"Stop inching forward at stoplights"

and other shit that people do while driving that bothers you...

Let's say driver A is at the front of the pack, stopped right before the crosswalk like they're supposed to at a red light

Now driver B pulls up behind him, a good full car length behind. They sit there for a good 4-5 seconds, then decide that they want to get a little closer

The bullshit crawl forward ensues. Being the 3rd driver in this line, I now have two options

Either look like an asshole by leaving a car lenth (and possibly more) in front of me, or look like an asshole for inching forward 30 seconds after I originally stopped (I live in Vegas, these lights will literally take 2 minutes or more)

Seriously, why the fuck do people insist on doing this? Is it a nervous driving tick or something?

File this under things that make me irrationally mad, but still needed its own post

vs. no blinker at all.

observationally around these parts, i notice A LOT that people will NOT use their blinker to move over towards the left, however, they will use a blinker to get into the right lane..... baffling

just please use blinkers, they're there for a reason.

End up sitting at a light for three turns because Katie is too scared to pull out into the intersection and go when the light is about to turn red.

and they just keep inching forward and then they are almost in the middle of the intersection because they light didn't turn when they thought it would.

My biggest pet peeves in CO are:

-people always driving slow as fuck in the left lane with no one in the right lane at all

-people don't know how to merge and drive like pussies. Most people just come to a complete stop in the merge lane even though there is plenty of room to get up to speed and actually merge.

And in general, people who do the exact speed limit when it ends in a 5 drive me fucking nuts. Like people doing exactly 35 instead of just going 40. It doesn't bother me as much if they are going 40 in a 40 though for some reason. Either way I go 5 over all the time.

Like they're trying to time it based on how they THINK the lights should work, but things always differ by city, and sometimes even intersections based on how much traffic they get and what time of day it is.

Can't wait for the day I see someone get pulled over for inching past the crosswalk anticipating the green

Once I have passed, I get back in the right lane and proceed to go back to my 5 over cruise. If you want to go faster, God bless. Only noticed dude originally because he was one of those mad-aggressive, gotta-change-lanes-every-few-seconds drivers. Back then I used to hotbox while riding a lot, so I'd find a good speed and chill. Dude would go flying by me switching lanes, then a few minutes later I'd see him in my rear view switching lanes all aggressively still.

Fool had no grasp of concepts like "flow of traffic," "passing lanes," or "exit lanes."

Fucking assholes. The fuck do they need to stop so far back behind the light or car in front of them?

A lot of people shouldn't be driving automobiles. They just don't have the concentration, spatial awareness or personal responsibility to be able to operate a vehicle safely.

I blame our car-centered culture and the fact that most states pass out driver's licenses to anyone that doesn't crash during the test.

- not signaling when changing lanes, often when i'm clearly in their blind spot, so i have to hit the brakes or abruptly change lanes to avoid a problem.
- going 60 mph (in every lane except the slow lane where they belong) versus a 65 mph speed limit on the freeway.
- hard braking as if they forgot they need to make that right turn, instead of just being safe and circluing around the block and doing it again.
- no regard of right of way in the parking lot (let alone a street). if it's a t-insersection and the lot exit is straight ahead for me, but requires you to turn, at least look left or right to see if i'm coming up on you. don't just pull out.

prius folks aren't aggressive drivers, just invariably one-track minded and/or smugly entitled because they're saving the earth one carbon at a time.

no offense if you own one.

if you take into account the amount of pollution it takes to build a prius (especially the battery) plus factor in any amount of driving you do in one that spools up the combustion engine you see you're never "saving" anything. Shit, you don't even save money by owning one (it takes about 60,000 miles of driving before you break even on gas savings vs price of the car).

When compared to back in NV. And I can confirm that, out here anyway, they are definitely head up their own ass drivers. Just kind of careening along like there's nobody within a five hundred foot radius of them. Not sure if it's the snobby attitude that goes along with driving a Prius or just a strange coincidence, but it's definitely a thing.

I HATED that car. ZERO power steering, stick shift, no AC, barely functional heat, tiny as shit, but for some reason we were stuck driving that fucking thing EVERYWHERE despite having a much larger, far more comfortable Chevy Celebrity Eurosport in the driveway.

Imagine 5 people driving from Detroit to Toronto in the middle of winter in a goddamned Yugo. We were in the back of that thing in parkas and under blankets trying to stay warm the whole trip.

Oddly when we got there the Yugo wasn't available for sale anywhere near Toronto so we got an assload of people asking us about it looking to buy one.

They built one close to the crib on 67th Ave and Buckeye about a year after we moved to Phoenix. As long as we're living in the SW valley, that is my go-to spot for energy drinks in the morning.

" Question: I think you should go over the rules of merging and yielding. People just don't get it.

I'm merging on the freeway; my blinker is on; I have nowhere else to go. I am not trying to cut you off. Please let me in!

– Denise, Fife

Answer: It’s a classic road-rage situation: merging traffic struggling to get onto the arterial, and traffic on the mainline refusing to give way.

Either that, or merging drivers who think their turn signal gives them the right to move left, no matter what.

Your frustration is understandable, but the law sides with drivers already on the freeway. They have the right-of-way, and they have no obligation – aside from common courtesy – to make life easier for you.

“The responsibility to safely merge into traffic from an on-ramp lies with the driver of the merging vehicle,†said Trooper Guy Gill, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol. “Traffic on the freeway has the right of way. There is no law that requires a driver occupying the right lane on the freeway to move over, slow down or take any other action to let a merging vehicle on the freeway.â€"

Can't be any clearer than that: Shit is all on you to merge safely; it's the law everywhere.

thank you, judge dredd.

that article's about washington state. while cali dmv handbook technically has the same application re: right of way, the CHP says it ain't as one-sided as you'd like it to be.

"If a collision occurred while the 'merge' was happening between two vehicles," Soubirous wrote, "law enforcement would not refer to the driver's handbook. We would refer to the vehicle code to find collision 'fault,' which often has court-tested case law to back it up."

http://www.pe.com/articles/freeway-609312-code-handbook.html

and second clause of the VC entry

21804 (b) A driver having yielded as prescribed in subdivision (a) may
proceed to enter or cross the highway, and the drivers of all other
vehicles approaching on the highway shall yield the right-of-way to
the vehicle entering or crossing the intersection.

bottom line, i'm letting you merge if i can help it, with the reciprocal/good faith assumption that someone will let me merge the next time *i* need to.

if someone's tenet is "naw, fuck him... i ain't letting him in 'cause the right of way is MINE," when they could otherwise take the extra 3 seconds to safely do so, then they probably mad about other parts of their life too.

2) where did you learn how to drive
3) fuck you
4) learn how to merge
5) i had the right away
6) fuck you harder and pox on your family if you did that without using a blinker!!!!

i'm assuming you mean a regular road. which if that's the case, then yeah, it's easier for someone to merge, since they're facing a more controlled set of circumstances.

if i'm accelerating to merge, and all of the sudden the opposing car in the SLOW LANE suddenly does too and mirroring me, that's a dick move.

that's the crux of it.

... And we all learned this in drivers ed. If you didn't, you weren't paying attention and deserve to run off the road.

You are to accelerate to the speed of oncoming traffic and merge, but traffic has the right of way; not you.

So... git yer ass behind me and don't expect shit else.

IMO practicality and safety supersede all that other shit.

If I have some asshole tailgating me and someone's trying to merge and there's space ahead of me, fuck it, I'll floor it and get out of dodge so they can get in safely. If nobody is on my ass and I'm not flying already, I'll slow it down or switch lanes.

If traffic is tight, traffic is tight and they're on their own. It is what it is in that case. People only have so much time to merge and if the only concern is right of way you're putting people in danger, yourself included.

I get who the law will will support in that scenario.

It's far more practical and productive for everyone for drivers to just pay attention and let people merge if at all possible, where necessary and if practical.

Yes, and I end up having to slow up or whatever to maneuver myself into traffic safely while being mindful of the fact that oncoming traffic has no duty to let me in. I figure it out.

that the semi's are moving left to pass you on a highway, then you deserve to spend time in a fiery pit that resembles hell.

This happens a lot more than it should on the 15 from Vegas to Cali and vice versa.

I'm doing 70 in the left lane
you are doing 65 in the right lane
I put on my indicator to get over and the car speeds up to 75 and then slams on their brakes cause they are about to run into me.

you weren't doing 75.. stop fronting.

also hate the car who can't maintain their speed once they are in the front of the pack. They speed past everyone doing 75 but once they are in front they slow down to 65... then once traffic passes them they do it all over again a few minutes later.

Nah. He's fine.

If it's a wide open space and there's heavy traffic in the other lanes?

Yeah, if there people behind him. Even then he's actually trying to get to another lane.

Even when I speed up or slow down, I look over my shoulder and the idiot is just staying put right there.

I'm thinking this is a Cali/Orange County phenomenon because it only happened once in while back in NV. Out here it happens multiple times daily on both ends of my commute.

I had this one doofus (who realized that they were in the wrong turning lane) that decided that they would politely cut me off while pulling in front of me in the straight lane so that they could get to the next turning lane. When I honked at them because of the close call, this fool had the nerve to give me the finger as if I did THEM wrong. I wish I could've snapped that stupid finger off and poke that bastard in the eye with it. Jerk.

on a road where they've been doing construction work seemingly since I've been alive. It goes down to one lane, then back up to two. I looked before I jetted over, but apparently I didn't see him and he had to check up. After the road went back to two lanes, I purposely got over to the right and slowed up so he could catch up. I looked over and pointed to myself and mouthed "my bad man"...he smiled and gave me a thumbs up.

I feel awful if I cut someone off. I try my best to throw up a "my bad" hand or mouth "i'm sorry!" if we can see other. I make it a point to give that good driver "thanks!" wave when someone lets me in

These are rarely returned. The upside is that it practically makes my day whenever it is, but it's a dour, melodramatic "where's the humanity?" feeling when it's not.

Waiting in a line of cars at a light, 2 lanes. Dude in front of me decides he needs to be in the other lane and puts his signal on. The light turns green and I give him some time to make the move, but he's not aggressive enough and no one is waiting around for him in the other lane. Soon everyone in front of us has gone through the intersection and it's about to turn yellow and he's still sitting there with his blinker on blocking the whole lane. I give a short honk to indicate that his time is fucking up and he better move now. He finally gets over while yelling out the window at me (?) and I have to floor it to make it through the light. Everyone behind me is fucked.

I hate these "I made a mistake so everyone is going to pay for it while I try and force this move at the last second" ass mofos. If you can't make the move easily and safely just keep fucking going and then turn around and try again.

I can understand if someone is over the line at a stop sign if their view is obscured by some object. However, at stop lights, the light itself will tell you when it's safe to go, so there is absolutely no reason to be way over the line to where you're making those of us who are making a left turn swing way out in order to avoid your goofy car. kind of a grey area. But yeah they are finally going to legalize it. But if done correctly it is very safe. The riders that speed past stopped traffic super fast are breaking the law. I believe they can travel more than 10 or 15 mph faster than the traffic they are splitting.

yeah, full-throttling it through traffic is def a no-no and should be legislated. it definitely startles most unsuspecting drivers and increases the likelihood that the motorcycle gets swiped. whenever i see/hear a motorcycle accident on the bay bridge or a major highway, i always assume it's from that.

it's fucking hilarious though when a CHP motorcycle shows up on the road and all bikers consequently slow up and fall back like a caravan behind him.

That lane splitting shit is terribly unsafe. I've seen my share of dudes get clipped doing that dumb shit and they all deserve it. Sit your ass in the lane like you're supposed to and the shit wouldn't happen.

Going through two lanes can be done perfectly fine, particularly in tight traffic. It's the bob and weave at mach speed fuckers that can get it.

And don't get started on some "Cars can't split lanes" shit. I've had to do it to narrowly avoid death in my old Escort several times. Shit ain't cool, I was pretty sure I was going into cardiac each time, and it prolly looked like some Hollywood action sequence to people looking at it from their cars, but it can be done if the car is small enough.

How does this affect you from the comfort of your (presumably) giant, air-conditioned SUV?

I filter because I'm not going to be:

1. Rear-ended by some asshole on their phone that "didn't see me on that little motorcycle." When I ride between lanes, I bet they see me then.

2. Stuck in a pack of cars (1/4 on their phones) that can't see me because of the giant blind spots that SUVs have. Now I have someone driving slow in front of me and someone tailgating me and someone on the side, and no where to go... on a bike. Not the spot I want to be in.

I guess fuck tho... I should buy a car if I want to survive on the streets, huh?

they're fined on the regular. Arizona Revised Statue 28-903 very clearly prohibits lane splitting:

"C. A person shall not operate a motorcycle between the lanes of traffic or between adjacent rows of vehicles."

It also says that the only motorcycle operators that have the authority to split lanes are cops while on duty.

You presume entirely too much. I don't own an SUV. I've owned two of them in my adult life whereas I've owned maybe 20 cars.

You have to follow the same laws of the road as everyone else. That you're on a motorcycle doesn't mean shit. If traffic is slow, deal with it. If you're too scared, buy a car.

Like a bike going past you is affecting you in any way. It's called "lane splitting" and "filtering" by the way, and it done in most place s in the world.

Maybe if you put the phone down and paid attention you would get startled and scared when a bike rides past you.

surely dont' give a shit about yours. in general those are not the people i want to fuck with. i got a fam. I got a good life.

It's just scary when people put all that at risk and you want to respond.

When I was younger i got into it on some road rage shit one time, like passing each other dangerously, hitting brakes and giving the finger, flashing lights all that shit. My brother was in the car with me, and we were a little smoked out. The dude we were fucking with literally followed us all the way home and into our driveway. We looked at each other like 'well, fuck it, i guess we're gonna have to scrap'. So I turned off my car and we got out, not even acting crazy, just ready to see who had followed us and what we were up against (it was night and they had tinted windows so we had no idea). Whoever followed us hit reverse and booked it out of there, which is weird cuz my brother and I aren't the most intimidating duo - coupla laid back stoners at the time. I think back though, on all the ways that could have gone wrong.

to merge into traffic after making a hasty left into said traffic and get into head-on collisions with people coming the opposite direction that are actually making a legitimate left turn.

Fuck all you people that do this. Every one of you should die, bleeding out from your genitalia was slit open.

The center left turn lane is NOT a GODDAMNED MERGING LANE!

Wait until traffic clears in both directions to make your left turn like you were taught you fuckin idiot. No, you're not in a hurry, and even if you were... fuck you, wait your goddamned turn. If it takes too long for traffic to clear fuck you again. Wait or figure that shit out; you have options.

There's just no excuse for it. Tailgating in general is moronic and frankly I don't feel bad for any driver who crashes while doing it. My only hope is they only hurt themselves and nobody else with their maniacal impatience.

There are certain tailgating situations that are particularly egregious:

-If I'm in the fast lane, my speed is determined by the cars in front of me. I'm keeping 3-5 car lengths ahead of me depending on how open the lane to my right is. Tailgating me if I'm doing 70 in traffic- and there's ALWAYS traffic out here- with another car only 3-5 lengths ahead of me is fucking stupid. Me driving faster only makes me tailgate the guy in front of me and we'll still wind up back down to 70 anyways.

It's like people don't pay attention to anything beyond the car directly in front of them. You riding my ass won't make the guy in front of me drive faster, or the guy in front of him. This is where we are because this is what this lane is doing.

-Tailgating at any time when there open lanes on either side of you. If the guy in front of you is too slow and there are wide open lanes for you to pass, JUST FUCKING PASS THE GUY. If he hits the breaks and you slam your brakes, you're both fucked, but you're especially fucked. He might be an asshole but you're the one putting you both in danger.

-Tailgating on residential streets and damn near clipping people when they make a turn because you think you're on the fucking freeway.

I.E, the average drivers blind spot. I can't count how often people hug those blind spots and refuse to slow or speed up when you hit your blinker, practically begging you to cut them off so you can get over.

This also clogs traffic because a few of this pricks on the same road at the same time makes passing dangerous if not impossible. I wonder if people realize they do this but if we're on a three lane highway and three drivers are all staggered ever so slightly, it's ultimately no different than the hand-holding fuckers legs mentioned above.

And there's a stop sign or, even worse, a light coming up that can easily turn red?

Please, get into the left lane. There's no reason to make someone wait to make their right turn because you like the right lane.

It's not dangerous. People won't crash.

It's just a minor inconvenience that can be easily avoided.

what a lot of folks don't realize is that you're supposed to keep between 2 and 5 seconds between you and the car in front of you. As the speed of traffic increases, the distance between you and the car in front of you increases as well. This is to give you enough time to react to something going on with the cars in front of you. We were all taught this in driver's ed, but very few people actually do it. On the freeway, I pretty much live by it.

You know where you're going. It's your job to manage your route.

If you're in traffic and know you need to make a turn, you need to start positioning yourself early.

People don't need to tailgate (let's be real, that's exactly what "close the gap" means) the person in front of them to help you compensate for your refusal to properly manage your chosen route.

where you can either go straight or make a left/right.

i make a right with my blinker <-- however, i see this as the car making that left has to wait for oncoming traffic - the traffic either going straight or making a turn - either left or right.

im making a right turn, I'm oncoming traffic for them - despite which lane i turn into- they should wait then make their turn.

often the case is that car making that left turns into the left lane making me turn into the right lane making me wait for them to pass before i have to signal to get into the left lane.

i dont think thats the correct course of action for the car making that left.

i can't make sense of any of that

are you saying you're both turning onto the same street
him in the left lane, and you in the right?

if thats the case, he's supposed to wait for you to turn
but you're supposed to get into the rightmost lane
if you need to get in the left lane, you just have to get in the right lane and slow down and get behind them

we good.

all seriousness, the correct response is to turn into the right lane and to then get over into that left lane.

its just common sense to me i guess. my vehicle could kill you because its big and heavy and mindless, therefore the onus is on me, even if you make a mistake, to help you be safe. I'd rather adjust and everybody stay in one piece, than run over somebody on principle if it can be avoided.

if you so geared up you gotta whip around a biker at the light so you can turn right, you need to be asking yourself 'should driving gear me up this much?'

same with pedestrians.

yeah you're jaywalking across 4 lanes of traffic, but me not adjusting doesn't make me right.

I live in a college town.

Students take way too long to cross when they jaywalk and they cross whenever at intersections without any regard for the lights.

I feel a couple of them need to be bumped on GP. Not killed.....but definitely bumped.....as in hard enough to realize that recklessly jumping in front of moving vehicles can get you killed.

for adults to ride bicycles on the sidewalk, and for good reason. At the same time, I think it's reasonable for cyclists to stay out of the way of cars as much as possible while on the road since cars naturally go faster than bicycles and it's not fair for a cyclist to hold traffic up. At the same time, being a bully on the road behind the wheel of any automobile is pretty horrible behavior, especially since a car can do some serious damage to both a bicycle and its rider if an accident occurs.

it's bad as well because to pass them, you have to veer out that much further into the road and that makes it that much more possible for a car to hit you.

It's selfish behavior, plain and simple. Even worse if it's not being done on a dedicated bike path.

The far left turn lane always ends up having 2-3 people, while the middle has about 7-8. It's not a very long turn lane either

What's worse is I always see people stack up in that middle left turn lane, only to get in the left lane seconds after making the turn

And these are the people at the front of the pack. Makes no sense

In response to Reply # 0
Sat Aug-13-16 03:09 AM by BabyYoda

My #1 issue is people who drive slow in the fast lane!!

I think I have a curse with ending up behind people who want to drive super slow when I. he fast lane. I feel these people should drive in the middle lane or right lane. Let the speed demons like myself get our roll on and we will worry about the highway patrol, if they are around.

Next issue is people who tailgate or draft you like you are on a racetrack. I have had many people on my bumper and when I hit the pedal on they ass and switch lanes, then they hit their shit following me. I am talking about upwards to 100 mph. This is only done early in the morning when the traffic is super light.

Last issue is drivers who like to ride their brakes. It annoys the shit out of me!!

In all, I don't trip off of surface street drivers unless they drive super slow or cut me off or tailgate, especially people with fucked up cars.

Bonus: I have a brand new car. When I am parked in a parking lot, why is it that people with large pickup trucks, vans, etc. like to park next to me?

Why is it when I am parked in a stall and there is clearly plenty of open spaces in the lot meaning the lot is practically empty some fool decides to park right next to me and parks real close (door potentially hitting my door) when their door opens?

So, yeah, these are my issues with drivers.

They really have no reason to move.

Truthfully there's no such thing as a "fast lane" on American freeways. You're always supposed to pass on the right, and on a three lane freeway that means the center lane for passing people in the right lane and the far left to pass people driving in the center lane. Furthermore, in most of the country going even 1mph over the speed limit is illegal so passing by exceeding the speed limit is also illegal. Recently a few municipalities put laws on the books stating you can exceed the posted limit by 10mph briefly if you're passing, but ONLY if you're passing. Out here in AZ, DPS will ticket you for anything over the limit on the freeway, they're that strict so I don't fuck around. If the shit says 65, I'm doing 64 and fuck you for rollin up on my rear end. Some cops look at it like they have better shit to do than to write people tickets for 1-5mph over the limit, so they let it slide but you can't sit there and get mad 'cause you got hit with a 76 in a 75mph zone ticket.

I have been driving for a long time. If a person is driving 70-80 mph, then I am cool. If a person is driving 60 mph in the far left lane adjacent to the carpool lane, then they are going too slow!

I know the laws of my state and I know that exceeding the speed limit may result in being ticketed. You gotta know when to stab out and when to cruise.

However, I have had many highway patrolmen roll past me while driving darn near 80 and on one occasion had a highway patrol man pull me over for doing the exact speed(years ago). So, it just depends on the situation as well as their discretion .

I hate assholes who wanna be on some 64 mph bullshit. They need to take their brake surfing ass to the slower lanes and cruise behind a 53 footer.

so, yeah, I ain't too keen on going faster than what's posted.

I know on the turnpike section of I-44 between Tulsa and OKC folks do NOT go over the posted limit by more than 1mph and only do it to pass. Do you know the frustration of taking what seems like 20 minutes to pass a semi 'cause you're only going 1mph faster??? Shit is like a fuckin eternity!

People drive selfishly where I live. For instance, if a person is in the middle lane and sees a car driving fast in the left lane and right before that left lane car catches up to the middle lane car the middle lane car gets in front of the left lane car, then that shit was done on purpose.

Or..

Someone who is driving in the lane next to you speeds up, passes you, then gets in your lane and slows down while in front of you is doing that shit on purpose.

This is the shit that I am talking about. I can play that game as well, if necessary.

I will admit that I am an aggressive driver. However, I am a safe driver and always leaves space between myself and the driver in front of me. I do appreciate slow drivers who move over. Bless those good drivers.

a traffic court judge in cali ain't even entertaining a 2mph-over-the-limit violation as a standalone charge, and the most cops wouldn't even write the ticket if you ain't got warrants/probation, let alone show up in court to defend it.

People subconsciously like to park next to other cars. Everytime I park way the fuck out thinking "I'm good, there's no way someone will park next to me out here", I come back there there's someone parking right next to me.

My favorite spots are end spots next to curbs so you can park way over to one side.

People out here are impossible to figure out.

The folks that tailgate you on surface streets, aggressively switch lanes and pass you, just to come to an abrupt stop at the red light three seconds before you. You beat me to the red light. You win?

The aggressive freeway drivers that refuse to pass you. This has happened many times: I'm in a middle lane going 75-80 and this arsehole comes flying up behind me, starts to tailgate. I figure I'm going pretty fast, so if this guy wants to keep accelerating, he can go around me on either side. Nope. Instead, he keeps speeding up and backing off; just refusing to change lanes, despite numerous chances to do so. Some folks have even gone so far as to start flashing their headlights at me. What is the point of this?

The people that REEEAAAAALLLLLLY exaggerate the need to slow down for a right turn. Most surface street speed limits are 45-50mph and have dedicated right turn lanes when intersecting with another larger surface street. There is no legitimate reason to slow down to less than 15mph when turning on a green light. The ultimate WTF about this is that they will do this super slow exaggerated turn and then floor it to 55+ once the turn has been completed.

The bus drivers down here are very good. Back in NV, they must have been desperate for drivers and just hired whoever applied and spent next to no money training them. As a car driver and bus passenger, I never felt safe with the bus system there. Down here, the bus drivers are really aware and diligent. It's refreshing.

Like if there are two or three lanes to turn left, and the mofo in the middle/inside turn lane swings wide to the right or outermost turn lane in front of you.

Turn in your motherfuckin' lane first, then switch lanes. Or pay attention at the very least so your wide turning ass doesn't broadside me.
