"Nintendo is bringing back the NES"

http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/14/12187296/nintendo-nes-classic-edition-announced-price-games

- connects to TV via HDMI cord
- 30 games installed (Metroid, Mario 1-3, Zelda 1-2 etc)
- $60

My major gripe is no Tetris and eventually I will want other games I cant think of. but this will be a great novelty purchase (Yes Im aware of emulators, no Im not a geek on that level

Megaman 2 was annoying, but 3 kept me going for a minute (IIRC it's the longest of the 6 NES Megaman games). I ran through 2 in a bit over a week, but 3 took me around 2 or 3 weeks to finish it mainly because you get stuck having to beat all of the MM2 bosses and having to figure out which MM3 weapons work best on them.

After MM3, the rest of them felt easy as shit.

all those MM games were hard, in general, because you needed an actual skillset to beat them. MM3 was longer, but 2 was murderous if you didn't have any sort of strategy guides to work with.

i was like 7 when Kirby's Adventure came out and it took me a year to 100% it

now i can do that shit in 45 minutes

granted those are two different games, but the point is the same. how long it takes you to beat doesn't denote difficulty.

>Folks about to have their feelings hurt remembering how hard

your reflexes are garbage now because you're over 30, game design was much more unforgiving then than it is now (still pulling a lot from quarter-munching arcade game design), there were no in-game tutorials, limited continues, complicated code input methods (castlevania, river city ransom)

folks are about to get checked HARD

>your reflexes are garbage now because you're over 30

My relaxation time involves a 5-10 game run of Robotron 2048 on MAME. I'm disappointed if I don't get to level 20 at a minimum.

My 72 year old stepfather can run you on TRON, Dig Dug, Centipede, and a whole slew of old-school arcade joints.

Y'all just stopped playing, that's why your reflexes are garbage.

Cats talkin' bout "Oh boy Ninja Gaiden!"

Ninja Gaiden will kick your ass and laugh at you.

Folks must have forgot.

These games were hard. There was no "Press X to win" or the game guiding you through it the entire time with infinite respawns. Most of the kids back then never really beat all these games.

I'd like for the younger generation to give these a shot.

From what I remember, the PS2/Xbox or PS3/Xbox 360 versions of Ninja Gaiden were pretty difficult as well.

I never beat NG Black. When I beat NG2, it was more of a "Fuck you, nigga" feeling than a sigh of relief.

Look, I've had all of my kids playing old NES games thanks to emulation from my 22 year old down to my 12 year old. They can kick it like someone that grew up with it when it was new.

Thankfully I never stopped playing. Shit, the only reason I don't have my NES, TG16, or Genesis is because I sold them to help finance our move from Detroit to PHX back in '03. Even with that, I've never stopped playing them old games.

Blaster Master, however, is the ONE game I refuse to use NES emulator save states with until the day comes that I sit down at it and run it from start to finish.

27 years playing one fuckin game and I die in almost the same spot every... fuckin... time.

I appreciate Balloon Fight though, that is a great game that could have been easily overlooked.

I never got into Kid Icarus but that's being nitpicky I guess. Clearly the game was pretty popular. Right?

i remember spending what seemed like half the summer playing that game to beat it. thumbs were worn. i think after Pit transforms into the angel or whatever it was, you can just keep playing endlessly. i never played it again.

the game's aesthetics/music were pretty fascinating for the time.

Ninja Gaiden was tuff on the NES. It wasn't the arcade game like I was hoping (what NES game WAS like its arcade counterpart???), but it was good as hell.

It was absolute ass.

I found a side-by-side comparison of Shinobi on the NES vs the Sega Master System (which is clearly the better version).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSjRNTmGHqo

The only good thing about Tengen's Shinobi is that it's one of the very few games ever released on the NES that stayed as faithful as possible to the original arcade game. In fact, I think all of Tengen's arcade ports were like that.

remove
- dr. mario
- one of the donkey kongs (they're arcade classics. never even had original console releases, sans a "greatest hits" cart, i believe.)
- tecmo bowl

add
- rc pro-am (or rad racer)
- river city ransom
- tecmo SUPER bowl

too much mario representation overall. just keep the 'super' games.

you ever get bored on double dribble and for shits and giggles jump like you're gonna dunk, but then just hold the ball for a traveling call?

yeah, there was always a nice portfolio of baseball games on the NES... RBI baseball (more cartoonish), basesball stars (saved seasons), etc.

Grab the latest version of MameUI, head over to RomHustler and download the Super Dodgeball and Salamander roms for it. (Lifeforce is Salamander renamed)

Me and my youngest daughter regularly play both games. She tried to like 'em on the NES emulator, but the arcade games are just so much better.

I still have a grip of old Nintendo games such as Tecmo Super Bowl, Ice Hockey, Blades of Steel, Super Dodge Ball, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Contra, all the Metroid/Mega Man games, etc. that I would love to play on a more reliable system - such as this one.

I'm excited to play at least a dozen or more of these games so it's obviously well worth the $60 price tag.

Here's an option: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/05/retrousbs_hdmi_nes_the_avs_is_heading_for_a_summer_release

Or go the emulator-and-ROMs route on your PC or Mac.

This seems to slant more to folks 35 & under tho, with none of the OG NES games like Kung-Fu, Pro Wrestling, and Baseball.

this is cool but most the games haven't aged well even with nostalgia.

SNES might be my fav console ever. If I can still play Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Zelda: Link to the Past, Techmo Superbowl 2 or 3 I'd be good.
