http://theundefeated.com/features/michael-jordan-i-can-no-longer-stay-silent/

As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well.

“I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported.

Jordan speaks out on shootings of African-Americans, police

“Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change.

“To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference.

“We are privileged to live in the world’s greatest country – a country that has provided my family and me the greatest of opportunities. The problems we face didn’t happen overnight and they won’t be solved tomorrow, but if we all work together, we can foster greater understanding, positive change and create a more peaceful world for ourselves, our children, our families and our communities.”

So the most important athlete of his generation spent his entire career laying down the blueprint of the "vanilla off the court, mouth shut on any and every issue, turning a blind eye as kids robbed and killed one another for his overprice sweatshop sneakers" now at a time where people are speaking out, where other athletes that looked up to him and are in the middle of their careers some huge with everything to lose.

GTFOH.

He sees that people care. He sees the type of response, Melo/Wade/Bron/CP3 got and get for their continued presense. And now he wants in.

I'm good with MJ.

his brand could be in jeopardy. They just resister over 15K new accounts at Citizens Trust Bank (Black Owned) in Atlanta over the past 3 weeks.

I bet MJ's folks are seeing trends in the Black community where folks are looking at how their money is spent and who's supporting them. He's do well to stay ahead of the curve and donate this 2 Mill in advance to appease the masses in order to keep from losing Millions more later if folks turn on him for not speaking up like some the athletes are doing now.

I've already heard skepticism about this move from Jordan. Some folks, besides you, are already side eying the situation and are speculating that this is some kind of power move to keep profits high.

please clarify.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

...add that they are disturbed by attacks on police. Police shooting blacks and police being attacked themselves are 2 separate issues. One has been going on for 100 years and needs immediate attention. Its BS that you cant say black lives matter without offending someone who defends the police.

I cant remember who said it but I saw a clip where someone compared the welfare of animals. Nobody would assume that if you said save the whales that you would mean its okay to let koala bears die. Why doesnt the same logic apply with black men and police?

MJ took the safest stand he could take without jeopardizing his back account. He didnt say anything new or take any risks in support of his people. Seems reactionary to criticism against him to me.

Melo stays in the streets and isnt afraid to talk about injistices.

His response was something like "I"m glad MJ finally said something"

I truly believe Melo and a few other athletes on MJ's roster been pushing him to speak up.

He still played it too safe.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
