"SchoolBoy Q - Blank Face LP"

1. Torch
2. Lord Have Mercy
3. THat Part (feat. Kanye West)
4. Groovy Tony / Eddie Kane (feat. Jadakiss)
5. Kno Ya Wrong (feat. Lance Skiiiwalker)
6. Ride Out (feat. Vince Staples)
7. Whateva U Want (feat. Candice Pillay)
8. By Any Means
9. Dope Dealer (feat. E-40)
10. John Muir
11. Big Body (feat. Tha Dogg Pound)
12. Neva Change (feat. SZA)
13. Str8 Ballin
14. Black Thoughts
15. Blank Face (feat. Anderson .Paak)
16. Overtime (feat. Miguel & Justine Skye)
17. Tookie Knows II (feat. Traffic & TF)

Q really came through with this one! This shit is hard as a ton of bricks, and Q has really matured as an artist. The instrumentation, the beat swithces, easily his best work. All the the singles have been dope, and they all work much better in the context of the album. Ride Out with Vince Staples is a monster and John Muir might be my favorite track so far. Not without some flaws, Kanye tries to Ruin That Part just like he tried to ruin Chance's "All We Got," I wasn't feeling the track with the Dogg Pound too much (not that bad, just out of place), and that Justine Sky feature on Overtime was unnecessary (the song is definitely a better version of Studio other than that). But over all this is a remarkable project. Definitely a contender for rap album of the year.

With the right cuts, it could be a 5 star album. But even with the length, it doesn't feel like it drags too much unlike say... Views.

this shit, even with its (at times) problematic aspects of hood blackness, is giving me life

i think outside of "ride out" (which should've closed the LP), and the first half of "know You Wrong" all the best songs were released as videos, which does nothing to take away from how good it is. ohh the wrong rapper got featured on "Groovy Tony", we all know it should've been...

only ones I'd cut are "whateva U want", "Str8 Ballin", and MAYBE "Big Body" (interestingly enough produced by Tyler)... even thought I understand Q was just trying to switch up the tone here and now for an album as insular and guttural as this, but Q always been poetic and raw and he should know, 4 albums deep, that's enough

"Dope Dealer" with 40 gunna have me acting a damn fool in my whip. And again, a Swizz feature/production in post 2010 will always be gold as "lord Have Mercy" proves

the production is contemporary, while pulling from the best of Wu-y eastcoast tradition, and traditional 90s west coast slap

i think i like it better than Malibu right now, which is ironic since Paak's voice murmurs throughout the whole album

i still have Habits & Contradictions as Q's best, but this may be his masterpiece and 2016's top 5

Lyrics are elementary

Flow is disjointed

Vocal inflections are awkward for the sake of being awkward

Content is unoriginal and uninspired

There's literally nothing good about it.

The next few listens deaden my interest in his verse tho

To be honest I never listened to E 40, so theres that.

But I think Jada stole alot of shine

Its typical Jada but the production for a backdrop

to his vocal tone and sinister bars is over the top for me.

If I were to describe some 'blank face' rap before hearing

this album, this would be eons past what I could dream up

I felt like his previous album was torn in too many directions. whole thing sounded fractured with the crossover attempts and street stuff.

this time he built on his sound from H&C and refined it. his best work yet.

I remember on break the bank this guy was talking about taking Kendrick's crown and people lol'ing. If this shit don't push Kendrick to a new level, he ain't the mc I thought he was.Q's feel for a chorus and flow is devastating. He has all the parts to pull it off as shown by this album. Know ya wrong, never change, lord have mercy. I'm calling it classic right now, don't sleep, this album is significant even if it is repetitive. Like a lot of classic rock albums aren't, but I could swear he understands that on some level. This should be problematic for most top tier rappers. Best throwaway line: on big body he says keep your traps in the south. This shit makes me want to visit Cali yo. The best west coast rap is like a commercial.

maybe not content wise, but I might prefer his flow to Kendrick's. He writes great hooks. This is a strong album all the way through. Probably more accessible than TPAB, I love both albums. I'm happy to see young people making music that isn't disposable. Oxymoron was pretty solid but this is much better in my opinion. I am now a fan.

i wouldn't call blankface particularly accessible either but definitely more so than TPAB. I like Kendrick more but this dude deserves more shine imo.

It's not surprising that it's dope, cause Tyler is a damn good producer, it's the type of sound imo

I'm more surprised at how many of yall LOVE it.

It's one of the weakest songs on the LP imo

So I won't argue with you lol. but nah it's not weak at all.

#1, I love breakbeats, I'm a sucker for all that shit. The little chime they got in there like how 45 King has on his "Hard Damage" beat (you can't look it up on youtube unfortunately since the record label owner is a litigious fuck). Also it's a little faster and carefree like Suga Free 'Playas Gangstas' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMY-9ClT0-c which is one of my favorites.

Basically it's simultaneously old school sounding and upbeat, a break from the more serious content on the album.

The breakdown with the 808's, the drums and whatever chime sound he got on there, and the speed is all studied from a bygone era, so I credit Tyler for contributing something where he clearly was influenced by older stuff.

I'm two weeks in and don't see this coming out any of my players any time soon

in some order, my favs::

all these songs are @@@@@ IMO:
-Tookie Knows II - my favorite and dude who goes second has my favorite verse on the song.
-Black Thoughts - best song on the album: the gang culture introspection deserves a lot of love and that beat, 'notic
-Groovy Tony / Eddie Kane
-Dope Dealer (feat. E-40) - iTunes tells me this the song I've played the most
-By Any Means - the coldest. the hook
-THat Part - fuck all that noise ppl talkin'. this hook is great/catchy and Ye's verse is so damn hilarisad and memorable
-Lord Have Mercy
-Kno Ya Wrong - the Sa-Ra influenced space-funk of the second half is something I never would've thought Q would rock over b4 this album
-Neva Change - this beat is MUAH
-Ride Out - prob the hardest shit on the album
-Torch
*those ten songs are a classic album alone

@@@@:
John Muir

@@@1/2:
Overtime - dope, just so different from the rest of the LP. has that "this is the single" vibe.

@@@:
Big Body - the non-signing part of the hook is ehh and Tha Dogg Pound bring the song down
Blank Face - wish it had drums

the weakest links:
Whateva U Want - funny thing is when this song comes on I jig a lil' but then quickly get annoyed bored with it. should've been cut
Str8 Ballin - sorry sounds like Setback's era Q

and i'm far less impressed than i expected to be...

i'm hoping this grows on me like I expected Oxymoron to grow on me (which didn't at all...never made it to 5 listens)

Habits & Contradictions is still my shit if only for 2 tracks that will forever be dope to me...

i'm gonna definitely give this a few more listens but i'm definitely hitting the snooze button on a lot of the hype my like-minded brethren have been putting out

My last favorite song of all time was Blank Face and before that, By Any Means.

So many standout cuts on this.

I might actually be obsessed with this record. It's occupied the vast majority of my music listening since its release.
