"Name some songs I need to play at my wedding reception."

I'm in charge of the music at my wedding reception, and I'm looking to make these fuckers dance for a couple hours.

What are some can't-miss wedding reception songs? What would get YOUR ass out of your seat?

What you play really depends on how the crowd reacts.

I did my friend's wedding and she gave me a list of latin themed music (because the bride and her mother were from Mexico.) Well that shit didn't really play with her super white friend and she requested that we find some music that got people on the floor.

What saved it was about 10GB of disco I preloaded - the young and the old all loved it (especially after drinking.) Stuff with EASY to find beats and no big surprises went over well.

Stomp by The Brothers Johnson was an especially big hit.

Also played stuff from: The Bee Gees, Donna Summers, Abba, Chic, Kool and The Gang, Commodores, Gap Band, etc.

Update with "current" disco hits like Robin Thicke, Pharell, etc.

Throw out this advice if you are DJ'ing ?uestlove's wedding.

If so, these our some of the "standards" for fite wolx weddings:

Britney Spears - Toxic
AC/DC - Your Shook Me All Night Long
Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl
Buster Poindexter - Hot, Hot, Hot
B-52 - Love Shack
Wild Cherry - Play the Funky Music
Kool & the Gang - Celebration
Dee-Lite - Groove is in the Heart
Plus stuff like Gangham Style, Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, etc.

When I got married I few years ago, the wife and told our DJ that we wanted '60s/'70s soul. Don't remember a lot of what was played, but we enjoyed it. I do remember Aretha's "Rock Steady" and Stevie's "Once in My Life" doing really well.

Without knowing your guests it's hard to give you specifics...

But a general DJing rule of thumb is playing toward the social people that'll do the work for you. (i.e. playing to the hot girls that'll get the guys on the dance floor)

Usually at weddings it ends up being the college friends. The other guests will see them having fun and want to be part of that.

so...if you're into DJing or nightlife...
or DJing AND nightlife...

Runnig jokes aside, congrats!! I'm very happy for you.

Honestly my best reccomendation is to hit up R Tistic, tell him a little about your guests and see if he'll throw you some suggestions.

Great call. I just re-fell in love with that song a couple weeks ago, had totally forgotten about it.

Another that is kind of a sneaky favorite that has worked at a couple weddings I've been to (maybe more a dinner/speeches pre-party song) is Slow Dance by John Legend. Valerie ('68 Version) by Amy works for that lowkey part of the reception too, though that's assuming your reception will be having all of that (I've been to enough weddings to know they aren't ALL in that same vein, thankfully).
