"People who cant put their phone down long enough to handle simple tasks"

Like make a purchase at the register, back out of a parking space, make a bank transaction, ect.
Is it irrational to be really bothered by them ?

It's not irrational, either. I've started looking at people that can't put their phone away in public as losers. Nerdy dudes used to get ROASTED for being on the computer or playing video games a lot pre-smartphones.

You go into bars and it will be a bunch of people not talking but on their phones.

Manners in general go to shit because people are weirded out by having to talk to people.

Folks having no attention span. It will be turrible.

anyway, i remember a friend in Philly who was one the first in the city with a smartphone with a color screen.

he loved that phone and used to pull it out at the bar while we were all chopping it up having a good time.

he used to pull chicks with it tho cause it was all colorful and flashy...

but we also peeped how anytime there was a lull in the action hw would pull out that damn phone and we would scream on him...lol.

I cant front, I'm guilty of doing this but i also realized when i dont do it while out i usually end up having dope convos with random people.

its a sad coping mechanism imo.

People born in the 2000s?

You ever work with a millennials? I've got to beg the one that I work with to pick up the phone or go talk to people face to face as oppose to sending a cold email.

And it's not people being nicer back in the day. Folks are different based on the different environments they grew up in. Technology included.

Sometimes you let your impulse to snark get ahead of your rationale thinking. SMH.

i thought your post was about people interacting and having casual conversation vs sitting next to someone and never looking up from the phone.

remember when we used to be excited to answer the phone? nowadays folks dread when it rings half the time.

look back on and hopefully own.

saw a 20-something-year-old mother the other day at the car wash. had a beautiful toddler-aged daughter. daughter wanted to play with mom.

daughter kept looking up at mom.

mom wasn't paying attention.

mom's phone was more important.

scroll. scroll. scroll.

if millennials need social media for likes and self-validation to combat attachment issues, then god bless this next generation. i can only imagine.

i've dated a couple women with daddy issues. admitted that they were neglected during childhood/adolescence and consequently chased and got involved with emotionally-unavailable guys in adulthood.

and that was *before* technology blew up.

For the first few weeks I had to constantly remind them to put it away until it became routine, but during that time I remember being so frustrated with students scrolling through real quick or taking selfies in my class.

However, during faculty meetings, some of my coworkers have their cell phones out too.

I definitely don't think it'll get worse and in talking with some students they talk about the same issues brought up here. They're well aware that cell phones are a distraction and they even bring up how rude it is when their friends pull out when in their company. So, with that being said, I have faith that their self-awareness will increase and that 20 years from now the bar scenario that was brought up won't come to fruition. Perhaps it's more the adults that we need to worry about?

Here's a TED talk from Sherry Turkle called Alone Together that I've been playing for students.

because that's what they do.

Snapchat is an adjustment to having digital cameras with basically infinite storage space. No one needs to keep pictures anymore, which old people don't understand because we place too much value on picture
