I do not give a fook.

I loved Pokemon when I was 10 and it was a great part of my childhood.

I will play casually, enjoying it when appropriate for the foreseeable future.

I think licensing and branding make a huge difference. You couldn't pay me enough to play F zero but add some Nintendo characters and I'm Mario karting for life.

It's a pretty solid business model. Take a good idea, tweak it with IP and boom. Doesn't always work because I sure as shit am one of the last people on Miitomo.

It was already pretty big in geek circles but the Pokemon angle has opened this up to a much wider audience.

My boy at work just came by cuz he saw that I had Rhyhorn, Manky, and Ekans in my office cube. Didn't talk sports like we normally do. All about Pokemon.

And I'm already mapping out my walk break to catch all the Poke stops.

Can't wait to see if there'll be any in this boring ass staff meeting later too.

I think this will be a flash because it's so dumbed down from what the current players are doing. It's even less than what the gameboy game knows.

So we'll see what direction they take it. My MIL bought me a 3Ds a couple of birthdays back I think the more you have the less you use. I now have multiple laptops, a cell phone for work one for home, galaxy tablet, iPad. Kindle fire, and multiple gaming systems.
I
Don't
Need
All
Of this
Shit

All that to say, if you got a 3ds you probably wouldn't use it. And you should hold for the app to take a next step.

I've been wanting a 3DS specifically for Pokemon but haven't cause I want a real world friend to play/trade with

So when I heard about mobile Pokemon, I was ready. Go is so popular already, it'll be interesting to see what changes they make as they go

In response to Reply # 38

If you find an empty one or you defeat a gym, you leave a pokemon to defend it and thats who other people battle. Some gyms have 3 pokemon and you have to beat them all to lower the gym's prestige level. Once its low enough, you can claim that gym for your gang.

You gotta go leave your beast at a gym, and then other people can come fight it. Or you can visit a gym and go against someone's beast. You don't actually battle that person though.

i'm glad they did it like this

its WAY easier to get into and keep up with. People who like RPGs never seem to get the bar for entry is kinda high.

with this, catching pokemon is simple and more active, the battles are quick and interactive, and i really like the team aspect. You're not really gonna get ahead alone.

I like that they took the Ingress engine and made it more accessible to people. its not even out of beta so its gonna look totally different months from now probably.

right now, I'm still at level three and I feel like I should be more into it.

A few attack options, "flee" & "item" really doesn't seem like a high bar of entry to me, so I guess I agree with you there too lol

There's a different kind of strategy involved but it wasn't that complicated

Last time I tried to play, the AR was super fun to catch the monster but then it crashed and I had other shit to do

This non battle system don't even sound that fun but I want to get to it and try it out

It doesn't really get going til Level 5, when you start bangin.

The gym battles are fun since you actually have some direct control over the Pokemon (dodging, special attacks)

If you have fun playing the game, do it.

But I was older when Pokemon was big among kids, so I don't understand it at all. And I don't quite get why this game is blowing up.

Can someone break it down for an old man?

its the closest then anything before for someone to go out an search/catch pokemon.

The cool thing is like the game/show. you catch different one based on where you are. Near water, you catch water pokemon, but also regionally. the midwest has different ones than the northeast and so on.

I use it when I walk my dog. I'm actually going to a little longer walks because of it.

If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

So, it sounds like one of the big draws is that you literally walk around your city and get different bonuses or weapons depending on where you are.

Do you battle other people who are playing? Say if I'm chillin' in a bar and another dude at the other end of the bar is playing, do we fight each other or something?

In response to Reply # 37

sometimes they just kinda pop up, but you can also track them with a very loose 'radar' system
you stop at landmarks and you get different items like pokeballs and potions, etc.

battles only happen in gyms which are other specific landmarks. When you reach level 5, you have to pick one of 3 teams to be on. If a gym is empty, you can leave a pokemon to defend it and other players have to defeat it in order to lower the gym's prestige and eventually take control of it for their team, leaving a pokemon (or 3) to defend it.

unlike the regular games, this is more about teamwork and gaining territory. This app is totally different than the normal games.

Adding Pokemon to our collection. Certain stops you see people young and old gathered together doing something. It gets them out of the house, and adds a whole new social aspect to something done on your phones. She's a big Pokemon fan that regularly plays in the trading card game competitions as well.

Hope they continue to build onto this. Better to have turf wars over this than some dumb shit.

Used it on a couple car rides (read: NOT drives) and when I woke up this morning but I don't come across much and it wrecks my battery. I can only imagine how it affects data when you're not on wifi.

Seems like another game that'll be hugely popular with folks that get sucked into what other people are doing but I stopped my social media accounts at Snapchat and don't play any of the big mobile games. I just prefer the full console experience and don't want to spend my time outdoors looking at a phone more than I already do for Facebook, Instagram and the Internet in general.

I haven't played a Pokemon game since Yellow but the whole excitement of getting the Pokemon wasn't just finding them and catching them, it was fighting them and learning their techniques and weaknesses and having to know your own stable well enough to not hurt the Pokemon too much, knowing what ball you needed to catch which Pokemon at which damage levels, etc. Maybe this game has some of that but if the fundamental challenge is to go places in real life and hope something interesting happens, I think I already do that anyway and I'm not sure I want to be stressing over my Pokemon Go character's level at the same time.

My stepson, gawd love him, has asberger's and I walked away not knowing what the hell he was talking about. Is it like a public treasure hunt? You go out in public to find things and GPS somehow tracks it?

Also....seems like people think Pokeman is somehow retro or obsolete or for 20_somethings......My 9 year old boy and his school friends are absolutely obsessed with it. Kids still loving it.

So, the fundamental gameplay loop of Pokémon proper (the original three, anyway) is that you have grown old enough to train Pokémon of your own, and after being gifted one by the town Pokémon professor you then go on a journey for him to fill out a new invention called the Pokédex which is essentially a beastiary of all the different Pokémon you capture during your journey with their stats and what not logged.

While you were walking around the world, you'd find these Pokémon by walking around in tall grass or other such 'wild' areas, battle them with the Pokémon you already owned, capture them when they were weak. Different types of Pokémon (ghost, water, fire, grass, etc.) were generally found in areas that made sense, like haunted houses or rivers or deserts. When your stable was strong enough, go over to the next town's gym and beat up on their local crew to tag the turf for yourself. Once you beat all the crew's, you were the region's Pokémon Master.

This game drops the battling for the most part, and I'm not sure how it handles gyms though it seems there's a little bit of fighting there but more in the vein of the card game than the video game.

But, all the unnecessary preamble aside, you are walking on a cartoon version of your map and the phone is tracking you and randomly popping Pokémon onto the map. You click on them and then it pulls up your camera with a crude 3D model of the Pokémon displayed on screen, so you can imagine you actually found it where you're standing in the real world. You then flick Pokéballs at it over and over because it's really unclear what makes a good throw and what doesn't and eventually you catch the Pokémon. It then gets added to your Pokédex and then you keep walking until you stumble into another one. Like the original game, types of Pokémon are roughly tied to regions, meaning people in different parts of your city are finding different types of Pokémon, adding incentive to go to parks or lakes or the other side of town or whatever. It's a really novel idea that, for me, drops the game part of the game and makes it a little hard to get into as more than a curiosity personally.

There are also hot spot locations marked as either the stores or the gyms where you can buy things (with real money or Pikachu coins) or fight things. But like I said, I can't imagine the fighting is all that much to it but I also haven't got that far yet since all the Go I've been playing is at my apartment so far. But primarily it's just walking around and catching Pokémon when they appear, and while it doesn't seem like that great of a game to me I'm happy to read the stories about obese people who are sucked into it and "accidentally" walking 6 miles a day just to catch Pokémon.

So wild ... my homey was investing in augmented reality start ups a couple years ago.. but the applications were way more serious...

like real world architectural mock ups of buildings, interior design ... military applications (landing drones on shit) etc....

but the first hit app is Pokemon...

ha!

I'm dying laughing

If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

Yeah, watched the Ingress portals a little and it was kinda cool.

If they made a Ghostbusters one, that would be pretty cool, would like catching ghosts more than pokemon imo

but doesn't matter right now, cuz I still have my Windows phone that sucks for apps, going to get a android soon tho.

Piedmont for the ATLiens. I mean people came out of nowhere and were just roaming around in groups. It was hysterical to see in real life. Then after about 15-20 mins they all disappeared
