Man... wtf
Ok, people told me I couldn't judge the show until I watched it (I'd previously only read a couple articles and seen a few scenes), and now that I've watched it, I think even worse of it than I did before lol.
Some of the stuff I expected. I was told that the only decent character on the show was the gay guy. That's pretty much true. EVERYBODY on the show is a villian/victimizer. Wtf? I can't think of a show I've ever seen like that. An interesting tidbit here tho, is that Lee Daniels is gay, so perhaps that's just him giving us some insight into his moral superiority complex. Maybe he feels like everybody around him is fucked up, but he isn't (the scene where Jamal was thrown in the garbage, allegedly happened to Daniels as well). The only time Jamal did something crazy is when he was being pressured by his pops. He's always the victim from the beginning of the 1st season to the end of the 2nd.
The really crazy thing about the plot line is that there's never a moment without a dramatic occurrence (especially in the 2nd season, my god). It's over-stimulation on the level of video games to a 10 yr old. It got to a point where every.single. scene found somebody losing it, somebody getting shot, somebody just doing something super evil. It was just plain cartoonish. Considering this, I see why alotta people find the show addictive. Just like that 10 yr old playing video games, after so much of that, you don't wanna do anything else... don't wanna go outside, don't wanna converse face to face, because nothing can compete with that level of stimulation. I can see fans of that show not wanting to watch anything else, due to not having patience to wait on a story to build. God forbid trying to read a book.
Beginning of season 2, we know Lucious is guilty as shit, but they use Black activism to ride for him... sending the message that niggas really be guilty. Very irresponsible to use a protest of mass incarceration of Black males to defend a character like Lucious. I know they show is full of villains, but that shit crossed over into real life, and I wasn't feeling that. Don't touch current issues if that's how you're gonna do it. But hey... white supremacist-approved TV.
The only lasting relationship on there is, of course, the interracial one. I already know one of the rules of white supremacist TV is to never show a lasting, healthy Black relationship and all, but they were all kinds of overboard with the kissing between these two. They're married, so I expect affection, but in the beginning of the first season it's like they were kissing every time they were shown or she was kneeling to go down on him. It just seemed excessive to the point of being corny.
Speaking of that, the non-Black mates brought into the show always got caught up in any evil due to their involvement with a Black character. Wife hit dude over the head and killed him for Dre (accident). Lesbian chick took over the business for her Black gf. Hakeem's lil mexican fiance was just this angelic girl who ultimately refused to be involved with these Black thugs.
Speaking of Hakeem, I couldn't take this nigga's character serious worth a damn. His raps suck, and he's not a good actor. He didn't have the screen presence for me to believe that the characters in the show even took him seriously as the CEO of the company. That shit was some of the most unbelievable TV I've ever seen.
The 2 things I actually liked about the show: The music. Season 2 they finally show some background on Lucious and how he came to be the straight up monster he is.
Overall tho? Shit just look like more propaganda to me on many levels.
