This is crazy and disturbing...
Now they are saying 60 people. I'm sure the toll will change up or down.
This is live France news in English though.

we do what we can with security, but these are the result of problems that have been brewing for a long time, and we can't just draw a line and end it today or tomorrow.

that super sad true love story showtime series might get too real though.

is a tuff situation to be up against...free societies definitely have vulnerabilities unfortunately. but from a political standpoint... leaving ppl alone to fight their own wars as they see fit and in some cases as they have been doing for centuries would probably get some results...that is controversial tho

specifically, they (we) should never have gotten involved in Syria and we should stop all bombing operations right now.

that's not a smart thing to do for a country with our colonial past and the resulting demographics. De Gaulle, despite being an old timey and most likely racist dude, was smart enough to understand that. The new generation of leaders apparently is not.

it's just way too easy for ISIL to recruit in France these days. just show a couple of videos highlighting civilian casualties in Syria, claim it was from French bombs (which it might very well be), and you're done.

not that I would renege anything I typed above, but it may turn out this guy was just a crazy fuck who happens to be named Mohammed, without political or religious motivation whatsoever.

As of now, there is no indication he was in touch with extremist groups. His only run-ins with the law were relatively minor altercations (the last one following a road rage incident). Yet and still, right-wing politicians and pundits have been pulling all types of hot takes out of their ass ('our lax judicial system is killing us by the hundreds!'). It's disgusting.

Another thing I'm reading is that he gained access to the pedestrian area by claiming he was delivering ice cream...if that is confirmed, it would be a major security fuck up.

So if the same terrorists were only killing in Muslim nations (like they have been doing and continue to do), it would be ok? It's only a problem when Europeans die? And where has it been established that immigrants did this? (if that has been established and I haven't seen it, I apologize)

I'm fully aware of that, and I agree with that...that's why I questioned his/her implication that immigrants are the problem...the overwhelming majority of the immigrants are trying to escape the violence and killing, so why blame them for it?

I should've been clearer in what I meant.

I should have said, that I could see how some Europeans views on closing off borders could start to seem like a solution. If your country is constantly being attacked, one could see this as a solution.

I don't believe that closing your borders is the answer or that Islamophobia will help. I don't blame the migrants these attacks. I do not disregard the people living in those war torn countries hardship, not do I believe a few equals all.

Again I trying to clear up, but this is the internet so who knows what you or others will try and take from what I wrote.

Mainly, As a person who has never had to deal with being in a situation like that and unsure what I could do to help. I was very upset by the almost weekly news of something terrible happening and the almost overwhelming sense of hopelessness.

If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

that a lot of people think, say or are afraid to say.

not saying you are right but it's definitely a topic that is being discussed.

I'm sure muslims who are about peace are just like Black folk when we hear about a mass shooting.. "please don't be, please don't be... gotallahdammit"

especially because thousands of refugees died escaping this kind of violence. The current European discourse and ofcourse the actions in the past is one of the reasons we have to deal with these attacks today. This really isn't an immigrant problem and I am disgusted by the way they often are treated.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

“If you had to choose a moment in time to be born, any time in human history, and you didn’t know ahead of time what nationality you were or what gender or what your economic status might be, you’d choose today,” the president said, highlighting an increase in democracies across the world, and improving global health and education standards. He cautioned, however, that this “isn’t to say that there is not still enormous suffering and enormous tragedy and so much work for us to do.”

40. "HOT TAKE! lol."

I don't think geography is much of a factor

first off, as I said above, no political/religious organization claimed the attack yet. so for all we know, it's just crazy ass Mohammed who was mad as fuck about something and decided to go on a rampage.

second, even if it ends up being a politically motivated terrorist act...it's not like he sneaked up in the country by boat or some shit. he lived in Nice, had been for years. if you want to look for root causes as to why France is a target, it's more history (colonial past) and current politics (support for US policies in the middle east, bombings in Syria, issues with integrating immigrants) than its geographic location.
