"A Tribe Called Quest Album #6 Exists"

This doesnt sound like a money grab by the label

http://ambrosiaforheads.com/2016/08/a-tribe-called-quest-new-album/

Almost 16 years ago, A Tribe Called Quest released its fifth album, The Love Movement. A Top 3 debut, the album arrived to the public following word from the group that it would be their last. In addition to frustrations with the act’s lifelong label, Jive Records, Q-Tip publicly spoke about a growing creative rift between him and Phife Dawg—which was later chronicled in documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life. That September, 1998 LP would earn a gold plaque, though never to be followed up.

In the time that has passed, Jive Records was absorbed by Epic Records, each A.T.C.Q. member released solo and side albums. Founding member Jarobi also would reunite with his band-mates on a number of tours and public appearances. Nothing more significant would transpire, however, than the March 22 death of Phife Dawg.

Unknown to the public, before Phife’s death from kidney failure, he, Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi had recorded a sixth album as A Tribe Called Quest.

Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid confirmed the album’s existence in a conversation with the Rap Radar Podcast. At the 14:00 mark, when asked about the status of OutKast, Reid shifted the discussion to another Hip-Hop group thought to be permanently on hiatus. “You know what I’m excited about though? A Tribe Called Quest. has A Tribe Called Quest album coming.” Asked if the release is a compilation of unused material, L.A. clarified, “It’s an album that recorded before Phife passed away. I’m really happy about it, man. It’s really something special. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about out of everything we’re working on.”

While Reid was not at Jive during the 1990s, Epic now is responsible for that label’s artists. The high-profile executive touched upon his close bond with Q-Tip. When Reid was CEO at Arista Records in 2000, Q-Tip was a label star, thanks to his 1999 gold-certified solo debut, Amplified.

“ a long relationship. Q-Tip’s a real friend, man. We didn’t hang out, take pictures, and act Hollywood, but he’s a friend. He’s made some incredible music and I love it.” As far as Tribe’s yet-to-be-titled next album, L.A. Reid confirmed complete participation. “Phife is there —the whole group: Jarobi, the entire group, everybody. It’s great too.” Reid promised that this album would not become another tease without delivery. “It’s coming very soon, it’ll be first album in 18 years.”

Just now caving into pressure from Epic Records and LA Reid to make an album they really don't want released? Why would that be the case, especially with Phife now gone? That logic doesn't track to me.

I'm tempering mine as well but I'm gonna allow myself some hope on this one. Reid is gonna be asked about this incessantly now, don't think he would say it without seriously considering the ramifications for all involved.

But yeah, let's hope for the best. Favorite group of all-time no question. It would be insane.

Jason Newman: Two years ago, Q-Tip said that Tribe's opening slot for Kanye West would be the group's last shows. Did you agree with that decision?

Phife Dawg: I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. We haven't performed together since then.

Jason Newman: Would you be open to more performances with the group?

Phife Dawg: Absolutely. I think it is ludicrous that we are not performing together.

Jason Newman: In 2015, where is the group at mentally?

Phife Dawg: Tribe is no longer a group, first off. So once Q-Tip made the announcement that those were the last two shows, that was pretty much it, for real.

Jason Newman: What do you think is the main impediment Tribe Called Quest isn't a group anymore?

Phife Dawg: (Long pause) I can't really talk about it, to be honest. Because when I talk, my mouth gets me in trouble. I'm the type of dude that tries to keep it 100 and I always get in trouble for it. But I will say: it's dumb, and I don't agree with it and we're doing the fans a great injustice by not getting together and rocking, and that's all I can really speak on as far as that goes.

Jason Newman: In a more general sense, if other members were open to going into the studio and recording a new album, would you consider that?

Phife Dawg: I don't know. I don't know because if we can't get together and do shows, it's going to be even more difficult going into the studio and recording an album. Think about it: The shows that we do are 60 minutes of your day for whatever amount of money. It's just 60 minutes of your day and then you go on with your life, so forth and so on. I don't see nothing wrong with doing 15 shows a year for a good amount of money. Sixty minutes of your day and you keep it moving. We all have families.
But at the same time, on the flip side of that, I believe in consistency. If we're not a group, we're not a group. If we are, we are. Let's get this money. If we're not, then let's not even tease the fans. None of that craziness.

Phife did an interview 2 years ago and talked about the album. He said all the differences were worked out and that the album was being done with everyone's input, and all 5 members were in the studio at the same time. It was supposed to come out last year but I think his illness had a lot to do with it.

about getting the Tribe members on his solo album. As secretive as Tip is, I can totally see them keep stuff under wraps in case something didn't work out later down the line. Or sadly in this case, a serious illness and death. I'm like everyone else, just want it to be true. I think The Last Zulu turned into whatever this is.

I am buying it regardless.....but a small part of me knows that it won't be classic first 3 Tribe albums. After 'The Love Movement', it was evident the chemistry had dissipated.

But as a Tribe/Native fan, they have my money guaranteed. I'm really hoping it is no wack posthumous Biggie/Pac type album or a throw away album to get out of contract.

name 3 good songs on each album besides Stressed Out.

if your introduction to Tribe was these albums then sure, but if you followed them from the beginning those last 2 albums are terrible... and i mean really really terrible. I cant even listen to them.

Makes it more suspect. I think if this was a project to be proud of, I think one of the Tribe members would've broke the news.

By L.A. Reid saying this, it's just a corporate capitalist trying to hype up and get as much out of a golden era group. With the loss of Phife, sales will be up just for nostalgic reasons. There is money there so they know they can get something substantial out of one last project.

Hopefully I am wrong and it is classic. Well, I know for sure there should be a few dope cuts.

LA Reid has nothing to gain by bringing this up on his own if there isn't involvement from the group. They could easily just reply on social media that it's bullshit and they don't have an album at all and wouldn't do anything without Phife. But it's been a week now, no response from any of the 3, but we do have confirmations from Questlove, Von Pea, Statik Selektah that there is indeed an album.

I understand keeping expectations in check but acting like Reid is some wild dude spouting off at the mouth doesn't make sense. He is a respected dude and had no reason to bring this up at all, he did so willingly. Regardless of what he says, any new Tribe release will get big attention anyway.

It's not that the album they recorded is without Phife. We have confirmation that this was done before Phife's unfortunate passing. It's just a question of whether or not it is a project they are proud of. Or was it a project where they got together and tried to recapture the chemistry...failed, then just put it up in a vault someplace never to be released. L.A. seeing an opportunity, knowing that whether wack or not the album will initially sell like hotcakes and the dust won't settle until 9 months to a year after, capitalizing. It's not 50 Cent/Justin Bieber numbers, but a recent Tribe album is untapped gold.

they didn't like they way it was being presented. You think for a second they wouldn't holler it to the heavens if Epic was trying to release a joint they weren't ok with? Tribe ain't no suckers or new to this game. I'm sure the folks at GOOD music have tried to get Tip to finally fucking release some of his solo stuff, but if he ain't ready it ain't happening. Chris Lighty ain't here to snatch that music out of his hands and press the issue. Knowing this, I can't fathom any record level and especially one run by someone as savvy as Reid to go against this beloved group's wishes and release something without their consent. Doesn't jibe.

It's a touchy subject probably, because of Phife being gone. Surely they are being real methodical about the way it's presented and released. I can totally see why they aren't being loose with the info. But to me it seems LA Reid let his excitement get the better of him in dropping the info. But again, the confidence with which he dropped is a unique part of this. Only he looks bad if nothing comes of this.

and I think that's why people are hesitant to get excited.

Tip had issues with the Tribe doc so who knows how he feels about this album. There is a history of record execs releasing shit that the artist doesn't think is up to par.

Also would hope Tip would get out in front of it and big it up FOR Phife.
