if they leave, similar to Donnie T. winning the election.

This is where I wish I could pop into an alternative universe, laugh at the misery they voted themselves into, then pop back into my universe where Obama's on his 4th term, Repubs died in a freak fire, and the liberal democrats run shit in the uk

Yep.

I like counterfactual alternate history like '"What if the South Won the Civil War". BTW-Some scholars that a south victory was possible had they fought a guerilla war Viet-Cong style.

I'm not a fan of Brexit, Trump or the Confederacy but speculating about that stuff is fun.

In response to Reply # 0

Only a very very small portion of the results have been tallied, which seems to be misleading. Google is stating this when I enter just "Brexit":

3.4% Reporting

Votes
Remain a member of the European Union
49.2%
452,480

Leave the European Union
50.8%
467,017

The map at the bottom of this link - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/23/eu-referendum-will-it-be-brexit-exit-poll-and-results-live/ - shows geographically the tallies and how the media might be jumping the gun. But who knows.

i'm a bear... and currently long S&P and small-cap index put options, so i hope the referendum passes for purposes of my own book.

S&P futures were down 2% (!!) an hour ago when the early results signaled "leave".

GBP/USD nosedive was jaw-dropping. asian markets volatile as shit right now with wild ass swings.

i don't think metro london's results are in, which will favor the "remain" camp.

edit: global markets already priced in "remain" (see: the week-long rally) so look out below if it isn't.

Or so I hear.

The expectation is that the leave vote will accelerate over the night.

I wish I had better sources (I'm mostly getting my info from facebook friends), but my understanding is that the demographic modelling is looking really bad at this point.

Hopefully someone more up on it will correct me if I'm wrong, but the story I've gotten is that he was cravenly trying to get support from UKIP in the last general election, so he promised a referendum on the matter even though he opposed it. Back then the idea of Britain voting to leave the EU was a crazy as, well, America electing Donald Trump to the presidency. So it didn't seem so dangerous at the time.

This is part of why everyone's saying Cameron will be forced to resign if the vote is to leave. That's the silver lining, at least until we see the piece of shit the Tories put up next.

hopefully making out with mila kunis!

haha, nah... hopefully he's net/net short.

i mean, the federal reserve and other central banks have been deflating currencies and creating an asset BUBBLE via equity markets for the last 7 years, as a result quantitative easing and low interest rates.

ironic that the UK actually got responsible and stopped this bullshit in 2012 yet here we are seeing the pound fall into the abyss.

bottom line is that none of these global keynesian programs have created real economic growth for the masses.

i plan on covering most of my short positions in the morning on the open, and seeing how the day plays out. i can't imagine the majority of people will be want to be long equities into the weekend.

the UK's standoffishness regarding the EU as always been tolerated by the other European countries, but with this campaign I've heard more and more basically saying "good ridance". Europe is already messed up with total disunion over the refugee crisis and now this? I'm still in dismay at what Cameron was trying to do exactly

a couple months ago I heard a journalist lay out this scenario in a podcast about the Brexit:

Jun '16: Brexit
Nov '16: Trump elected
May '17: France elects Marine le Pen
Oc '17: Merkel loses, AfD is part of a governing coalition

All of these have varying odds (Germany is the least likely IMO) but if they all happen we're looking at a nightmare I'd rather not think about

youth pro-eu margin was polling better than hillary's latino margin over trump earlier this week.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/22/eu-referendum-which-type-of-person-wants-to-leave-and-who-will-b/

millenial population in the u.k. is almost exactly the same as the 60+ population, and you can bet those old folks cast their votes.

youth turnout being absolutely shit is what led to the disasters in 2010 and 2014 here.

hillary isn't a slam dunk if young people in swing states don't show up for her, and frankly hillary winning alone isn't enough. supreme court and gun debates this week should prove that.

One the current result is 52 to 48 percent which essentially is half of people voting one way the other half the other.

More importantly mouse over this map http://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2016/jun/23/eu-referendum-live-results-and-analysis

If you know any places in the UK you'll find they voted remain it tended to be the countryside which voted leave whilst the cities voted stay. Very split country (regionally) now

living in colonial nostalgia. it aint just the old fuckers either, and you notice it AS SOON as you exit London.

on the low, i'm amused that everyone started losing it now that anti-immigration is hitting other white euros. meanwhile black and brown folks who've been here for generations still treated like shit by brits and euros alike. these people think their right to freedom of travel/movement is an inherent right to which they're entitled, guess what? it aint, and this is what it's like to have that privilege revoked.

83. "The Bradley Effect"
In response to Reply # 63

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect

The Bradley effect (less commonly the Wilder effect) is a theory concerning observed discrepancies between voter opinion polls and election outcomes in some United States government elections where a white candidate and a non-white candidate run against each other. The theory proposes that some voters who intend to vote for the white candidate would nonetheless tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for the non-white candidate. It was named after Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor's race despite being ahead in voter polls going into the elections.

The Bradley effect posits that the inaccurate polls were skewed by the phenomenon of social desirability bias. Specifically, some white voters give inaccurate polling responses for fear that, by stating their true preference, they will open themselves to criticism of racial motivation. Members of the public may feel under pressure to provide an answer that is deemed to be more publicly acceptable, or 'politically correct'. The reluctance to give accurate polling answers has sometimes extended to post-election exit polls as well. The race of the pollster conducting the interview may factor into voters' answers.

We should all understand and expect these things, and build what we know from history and from the laws of society we already have into how we structure our institutions.

Of course it may be argued that this is a fairly bleak view of life. It means, for instance, that we can stand in a room of dear friends, knowing that nine tenths of them, if the pack demands it, will become your enemies.'

I was so sure the Remain vote was safe, I can't believe this. So many working class liberal people falling for right wing maniac propaganda, it's mind boggling. I've always supported democracy as the best way to go for everything but now... I don't know man.

I'm in Scotland & at least every one of our constituencies voted to Remain with 62% for the country overall. Obviously this will stoke up the Independence debate again (which I voted Yes for) but I really don't know if the result would be different with another vote. Would this change enough people's minds? As for currency we would now use anything BUT the £ lol.

Today has been the most depressing day in the most depressing year I can ever remember. I haven't even been able to be happy about Cameron resigning & that is something I never thought I could say.

62% is pretty conclusive & it would be entirely unfair to be dragged out against our will. I have seen a few things online about people who voted No would now back Yes but I don't have my hopes up just yet. Also as much as I'd like it to happen I wouldn't want to scrape a win with only 51-52%, that doesn't feel right at all for something that will permanently change people's lives. A lot of SNP supporters I know actually voted Leave, even my family, & I just bit my tongue to avoid arguments because I was so sure the result was safe. At one point early yesterday the bookies had Remain at 1/10 & Leave at 7/1, they could never get it that wrong I thought, we were safe I thought. Ha.

As for Ireland that can only get ugly whatever happens. Hard to see anything positive will come from this.

to be honest, its *this* that i am worried about
the ones who are like, we dont like trump, but never hillary
or, well, im in a blue state, my vote doesnt matter anyway
or...

if the elections in nov are won by trump
because the majority of this country is composed of nativists, ideologues and, well bigots
then ok, thats a real wake up call
but if the election is lost because of grandstanding and the need to 'make a stand'
then thats something else altogether

im just waiting to see what % of this country is bigotted
im hoping its not the majority
but its certainly the proportion that will vote the donald

my candidate doesnt win so to hell with the party

and this being the key difference with the republicans
they reshape their party to fit in with their ideology
(for better or worse)

we let our politicans shape the party and then it turns out not to our liking
or when we are dissatisfied, its to hell with the party

its such personality politics.

and i think this is supposed to be the grown up party

I voted democrat in 1 mayoral race...

Beyond that I've always voted green party or libertarian. I didn't even vote for Obama the second time around.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I'm not a democrat, and I only support their politicians in the sense that I disagree with them less frequently than I do with republicans, but I've never considered myself a democrat.

and i apologize for that, i did assume you were a democrat
because what i wrote is what we do
and i think its shameful

btw, how can you be a libertarian and green party'ist at the same time?
these sound like polar opposites

In response to Reply # 152

Libertarians and Greens are generally pretty socially liberal (I mean actual libertarians, not republicans in libertarian clothing) and both disagree with concentrations of power, be it from big business or big government.

Now the greens obviously want to increase the social safety net, but I'm more concerned with corporate influence on the government and vice versa. The Green party platform even includes a section about trying to lower the restrictions and paperwork on small businessmen.

My problem with capitalism isn't that there are too many capitalists, it's that there are too few by far. Both of those parties are against corporatism, and I can get behind that.

Edit: Also I like that the green party talks about homesteading. As a distributist I think more land needs to be opened up for individuals and families to own and create new communities.

In response to Reply # 0

We're headed for another recession as voters elect candidates that push for austerity. Irony is austerity screws over these same people and cripples economies.

I'm looking at real estate in Canada because fuck another recession. The lost human capital from another recession cripples the USA for at least a decade.

u.s. hasn't done anything that stupid since 2003/4. though, as you said, we're close to doing something similar this fall.

if the bbc wasn't reporting that a large number of people
don't seem to know wtf they were voting for
or wtf the EU is and its benefits for the country
they thought they were keeping away immigrants
(despite not knowing the overwhelming contribution immigrants have made to the british economy
and this is the country of empire- shit their colonialist outposts built that economy)
i would also be okay if this vote was based on a rational discussion about the future of the U.K
and the fact that free movement of labour, education, finance has not hurt the U.K
instead there was a repudiation of 'expert opinion' (by one of the leaders, no less)
there was the lies that money would be available for the NHS (they just walked back from this)
and that magically jobs would return
this vote was basically about blaming immigrants for the issues in the country
it sounds like this was a vote by ill-informed voters
i think ill-informed voters (regardless of whether they are conservative or liberals)
are dangerous to society.
i mean they were using the same 'liberal elites' language we hear in this country
as though being educated is not a bad thing.

geez

Strengthening the position of far right movements who have been calling for their countries exits as well, as well as possibly triggering the fracturing of the EU as a whole.
Yesterday I would have called this alarmist but I'm not so sure any more.
Also the EU will drive a very hard bargain with the U.K. to make a point to members who consider leaving.Doubtful the UK would get a business as usual deal.

The idea that they were pumping out that by the sheer power of the pound the UK would etch out these magical agreements because they are fucking awesome understates the fact that

1)The deal can't be favorable or else that's effectively the end of the EU (cause everyone is gonna want a piece)
2)They are dealing with two other economic powerhouses in Germany and France.

Basically being one of the big leaders in the Euro gang (bang bang) netted them a certain amount of power within the EU and externally as one of the main heads of the dragon...now going solo...

Long term I am sure that their economy will do fine. But it seems they are giving up alot in the short term for what? The same deals they had before but a bit worse?

Nearly every market move over the last two weeks has been attributed to the British referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain with or leave the European Union.

A poll showed Brits might want to leave? Down go stocks . Then it looked like the U.K. would stay in the political and economic bloc? Here's 200 points to the upside for the Dow Jones industrial average.

Now that the U.K. has officially voted in favor of leaving, markets are going wild . The Dow shed 500 points right out of the gate, before paring some of those losses. The British pound also posted its largest one-day fall ever, before recovering slightly.

And it's not just trading desks who cared about Thursday's referendum. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said earlier this month that a British exit from the EU "could have consequences in turn for the U.S. economic outlook."

British citizens voted on the question, "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

Polls closed at 10 p.m. London-time (5 p.m. Eastern), and then the official results were called about 9 hours later.

Now that the leave camp has won, the process of a British exit from the EU will begin, but some estimates say the negotiations could take more than two years.

If Brits had voted to stay, then markets would have been free to breath a sigh of relief.

(According to the BBC, eligible voters were "British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens over 18 who are resident in the U.K., along with U.K. nationals living abroad who have been on the electoral register in the U.K. in the past 15 years. Members of the House of Lords and Commonwealth citizens in Gibraltar (would) also be eligible, unlike in a general election.")

As could be expected, the primary stance of EU politicians was that the U.K. should stay within the bloc, but nations and expert groups across the world also expressed their preference for a stay victory.

Important British trading partners — including India and China — indicated they were worried that an exit would create regulatory and political volatility that could harm the economies of everyone involved.

The U.K.'s Treasury itself reported that its analysis showed the nation "would be permanently poorer" if it left the EU and adopted any of a number of likely alternatives. "Productivity and GDP per person would be lower in all these alternative scenarios, as the costs would substantially outweigh any potential benefit of leaving the EU," a summary of the report said.

As the overall economy weakens, the British government would see weaker tax receipts than otherwise, and those losses would vastly outweigh the benefits of reduced contributions to the EU, according to the analysis.

The Bank of England , the International Monetary Fund , and others have warned of the long-term negative effects of a British exit.

And although some have dismissed those analyses as "rotten propaganda," most mainstream economists overwhelming agreed the move would be bad for the U.K.

Yeah, so, this is where it gets a tad more complicated. The general thinking is that many international corporations, notably those based in the U.S. and China, invest in U.K. operations partly so they can readily access the free-trade corridors the U.K. enjoys with the rest of the European Union. So since the leave camp won, many of those companies could see drastically reduced profits.

The sudden need to reset tons of global investment channels — against the background of the ambiguous and extended period of the U.K.'s exit negotiations — could have a freezing effect on the whole region.

"Negotiations on post-exit arrangements would likely be protracted, resulting in an extended period of heightened uncertainty that could weigh heavily on confidence and investment, all the while increasing financial market volatility," the IMF said in an April report. "A U.K. exit from Europe's single market would also likely disrupt and reduce mutual trade and financial flows, curtailing key benefits from economic cooperation and integration, such as those resulting from economies of scale and efficient specialization."

Depending on how you measure it, the EU as a whole ranges from the first to the third largest economy in the world. And in terms of trade, the bloc easily topped the U.S. and China in both imports and exports.

So a slowdown there would mean a global slowdown. One that could last months — if not years.

Yeah, it does sound hyperbolic, but there are actually a couple arguments for why a British exit may hurt the rest of the globe.

In Europe, the EU could run into economic trouble for a couple of reasons. The lengthy and as-yet ambiguous exit negotiations could cripple investment, as mentioned above, but they could also lead to more exits. Nationalist groups across Europe will be watching the referendum closely to see if they can use the results into their advantage.

Elsewhere, the economic risks are best understood as a function of uncertainty. EU uncertainty: If financiers and companies are concerned that they may get cut out of free-trade channels, they may find safer (which is to say, less productive) uses for their money. And British uncertainty: All those billions of dollars already invested in the U.K. and invested abroad by British entities could be in limbo as London rushes to negotiate new non-EU trade deals with key partners.

In the U.S., billions, if not trillions, of dollars could be called into question by a British exit: In 2014, American direct investment into the EU totaled about 1.81 trillion euros, and about 1.99 trillion euros flowed in the opposite direction, according to the European Commission.

If even a small percentage of that is disrupted, it could reverberate across the globe.

Similar concerns apply for Chinese, Indian, Japanese and other international companies and investors.

With all of that uncertainty rushing around, a British exit will likely result in a massive rebalancing of currencies.

Investors will (and have already begun to) dive out of the British pound and into cash that's perceived as safe — the Swiss franc, the Japanese yen, the U.S. dollar. The euro could also see some weakening if investors are worried about the fate of the EU.

While being a safe haven could sound like a boon for the U.S. economy, such a large, sudden currency swing could have significant negative implications for American multinational corporations.

The fallout from those currency moves could be another source of short- and medium-term economic tumult.

Most experts laid out arguments like the ones above in explaining why the U.K. should vote to stay in the European Union. But there are many reasons why Brits voted

First and foremost, a lot of people simply didn't care about the multinational corporations and investors who would likely bear the immediate losses of a vote to leave — not to mention the fact that "expert" predictions are increasingly unpersuasive to voters.

And for many, concerns about the costs of continued EU membership far outweighed any worries about leaving.

One of the major sticking points in the conversation has been immigration concerns, as some Brits worry that the country's employment market and social services will drown under the weight of too many new residents. There's also the worry that upper-crust elites and Brussels bureaucrats are pushing for a continental identity that diminishes the U.K.'s own sense of self.

There were also economic arguments, although they were more often made by pro-exit politicians than by professional economists. Those politicians argued that the EU's strong regulatory regime and its required contributions actually depress the U.K.'s growth potential.

and then there's the part about obama's federal reserve being out of ammunition --- keynesian economics (QE/bond purchases/zero interest rates) have created a massive asset bubble.

Basically ignore this and don't invoke article 50 to leave the EU.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/23/world/europe/brexit-consequences.html?_r=0

Instead, the process of decoupling would officially begin only when the British government chooses to invoke a previously unused provision of the bloc’s governing treaty, known as Article 50, that sets out the basics of the withdrawal process.

The most critical element of Article 50 is that, once invoked, it sets a two-year deadline for a negotiated departure. Beyond that, no one really knows how the process would work, since no country has ever left the European Union.

Moreover, it is up to the British government when to invoke Article 50, and it is not entirely clear whether Prime Minister David Cameron, who has led the campaign to stay, would stick to his stated plan to invoke it immediately if the country votes to leave.

In legal terms, the British government is not even bound by the result of Thursday’s referendum, which is generally considered a tossup at this point. In a report for the Constitution Society, Richard Gordon and Rowena Moffat said, “The government could, in strict law, choose to ignore it.”

Most members of Parliament — including the majority of the governing Conservatives in the House of Commons and nearly all of the opposition Labour Party — are also opposed to leaving the bloc, though Parliament would probably not get a direct vote on whether or when to invoke Article 50.

Do you remember the debt ceiling situations? tl;dr is the US had to vote to raise the debt ceiling. Republicans held up the process by demanding legislative gains from the President. The President naturally refused to cave in and sensible voices reigned in the crazies within the Republican party avoiding global disaster.

What you're describing is THE PEOPLE voting Obama into office but the folks that cast the electoral college votes decide to cast the vote the way THEY want to and McCain/Romney becomes POTUS.

That's going against the will of the people.

And you know RWN luuuuuuv the fact that the govt was shut down and they wish that more shut downs would occur.
They actually praise Ted Cruz for doing that.
Cruz has done nothing else during his time in the senate but read that dr seuss book for all them hours and them RWN love him for it

I'm not proud of them because their if their decision stands it fucks over the entire world long-term. It's weird seeing so many people regret this decision so soon after it happened. What happened to all that dick slinging WE BRITAIN, EAT IT WORLD shit they were talking earlier? I hope cooler heads prevail and they stop the damage before it gets worse.

They need to get the vaseline ready because they are going to get fucked by everyone. US and China are first in line after the EU proper.

Why?
For exercising their rights as a sovereign nation?
Why should Britain choose things for their country that affect people in South Central Los Angeles?

Why are people acting like Britain is Anguilla and has not been on its own for over 1,000 years before this EU experiment?
Britain knows how to live alone and will be just fine.

You think Hillary going to play hardball with UK just because of BRexit?
You know Trump won't.
Neither will a shit load of other countries not in the EU because why???

In response to Reply # 147

but the mainstream parties and our prime minister (the Brexit referendum was at least partly David Cameron's idea) will probably either stop it from happening or just ignore the results (a legally binding referendum is very unlikely). As stupid an idea as the Brexit is, the UK at least have some economic power by themselves. The Netherlands are completely entangled with Germany and the rest of the EU, getting out would be economic suicide and I think most people here realize that.

Then again, there's plenty of ill informed, disgruntled and/or racist voters here as well, and the Brexit came as a bit of a surprise (even for many who voted for it, lol), so don't quote me on this..

Specifically, the corporations that have threatened to leave London to remain in the EU would be most likely to move to Amsterdam (and Frankfurt). No point in doing that if the Netherlands pulls out too.

In response to Reply # 171

There's probably other sectors that'll become tougher for UK companies to operate in. My friends have a film/tv production company in Amsterdam that can probably swoop in where UK companies have to retreat.
It's a question of whether the spoils of this breakup will be enough to compensate for the economic damage the Brexit has wrought, but I'm not directly worried for the economy here. I am a bit terrified for the future of Europe, though.

The fact that David Cameron resigned. Like fuh real. I can't even imagine an American politician actually honoring the shit that they say like that without an incredible amount of pressure from below or just a little pressure from a large corporation or whatnot.

At least, that's what I'm reading. Sounds like a monumentally stupid move, crippling your own party right when your political rivals are busy trying to mend the rift in theirs. Wasted opportunity. But that's basically the catchphrase of left-of-center politics in Europe these days.

Is the UK obligated to respect secession?
wingnuts in Alaska and Texas been trying to leave the union, but according to what I've read, that shit's illegal. Like even if it made it to a vote and won, the fed would never allow it.

I was in high school when the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia broke up, never thought I'd see something like that again
