Is it a day ? A week ? An hour ? Does it vary depending on the kind of story ? Someone help. Asking for a frien.......a bunch of shitty internet posters.

I dont know the root of how a person is born wired to be LGBT, but life isnt about what I can wrap my mind around

these arent furries or people with weird fetishes that need examining (at least not as far as their sexual/gender identities are concerned)

as far as this creation called whiteness goes;
that's the pinnacle of it where status is concerned.
That being the source of their pride and very identity,
it only makes sense in American historical context that
this is a hobby for the richest of them.

Everyone.

Stop.

This is fatuous bullshit that you know nothing about and has ZERO impact on your life.

Leave that woman and her son to get on with their lives. For all you know, he refused to leave the house unless she let him dress however he likes - kids do shit like that and occasionally parents give in.

Or he might be transgender.

Either way.

WHO THE FUCK CARES

Frankly, your lives are fucking worthless if this is what you're spending them on.

There's no middle ground between, "You're a special special princess, and if you want to walk around wearing 40 pounds of costume jewelry and make-up even though you're only 6!" and "No, you'll dress in a plain, white, knee length dress and a bonnet until I marry you off"?

Yeah, let your kids express themselves, but damn yall pretend like parents have no right to try to direct their kid's lives.

Are yall out there taking care of these kids when they get made fun of at school? No? Then maybe everyone, on both sides, needs to STFU.

Parents do that. Parents shape their children's self-image. Plopping your kid in front of the tv and never distinguishing the difference between real and imaginary, constantly telling them they are fat or ugly or whatever else shapes their self-image

I never wanted to be a mermaid, Cinderella, belle, mulan, Aurora (sleeping beauty), etc. however I did want to sing like them...it was always an aspiration to become a Disney Singer...

I swear most of you judging parents aren't even parents and have no idea the concessions you have to make to keep your sanity!

even HE notices that this is an issue.

but media, in general, is full of white images for the most part, i don't think anyone can argue that. and that is reflected in children's programming as well.

what do you do with your children to avoid or minimize the amount of white images seen in programming? (i'm genuinely asking, no snark)

The internet is FULL of positive images of little brown children.

There are companies devoted to "browning up" books, toys, games etc. for our little brown children. If I get the chance I'm going to link up some stuff! Amazon has an abundance of books and things geared toward little brown people.

Right now, I applaud the Disney channel for having the most diverse cast of characters in their programming. K C. Undercover, Doc McStuffins---shows my little brown girl LOVES not because she can identify, but because they are good shows. However, *I* love them because she can finally see herself in the shows she watches.

She wants to be a vet or a spy!

I feel what you are saying Kilo, I do...but we have to be proactive about what our babies see!

talk about our own images in America?
because white is the default.
A white child can easily turn on a show or
a movie and see all white people, and it
reaffirms their existence. It has the
opposite affect on a Black child.

We can step in and help the situation, but
they still live in the real world.

Albionist is up there comparing a Black child
wearing a blond with in a white world to a
child wearing an alien outfit. Ppl really
don't get it.

I'm happy that people are being proactive, but
sometimes even that proactiveness is just a
matter of saying "look, you're there with white
people" instead of being able to show them they're
the default.

That's why they have to put on a costume to look like a cartoon character. Because cartoon characters are... cartoons.

Most white girls would wear a wig if they were pretending to be Ariel. The point is that hair doesn't mean shit unless you're a racist. If we're going to move on from racism EVER we eventually need to get to the point where all kids can do this without anyone side-eyeing.

http://www.lightinthebox.com/princess-mermaid-ariel-cosplay-wig_p1347008.html?currency=GBP&litb_from=paid_adwords_shopping&utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&adword_mt=&adword_ct=84187195634&adword_kw=&adword_pos=1o3&adword_pl=&adword_net=g&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=1810908567_301579154_21687113474_pla-104068895312&gclid=CjwKEAjwrvq9BRD5gLyrufTqg0YSJACcuF81LrVo5KZNbNDGyU2_6aCUX-lO8ckuJmYKox1_c4Y10RoC1Jvw_wcB

I'm not about to say that institutional racism has gone away or isn't extremely dangerous and damaging (it is and we all need to be careful ALL the time - and YES kids also need to see plenty of media centred around brown boys and girls), but this isn't that. Stripping children of their innocence and replacing it with vestigial racism is just as damaging. This kid doesn't need to be told he can't dress up as his favourite princess because she's got a different skin tone to him anymore than he needs to be told he can't be president or CEO of a Fortune 500. Let the kids dream because plenty of them will achieve the dreams and knock down ever more barriers. They'll be better than we were.

This "dream for the future" crap is naive

We are talking about a white supremacist
society where everyone is bombarded with
images of whiteness as the default.
This is NOT comparable to a white child
wearing a red wig.

That movie was Frozen, and she only saw PART of it because she didn't have the interest or attention span to watch the entire thing. That was about a year ago when she'd JUST turned 3. The ONLY reason she was even aware that the movie, characters, etc. existed was from her peers and teachers. She came home singing that damn song one day and I asked what she was singing. She said "Let it Go", "It's from Frozen". I asked her what frozen was and she began telling me about the characters and song. This was BEFORE she'd even seen or heard of the movie! I type all that to say; kids are exposed to the Disney shit from JUMP. It's everywhere. So yeah, exposure is the 1st step. And exposure is almost everywhere these days. The only shows on TV we allowed her to watch are pretty much Doc McStuffins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Olivia. She's since graduated to being obsessed with Paw Patrol. We DVR everything, so she doesn't see commercials.

>I never wanted to be a mermaid, Cinderella, belle, mulan,
>Aurora (sleeping beauty), etc. however I did want to sing
>like them...it was always an aspiration to become a Disney
>Singer...

I don't think you can limit the negative impact or guage it by whether or not a kid imagines themselves or wants to be one of those princesses or whatever. It's deeper than that. It's the constant exposure to the imagery and subliminal messages that they send by the sheer abundance of them. Princess..by default... = WHITE WHITE WHITE. So from jump, you tell your ethnic child "You're My princess" or some shit like that and eventually they are gonna pose the questions "But I don't LOOK like a princess".... and then THAT'S where the tricky drama comes in...and the uphill battle begins. It's the little things...that add up to a LOT. The hair, the skin color, the environment, the seeing their white friends dress up for halloween as these characters and look just like the picture on the box vs. when they buy the same costume and DON'T look like the picture on the box, etc. etc. etc.... kids know...they pick up on this stuff and it's VERY difficult and even futile to shield them from exposure to it....because they're KIDS and if they have peers, they WILL be exposed.

I taught 2-6 year olds for about a decade.
Disney COLONIZES your kids minds, early. It's hella common for what you described to happen.
I had parents whose kids literally NEVER watched TV unsupervised go insane over the influence of disney on their kids, solely dude to social interaction. The fact that that COMPANY's influence over kids is so ubiquitous is kind of nuts.

The stuff i've seen happen to the personalities of some of the strongest lil girls is just heartbreaking.

mostly girls.
i knew that going in, so I was EXTREMELY conscientious about what and who I had in my class.
Told the parents, there will be no Princess stuff, of any kind, in any events in my class, and explained why.
They were cool with it
First semester was bomb..kids were great, everybody got along.

One weekend, one of the WASPy kids had a bday party at their home. ALL DISNEY E'ERYTHANG

By Friday of that week, the lil white girls were on the playground mobbing up on the non-white ones telling them they can't be princesses cuz their hair "looks different and they don't look like princesses".

these were 3-4 year old children of affluent, educated, VERY liberal parents.

And similar shit has happened damn near every year

princess tiana gives parents an opportunity to help kids build a healthier self image and show them that skin color doesn't make a princess

i think with more options like princess tiana, doc mcstuffins, etc (*note...i don't have kids so my knowledge is limited) there is an avenue to begin to break that mindset

but with anything it is business...so parents are really be the driving force whether more of these positive images are created....because if parents don't buy the products....there won't be a market and without a market their won't be anymore products

just from casual observation even a brand as successful as Doc McStuffins is still having to fight for its place which is sad

and as a former teacher, I can't begin to convey to you the amount of sheer BS that comes about due to princess imagery in the minds of little girls.

Disney quite literally introduces millions of little girls to the concept of "beauty" - and all that goes along with it - every day.

And it affects them.

I mean, look at how much the *idea* of the Princess Tiara meant to grown-ass black women...clearly, the imagery matters, on a very real level.

why shouldn't kids be able to dress in costumes?

why should adults control the way they dress 24/7?

why are you putting your hang ups on clothes and what clothes mean on your child?

this is the exact best time to let kids wear the craziest most mismatched outfits that they want. why not? (this goes for hair experimentation too)

they have years of having to conform to a dress code imposed by others.

give them the freedom to express themselves through their clothes now while they can.

i really hate that we as a society put so much emphasis on clothes and give what someone wears so much freakin power....it's stupid....

for the record this is the best instagram account ever:
https://www.instagram.com/whenchildrendressthemselves/?hl=en

no way you can look at these pics and not smile....if not that says more about you than the kids and parents

i commend the parents that aren't hung up on the bs and let their kids be kids and not mini adults

No one is insane or has issues. That's not a costume and if it was there no way a little 5 yr old boy should be wearing a girls dress. Period. And yes it's a girls dress made for a girl to be worn by girls.

Next you'll be trying to tell people it's OK for 5 yr old boy to wear girls underwear if the like the colors.

You can keep that logic.

i'm being pretty straight forward about how i feel about your thoughts

and i don't know what you are talking about it ... it has already been established that the hat is Elsa from Frozen...so it's not far fetched that he could have been playing dress up as her...with whatever dress was available...or not....but to be clear...it doesn't matter to me whether it is a costume or not...i have no problem with him wearing it

and yes ... i would not care if my 5 year old son wanted to wear "girls" underwear ... cuz unlike you i'm not hung up on stuff that really doesn't matter...it only matters to the adults that created the labels

and I didn't get his point for posting that photo. Pretty sure at the time none of us knew that kid was adopted. Maybe it's in the link but I didn't see it.

now that he is dead and was abused... I don't get what truth's argument is or why he upped this post

For the record I'm not a fan of having Black boys dress up as white blondes but I fail to see how his abuse is a gotcha moment.

Not that I approve but why would he want an Afro wig?

To me it’s an issue because more than likely he is trying to look like Theron. This reminds me of This Is Us at the swimming pool. I know Charlize is rich but she needs to get some Black folk around that kid before he ends up bating his skin or his hair.
