Zendaya’s SPIDER-MAN Role Could Break The Internet
Is this the next racist fanboy outrage?

By Devin Faraci Aug. 18, 2016

Teen star Zendaya has been cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it's not been clear what character she's playing. Now a report from The Wrap indicates that her role is an incredibly familiar one, and her being cast in it might well cause much gnashing of teeth among fanboys, especially the vocal racist wing of fanboy culture.

This could be a spoiler so don't read on if you don't want to be spoiled.

Zendaya is playing Mary Jane Watson. You thought the internet got upset when they cast people with the wrong hair color, imagine how Reddit is gonna react to this.

It makes sense. Footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming was shown at Comic-Con this year and the very beautiful Zendaya was saddled with big, baggy clothes and a messy hair style. Why hire this actress to play a frumpy role? Well, you do it if your eventual reveal is that she's actual future model MJ. Zendaya looked great as the frumpy, snarky dork in the footage, and we already know she looks great all done up, so the character arc seems to write itself.

I love this news. And having already seen Zendaya in action in footage, I love her casting. The whole thing makes me happy, and I'm psyched that Marvel is doing this kind of positive race bending.

Zendaya’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Role Revealed (Exclusive)

Umberto Gonzalez | August 18, 2016 @ 3:16 PM

Signs point to the Disney Channel star playing a familiar character in the webslinger’s history in Sony’s upcoming reboot
Umberto Gonzalez | August 18, 2016 @ 3:16 PM
Zendaya

Spoiler alert: Don’t read on if you don’t want to know details about Zendaya’s role in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

Zendaya will be playing long-time Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson in next summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” two individuals with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Diehard Spidey fans have long speculated about whom the 19-year-old Disney Channel star would portray in Sony’s high-profile reboot of the superhero franchise, starring British actor Tom Holland as a teenage Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man.

At least one recent draft of the script has Zendaya’s character dropping several clues to her identity as Mary Jane, one of the most familiar love interests in the Marvel superhero’s universe — and played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi‘s 2002-07 movie trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as the webslinger.

Zendaya, the star of the Disney Channel series “Shake It Up!” and “K.C. Undercover,” was cast back in March to play a “key role” as a character named Michelle.

At the time, no further details were provided about her character or whether it would the romantic lead opposite Holland — who made a sensational big-screen debut as Spidey earlier this year in Disney/Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.”

Given how secretive superhero movie castings can sometimes be, pseudonyms are often used. Marion Cotillard‘s role in “The Dark Knight Rises” comes to mind.

Sony declined to comment. Representatives for Marvel and Zendaya did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Sony and Marvel have made it clear that director Jon Watts’ reboot — with a script by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers — will focus on a high school-aged Peter Parker.

The cast also includes Michael Keaton, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” produced by Produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, will be released on July 7, 2017.

Zendaya is repped by CAA and Monster Talent Management

Miles is a huge risk on a blockbuster movie, though. A lower budget film than this, or a Netflix show would be fine. But you'll have to have a lot more than us going out for an MCU franchise starting movie, and Marvel is going to want to guarantee that they make that money back.

A Miles movie likely means no Mary Jane, no Aunt May, no Osbornes, no Doc Ock, none of the names or characters that are iconic to the series. Shit, no Peter Parker, and people go "nah, I'm not gonna see it because this isn't the real Spider-Man." So rewrite the character a bit. Don't just make Peter Parker Black/Hispanic. They've already done better than that by making Miles. But Miles needs to be introduced to a huge audience before he makes blockbuster movie money. So introduce him in Homecoming, or somewhere else.

Sure, they can do better as far as representation, but unless they make money on doing better, it isn't worth it for them, and in the long run, isn't worth it for us either.

That said, I'm excited for the animated Miles Morales movie. It's not the same, but it's a step in popularizing the character.

outrage if any.

Casting one of the most non-Black looking biracial
people you can find isn't really noteworthy imo.
This is damn near like casting the rapper Logic
as "the Black character."
