"a GD Cylcling Post"

Yes...I know cycling posts go in Organix, now. That's cool, but it seems to be like the same 6 people in them joints. Folks just don't come into them, for whatever reason. We used to have platinum cycling posts in here. So...if Cyren will suffer me this one post, let's kick it off in here. I like to hear a bunch of different folks' experience, questions, etc. Whatcha got? What's new? Where did you ride? I got in 61 miles this weekend. Both days, tepms were in the high 60's when I rolled out. Lovely.

Not on that 50 miles in a day level yet. Still getting my strength and stamina back. I can do a good 10-15 mile ride right now.

Loving the road bike. Light, nimble and swift. My other bike is a mountain bike. But when I put it in the shop, I saw this:

http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/absolute-19-disc-

Copped a week later. I'm now a two bike family.

my road bike, A Fuji SST 1.3 that I built and I recently copped a Fuji Nevada 29er...for days when I want to hop on the the trail or bullshit around: http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/nevada-29-11-

this is basically what my road bike looks like...I substituted different components and wheels to fit what I wanted, but this is the jist of the bike: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fuji-sst-1-3-c-road-bike-2014/rp-prod147060

Its pretty entry level, I just ride the greenways for exercise and my ACL recovery. I'll take it on the dirt trails when Im fully recovered. Its fast as hell and is probably the best shifting bike I've owned... and I've had a few.

i moved in with my gal and I've just not had anytime to ride.

my road bike - the roubaix has been gathering dust and it needs an adjustment - the gears are a bit crunchy. still love the 105 11speed.

i actually just pumped some money into my beater/city bike. We've been kicking it for over 12 years now (ga'damn). New brake levers, new chainring, new chain. tried to get a new fork (it was bent for a looooong time but I kept riding it). Its seriously the best bike I've owned through the years because its lugged steel and it WAS a crit road bike so the clearances are tight. it accelerates quickly, corners like fuck and its very compliant so the road evens out.

I let a friend ride my SST and he said it's every bit as precise as his Giant outfitted with Ultegra 6800. I'm getting the itch to build something this winter and it will definitely have 105 11spd on it, again.

I have been dreaming of a spring/summer only build based on a Daccordi bike I have in storage. If you've never heard of the brand its a lesser known italian make similar to Cinelli or Ciocc or Pinarello

The frame is very close to this: http://www.steel-vintage.com/daccordi-classic-bicycle-detail

I've also been really dying to get a good mountain bike ride in but mountain bike rides are hard to sort out if you live in new york city

I don't know what direction I want to go in. I'm scouting out frame choices, now. Pinarello is definitely in the running...as well as Look, an S-Works Tarmac and Ridley.

Do you have pictures of what you're referring to? Curious how a bicycle is reminiscent of something pertaining to Batman.

saying he was gonna try to do a Grand Fondo...couldn't tell what bike he had, though. That Venge is reasonably light, but it's fast as fuck because it's so fucking aero. Specialized claims up to 5 minutes off 40k.

What do you mean by hard to sort out?

I'm a novice bike rider in NYC myself currently riding a Giant hybrid for the sake of conversation.

Picked up a state bike. Was doing single speed non stop. The switched to single to work (downhill) then fixed home (uphill). Two weeks ago I switched to fixed all the time. My legs feel great and I love the amount of control I have.

Thinking of trying bike polo.

..while Organix is available for this dialogue and others, GD will always be the place that most people congregate (outside of OkaySports). its never an issue to have these discussions on this forum.

*that said, this summer was smooth sailing until my hit & run incident a couple weeks ago. fortunately, i walked away with only minor scrapes and bruises. unfortunately, bike didn't fair as well. dude snapped my bottom bracket like a twig. all this, and i was in the bike lane.

reported the incident (with witnesses), but without a plate #, its highly unlikely dude will ever be brought to justice.

repairs are currently in progress, along with a few upgrades.

ride safe & swift...

..the integrity of the frame was never compromised.

somehow, he managed to snap my bottom bracket stem, without as much of a scratch on the bracket housing. almost looks like someone sheered everything with a jedi lightsaber right through the arm gap. the frame, drop, and housing are unscathed.

since i have the experience & tools, i'm gonna put them to good use. i have a mechanic assisting me as well.

as the little one gets heavier, it's the only way I can feasibly see being able to do the commute home with her in tow.

I haven't been on the bike much at all this summer. And probably won't until November at the earliest.

I know tons of people who ride when it's hot...I do it...but there's no advantage to it. When it's dead summer...I'm usually out and back in before it really gets hot. But you don't strike me as the type to be up an on the bike at 7am, lol.

It's the third time riding.

I have a bottom of the line KHS road bike, I train for the ride on an old Specialized mountain bike that kicks my ass. I bornally ride at night and do about 20-25 miles per ride

still coming to grips with it lol i've been in mourning ...

it was a hybrid - diamondback insight one

trying to figure out how i want to replace it

been thinking about trying to build a fixie (i have no idea how to do it but think it could be a cool little project lol)

but i am wondering if i am going to miss not having the hybrid

i'm in LA and mostly a lot of street and beach riding

i've never owned a fixie or ridden one.....should i even consider this route? or should i stick with another hybrid?

it's not going to be easy. How hilly are your rides? Also, a thing to consider is do you want a fixed gear (fixie) or just a single gear. Difference being...a single gear just has one gear and a freewheel hub...you can spin the pedals backwards (in other words...take a break from pedaling). A fixie has a transmission...if the bike is moving, the pedals are moving. It's either stop or go.

thank you.

i love pedaling backwards so that is a no go

LA is pretty hilly at times but I never really changed my gears on my diamondback ... had my little sweet spot so that is why i think single gear might be an option....but not sure

..if you're thinking of switching to fixie for the low.

you can get a decent bike, get used to riding single speed (w/flip hub for options), and upgrade as needed.

but like Dstl said, make sure this is what you really want. with a single speed, YOU are the gears. hills are unforgiving, but the amount of control/leverage you have riding fixie is unparalleled. life without gears isn't for everyone, but it can be a lot of fun.

I've only ridden my other bikes like twice. I started off just using the single speed after giving the fixed a brief try and nearly busting my neck because I tried to coast. Then I started doing single speed to work (downhill) then fixed home (uphill). And then I just went full fixed. I have a brake. I use it when necessary. But slowing down, stopping, adjusting. There's nothing like that control.

I imagine it's the difference between driving a car with cvt and going to a stick.

I'm giving bike polo a shot this week. I love fixed that much right now.

The tires are thicker so I don't pop as many tubes. Less parts. Less cleaning.

on my road bike, I push a pretty big gear at all times, so that I can accelerate pretty much at a moment's notice. Even with that, it's not close to the control you have with fixed gear...it's instantaneous.

I was approaching a yellow a few weeks ago and needed to speed up to catch it. There was no shifting, no worries if my chain was gonna slip. It was all about building speed and then building more. My limit was me.

Just the idea that I can go as fast as I'm willing to try to go is great.

Probably gonna break a bone with polo though.

..finally got my bike back on the road last week (a month after the hit & run).

a few upgrades (finally mounted my bullhorns, bar end brake calipers, new stem, forged steel bottom bracket, & steel forks). taking my time getting used to the new stance (esp extended on the bullhorns), but the increase in power/speed is nice.

took her out for her 1st official group ride with my crew yesterday for our annual rockaway beach ride (30 miles, rd trip). she handled like a new corvette (quick, agile, with plenty of torque & power). smooth sailing the entire route.

its good to be back.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1817898551778094/

New Yorkers are being killed or injured every day, just walking to school or riding their bike home from work.

If it’s not safe for us to ride alone, then we ride together. On September 15, we ride to demand safe passage for all New Yorkers.

#Sept15 #RideTogether

Please join Transportation Alternatives, Families For Safe Streets, Right of Way, Black Girls Do Bike, Kidical Mass BK, WE Bike NYC, Recycle-A-Bicycle, 5BBC, Bike New York, Time's Up, NYC Mechanical Gardens Bike Coop, Get Women Cycling, and Century Road Club Association (CRCA) on September 15 when we ride together to demand streets safe for biking and walking.

We ride for 17 people killed biking; 74 people killed walking; 29 people killed by cowardly hit-and-run drivers so far in 2016. More cyclists have been killed in the first 8 months of 2016 than in all of last year. Hit and run drivers have killed more people so far this year than in all of 2015.

This is a bike ride, but whether you ride a bike or not, all New Yorkers who care about Vision Zero are welcome to join us at the start and finish.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:
- Wear yellow. Bring lights and a bell for your bike.
- This is a peaceful and non-violent protest ride.
- We will obey all traffic laws at all times and stop at all red signal lights, unless directed otherwise by an NYPD officer.

Gather at 6 pm at the Fountain of Pamona at E. 59th St & 5th Ave, Manhattan. We ride at 6:30 pm.

it seems to be the higher end of the lower end fixed gear spectrum

i went to the bike shop yesterday to check them out along with the 6ku

the sales guy had me leaning towards purefix over the 6ku since it comes stock with better tires

but i'm wondering if there is something else i should be considering

any other brands i should check out?

any good sites i should hit up?

so far i have looked on state bicycle, bikes direct and city grounds

purefix/state/6ku: damn-near identical set ups and they all come with entry level tires (usually kenda). i chose 6ku because of their partnership with aventon and the options available for parts. the real differences you'll need to look for (and decide on) are:

• steel vs carbon fiber vs aluminum (difference in weight, strength, durability, torque)
• road vs track (difference in fit/stance)

what i did:

i started with a 6ku frame (steel) and made upgrades. i replaced the stock stem & riser bar with a specialized stem, svmono bullhorns, bar-end brake calipers, and lizard-skin grips (not a fan of tape). also replaced the standard bottom bracket with one made of forged steel. upgraded from kenda tires to gatorskins (haven't had a flat tire from road debris since). added a timbuk2 saddlebag and copped a deployable fender from http://www.musguard.com/ and i was ready to roll.

http://i.imgur.com/kz3HkKk.jpg

i'm currently building my next track bike (carbon alloy, details coming soon), and recently made a come up on frame, wheel set, and tires. taking my time on this set up, but it should be ready to hit the streets next spring.

*btw: what were the details regarding the theft of your bike and what lock (and the lock-up style) were you using?

yep...exactly what I need to know

i am leaning towards going to with the 6ku and upgrade/build it out

i didn't know about the partnership with aventon

yeah i knew about the frame differences. my old bike was aluminum which i loved since i have to take it up and downstairs. already figured i'd suck it up for now with the steel frame and upgrade eventually once i really know that a fixed gear is a good fit for me.

and yeah...definitely road...although i halfway considered this fuju:

your bike is dope! roughly how much did the upgrades run you? i'm guessing the first upgrade i should go for is the tires.

def excited to see the track bike you build.

as for the details on my bike theft and lock. i literally had the same set up as you, kryptonite with the cable. i had it registered but from what i read to get reimbursed the lock needed to be left behind and pics to prove that it had been tampered with. they took the lock too :/

fortunately, the difference in weight for steel vs aluminum with pure/state/6ku is less than 3-5 lbs. *i chose steel initially because i'm heavier than i appear, and exert quite a bit of torque when i really get into a groove. after a bit more research and experience with carbon frames, i'm comfortable with the design/engineering. rest assured, if you want to roll with a lighter frame, you won't have any issues.

that fuji is very nice (i have a friend with that exact model). be sure to check out the aluminum/carbon frame sets for purefix & 6ku as well:

thank you! my upgrades were roughly $200 (with discounts from nashbar & bikesdirect), plus the cost of labor (although i can do most of it on my own).

it was the second time. not an ideal bike for those conditions but definitely a worthy cycling event- winding around epic art installations, people in costume high as fuck (like you), gorgeous lunar landscape-like topography, etc, all while everyone's clothing, wheels and bikes are lit up like tron at night when all is glowing:

next level experience. extreme conditions in all ways, with art and creativity really driving it, a vast spectrum of interests are there among the hundreds of camps, and ofen crazy fun / surreal at times too. i've been part of a camp that promotes social justice culture on "the playa", que viva camp as well as filipino themed camp. i've been twice in three years and plan on many more, as well as the spin off regional festivals. register on the very detailed website and be ready for the two rounds of ticket sales in january and july!

than the current hybrid Giant Escape bike that I have now. It's cool to get around NYC, but it take some turns on the pedals before I get to a decent clip of speed and I don't feel secure going downhill on the rare slopes in NYC.

Just so I don't feel like a total glutton, I think I'm going to wait until tax rebate time next year before I get a new bike since I've only had my current one for five months now. Definitely going to get something speedier though. Out of curiosity, of the road/mountain bike varieties out there, which type of the faster bikes can I NOT attach a rear rack too? Having a rear rack is necessary as I like to use my bike to carry goods as I do chores around NYC.

- it's a lot like pick up basketball.
- I didn't have the right bike. Should have had a left hand brake, smaller wheels, slick tires, and disc brakes
- hydraulic brakes - JESUS CHRIST. Who needs brakes to be that responsive? I went over the handlebars within minutes. Luckily I landed on my feet.
- Enjoyed the diversity. Been sober for the month so I didn't get to partake in the full social aspect, but that it wasn't all white folks was cool.
- I'll definitely go back.
