He financed Hulk Hogan's defence. He is a hardcore libertarian who was fighting identity politics while at Stanford and he has a law background. There is a very long article on him in the New Yorker and he comes across as fuzzy and loveable (not). He was born in Germany and came to the US as a child. When you have people like that founding companies that become huge succes and then hiring people, now you understand why is there is a dearth of black people in tech companies.

Gawker outs the CEO years ago, he vows revenge. Gawker puts out Hogan sex tape. Hogan sues. CEO makes deal with Hogan to help fund the lawsuit with mega-attorneys and they make it so it case can't be settled by gawkers insurance (which can handle certain kinda of punitive damage and keep the company afloat), the CEO wanted them out of the paint completely.
Rather than simply play the vigilante, available to help those who have been publicly attacked by a company even the most ardent press advocates must hold their noses to defend, Thiel secretly declared a multi-front war against Gawker, seeking to crush it by any means necessary.
Specifically, while Gawker has found itself defending numerous Thiel-backed lawsuits attacking its kind of journalism, there has also been an orchestrated effort to initiate a class-action labor suit against it. Some in the Los Angeles legal community talk openly about a coordinated strategy against Gawker. And at least one Silicon Valley billionaire has quietly pursued the concept of a Gawker buyout by indirectly reaching out to former staffers.
Thiel’s level of involvement in each of these initiatives remains opaque. What isn’t: the impact of this attack on Gawker. The $140 million judgment, which isn’t covered by insurance, could prove fatal to the company if it’s upheld–and could serve as a blueprint for any billionaire who wants to lay siege against a media outlet.

Deadspin, Kotaku, to a certain extent Jezebel and i09 and I can't see what harm Jalopnik poses to anyone... they have their dark, shady dealings but I really enjoy their aesthetic and the way they cover the reporting of other, more reputable news sources. I'm sure there are other sites that attempt to both break news and, for lack of a better term, attempt to be ombudsman for the rest of the news, but I find the way Gawker does it to be really appealing.
Except when it's not. They should have never published the video of Hogan, the transcripts were enough and they had the video to prove it was accurate behind closed doors should anyone come knocking. The world didn't need to see that; I still haven't.

How long does it take to upload a video and write some crap commentary? About 20 minutes? Gawker's business shouldn't be ruined for 20 minutes of action.
