If that ain't some victim blaming. SMH.

They should tack on more time just because of that letter. Not once mention the victim. Never ever showing any remorse or responsibility for their actions. Pretty awful.

I don’t think the whole “20 minutes of action” bit was written in the sense of “getting some action” though, but in generic terms of his actions. It’s still an alarmingly tone deaf statement, particularly within context of the rest of the letter.

The light sentence due to the long term impact on his life is highly disturbing, since that exact argument can be made with literally every rape.

Yeah, no shit. Talk about white privilege. Dude gets kid gloves so as to mitigate the fucking consequences of his actions.
I wonder if there’s a way for the victim to request a new review hearing in a different court or something because this is downright absurd.

Aside from the use of the word 'action'.....this shit is just so outrageously offensive to say. We could say that the Sandy Hook shooter shouldn't pay the consequences for the rest of his life 'for 20 minutes of action' too. What kind of logic is that?

But I am deeply moved by her letter and would recommend everyone to read it. She is incredibly articulate and focused. And she's absolutely right. You can tell that she has spent alot of time in counselling and with loved ones to contextualize what happened and articulately express her feelings and experience.

Here's a direct link to her letter. It's definitely worth a read:

Wow.

Unfortunately, I am not as forgiving as some. I want the absolute worst things to come to that dude as long as he's walking around pretending he didn't do what he reasonably clearly did. I care not about his current losses. Raping someone is just about the most lame thing a dude can do to hurt a woman and I'm just not with it at all. I'd feel much better if his parents would've given him the business about it instead of going on the defensive to try to 'save' him. I have mean things to say about all of it. Most of it revolves around my thoughts about how lack of accountability can ruin just about anything or anyone. But I'ma chill before I type something too crazy about this dude, his folks, and folks like them...

There's a lot of uncertainty until we know specifically what issue he's appealing and on what grounds. He could be challenging the conviction or he could be challenging the sentence. Or he could be challenging a ton of other rulings the judge made during the course of the trial.

He can ask the judge to overturn the jury's verdict and enter a verdict of not guilty. He could ask for a mistrial and seek a new trial. Or he could ask for a reduction of that pitiful-ass sentence the judge gave him.

http://nymag.com/thecut/2016/06/brock-turners-friend-pens-letter-of-support.html#

A source also provided the Cut with a letter from Turner’s childhood friend Leslie Rasmussen to Judge Persky. In it, she includes a photo of Turner smiling and says there’s no way Brock could ever be a rapist, because “he was always the sweetest to everyone,” going so far as to call “the whole thing a huge misunderstanding.”

She blames accusations of campus rape on political correctness, writing:

I don’t think it’s fair to base the fate of the next ten + years of his life on the decision of a girl who doesn’t remember anything but the amount she drank to press charges against him. I am not blaming her directly for this, because that isn’t right. But where do we draw the line and stop worrying about being politically correct every second of the day and see that rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists.

Rasmussen also says that alcohol-fueled sexual assaults perpetrated by young college students are not the same as when a woman is abducted and assaulted:

This is completely different from a woman getting kidnapped and raped as she is walking to her car in a parking lot. That is a rapist. These are not rapists. These are idiot boys and girls having too much to drink and not being aware of their surroundings and having clouded judgement.

Aside from the "political correctness" angle she chose (which I commented on below), I can't stop shaking my head at this "rapist" archetype she's perpetuating.

A rapist is someone who commits rape. Brock is a fucking rapist. Simple as that.

She's only like 20, so I can see why she'd say such stupid shit.

But the fact that there are older people who think this way...

each level comes with different restrictions.

Secondly the point is to red flag individuals. If you come in contact with someone on the registry, hopefully you'd want to gather more information about them and you can find out about their crime.

IF its up to this judge he mighta been level 1'd tho..i don't know the specifics of Cali's registry .

I've been seeing this contention the past couple of years. These issues exist everywhere in the world. Often, to a much greater extent. If anything....I'd argue that what North Americans might call 'white' countries tend to be much more effective in acknowledging and prosecuting sex-related crimes. Relatively speaking of course.

I don't know. There's competing agendas here.

It's not only white males who are aided by what's described as 'rape culture'. Though I'd agree white males are more likely to benefit from it. This is mostly an issue of gender in my eyes. I would be hesitant to characterize this problem as a white supremacy issue. What does that mean to female victims who were raped/assaulted by males of color and went through similar experiences with the justice system?

Would you agree with me that the racial aspect of this event is secondary to the gender aspect?

The white woman accusing the innocent black man of rape is one of the oldest
American ways to kill a black man, so I
dunno many stories at all about black men
walking after being accused by a white
woman. That's one reason the OJ verdict
was so shocking and controversial.

>Would you agree with me that the racial aspect of this event
>is secondary to the gender aspect?

Gender is definitely an issue in rape
cases. That's undeniable. Yet, it only
outweighs race when neither the victim
nor the offender is white. That's just
American justice. In this particular case,
race is the definitely the major factor,
because there's NO way a black man is
caught in the act of rape by a group of
witnesses and walks. He'd be lucky if he
even survived the cops showing up. Let's
be realistic lol. That street harassment
legislation was for us and us alone.

Band dropped from Brooklyn gigs after drummer voices support for Stanford rapist

A drummer’s letter in support for Stanford rapist Brock Turner has led to her band being dropped from a series of Brooklyn gigs.

Leslie Rasmussen who plays percussion for Good English, wrote a letter to Judge Aaron Persky before her childhood friend was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman behind a dumpster last year.

Turner’s light six-month prison sentence and refusal to take responsibility for his actions have caused outrage across the country, with many calling for the judge’s resignation.

One of those whose letters may have led to the leniency is Rasmussen, a 20-year-old who grew up with the former Stanford swimmer in Ohio.

In a letter published in full by NYMag, she said that Turner was “such a sweetheart” and blamed her elementary school pal’s actions on college drinking culture and political correctness.

“I don't think it's fair to base the fate of the next ten + years of his life on the decision of a girl who doesn't remember anything but the amount she drank to press charges against him,” she said.

However, her statements in support of a man reviled by many did not sit well with some, including the Williamsburg-based Northside Festival.

On Monday night the event had been deluged with request to quash the performance of Good English, which was formed by Rasmussen and her older sisters in 2013.

“Due to recent information brought to our attention, Good English is no longer playing Northside Festival,” the festival said Tuesday on Twitter.

The individual venues that were set to host the Oakwood, Ohio, band, including Bar Matchless, and Industry City Distillery, also put out statements saying the group was not welcome on their stages.

Bar Matchless released a statement saying it does not support “victim blaming or rape apologists of any kind.”

The Dayton Music Art & Film Festival and Rumba Cafe in Columbus, Ohio, also said that upcoming dates for English were canceled.

Good English's Facebook page and website had been taken down by Tuesday night, though Rasmussen released a statement reported by Brooklyn Vegan.

She said that her original letter provided an opportunity for people to misconstrue my ideas into a distortion that suggests I sympathize with sex offenses and those who commit them or that I blame the victim involved. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and I apologize for anything my statement has done to suggest that I don’t feel enormous sympathy for the victim and her suffering.

Rasmussen said that Turner was "rightfully convicted" by stood by her criticisms of alcohol and said that her friend's character was "seriously affected by the alcohol he consumed. Other supporters of Turner have also faced scrutiny for their comments trivializing the rape and the crushing effect it has had on his victim.

His father Dan Turner was widely criticized for his own letter to the judge, in which he said that the changes in his son’s life were “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

On Tuesday a woman who described herself as a “lifelong friend” of the Turner family also created a “support fund” for them.

A Facebook page publicizing the campaign to ease the financial burden from the “monumental life-changing and tragic situation with Brock” was taken down, but a cached version showed it had garnered 44 likes at one point.

The page instructed supporters to give money to a Ohio-based account at Wright Patt Credit Union, and the Dayton Daily News reported that it is still active.

Can someone explain to me how the Turner family needs a support fund? Their child rapes someone, gets away with it basically, and now they need a support fund.

I tripped out when I saw that but it makes a lot of sense to me now. Oakwood is probably the most affluent suburb of Dayton. If she & this kid grew up there, then I can absolutely see where the sense of entitlement comes from. That's exactly how they live in this town.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/06/08/in-brock-turners-hometown-were-raising-kids-who-are-never-told-no/

Here's a snippet from the article: "Invariably, when I tell someone who knows Dayton that I live in Oakwood, they will assume that I am rich, narrow-minded, a Republican or some combination thereof."

***

OAKWOOD, Ohio — An alternate version of the Brock Turner sexual assault story has been spinning in my imagination since last January, when I first heard of his arrest.

In my version, he recognizes that what happened on Stanford’s campus behind that dumpster was rape. He comes to understand that intoxication is not consent. He takes responsibility for his violent “action” that irreparably harmed another human being, instead of blaming them on alcohol. Rather than spending a year and a half honing his story, making excuses and lawyering up, he pleads guilty. He looks his victim squarely in the eyes and says, “I’m sorry. I had no business putting my hands on or in you after you were no longer able to give consent. I should have helped you to safety instead of running and lying about why I did. I will do everything I can to spare you any further pain. I will spend the rest of my life educating young people about consent and sexual violence.”

Then he serves his punishment — perhaps even a sentence mitigated by his understanding of the crime, his taking responsibility, even his character references — because he gets it. He bears the weight of his guilt, and in doing so eases the burden of his victim.

But that’s not what happened. And because I live in the community that spawned Brock Turner, I have known on some level for many months that my version would never be reality.

Oakwood, Ohio, is about as idyllic a Midwestern community as one could imagine. The streets are tree-lined, the houses charming. The kids walk to school and go home for lunch. The schools are nationally recognized. In fact, the nickname for Oakwood is “The Dome,” so sheltered are its residents from violence, poverty and inconvenient truths. I have lived here for over 20 years.

Communities like this one have a dark side, though: the conflation of achievement with being “a good kid;” the pressure to succeed; the parents who shrug when the party in their basement gets out of control (or worse yet, when they host it) because “kids are gonna drink;” the tacit understanding that rules don’t necessarily apply. The cops won’t come. The axe won’t fall.

Yet now it has.

Invariably, when I tell someone who knows Dayton that I live in Oakwood, they will assume that I am rich, narrow-minded, a Republican or some combination thereof. If most residents were just the stereotype, though, I would not have been happy here as long as I have. For the most part, I have loved raising my kids here. But I have struggled, too. My closest friends and I have a long-standing joke about needing to remember to “lower the bar” around here — about not falling prey to the pressures to conform and compete, not buying the line that the schools or the kids here are special. Most of us understand our privilege and good fortune. Many do not.

There is an Oakwood in every city; there’s a Brock Turner in every Oakwood: the “nice,” clean-cut, “happy-go-lucky,” hyper-achieving kid who’s never been told “no.” There’s nothing he can’t have, do, or be, because he is special. Fortunately, most kids like this will march into their predictably bright futures without victimizing anyone along the way. Many will do good in the world.

But it’s not hard to draw a straight line from this little ‘burb (or a hundred like it) to that dumpster at Stanford. What does being told “no” mean to that kid? If the world is his for the taking, isn’t an unconscious woman’s body? When he gets caught, why wouldn’t his first impulse be to run, make excuses — blame the Fireball, or the girl or the campus drinking culture? That is entitlement. That is unchecked privilege.

When the news of Turner’s arrest broke a year and a half ago, it was met in this community with a fair amount of shock and denial. Before details emerged, the whispered sentiments at Starbucks and in the aisles of the local grocery were compassion for his parents and hopes for a fair trial. In light of his conviction and sentencing, though, I find that I’m hiding from social media and avoiding conversations on this subject, lest I have to listen to someone defend him. I don’t want to hear anyone start in about the nice family or the good kid. My kids went to high school with him. I ran the community center swim team he was on. No, I don’t “know” Brock Turner like his friends or neighbors do. But I do know what he did, and so do we all, based on the unanimous verdict of a jury and two eyewitnesses.

We now also know exactly what his victim suffered, and we know that he doesn’t own any of it. Neither do his apologists. Letters of support — his father’s and at least one of his friends’ — are making the rounds online, and they are shockingly tone-deaf. His father has blamed alcohol and promiscuity. His friend said, “Rape on campus isn’t always because people are rapists.” That either of these letters cut ice with the judge is just further proof of how broken the system is.

I thought the outrage over this story would start before now, but it took a victim’s statement going viral to bring it the attention it deserves. At every turn, I’ve thought of how things could have gone differently. I’ve wondered if all of this was the attorney’s doing — that Turner and his family were manipulated into denial because their lawyer told them there was no other alternative. But his father’s letter and his own lame “apology” make it seem clear that they truly believe that bad timing and alcohol — not Turner himself — were to blame.

Ultimately, there is no happy ending to a story like this one, not in the version I imagined months ago or in the one that actually came to pass. I take some solace in the fact that the victim’s brave, eloquent statement has brought more attention to rape culture than any single indictment or verdict could.

It’s cold comfort, to be sure.

You can't apologize for people taking you words the wrong way without showing what your words really meant.

Like line by line she needs to clarify the sentences in her letter for this 'apology' to mean anything

But she used the word misconstrue instead of clarify. My same feelings stand. Show us exactly which statements were misconstrued.

"She said that her original letter provided an opportunity for people to misconstrue my ideas into a distortion that suggests I sympathize with sex offenses and those who commit them or that I blame the victim involved. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and I apologize for anything my statement has done to suggest that I don’t feel enormous sympathy for the victim and her suffering."

http://earhustle411.com/white-drug-dealer-gets-no-jail-time-judge-says-it-would-expose-him-to-streetwise-criminals-wthockey-puck/

Simon-Beveridge
A convicted cocaine dealer has avoided prison time after a judge said being behind bars would expose him to ‘streetwise’ criminals.

Simon Beveridge kept his freedom after a court heard a “breathtakingly frank” testimony from him.

The judge wondered whether it was in the public interest to put him in prison for his first offences, reports the Gazette.

He said the “naive” defendant would attract attention from criminals who were “vastly convicted and streetwise to the nth degree” if he was jailed.

“I ask myself, do the people of Teesside benefit by exposing him to that?” said Recorder David Myerson QC. “I have answered that question firmly in the negative.”

The judge had called Beveridge into the witness-box, saying: “I want him to come and talk to me. I want to hear it from him.”

Beveridge, 27, replied: “I had no choice. I got in a bit of debt. They were asking for the money back.

“I never had it. I missed a few payments. They give me a phone and white powder and said ‘that’ll clear your debt off’.”

He said he did not ask family to borrow money because they were going through a bad time, and he had friends who used Class A drugs.

Beveridge, of Queens Avenue, Thornaby, admitted possessing cocaine with intent to supply and possessing cannabis.

Prosecutor Emma Atkinson said he was on edge and physically shaking when police came to search his home on September 10 last year.

Asked if there were any drugs, he went to a black jacket and produced a package of 7.7g of cocaine in 15 bags, worth £310.

He also had £208 cash, phones carrying drug-related texts, scales, a “tick list” and a small amount of cannabis.

Andrew White, defending, said: “He’s extremely remorseful and through me he expresses his apologies and regret for this.

“He’s a long-term user of cannabis. He’s got himself well out of his depth here.

“He’s clearly never been to custody before. He’s a vulnerable young man. I can tell you he’s absolutely terrified at the thought of going to custody.”

He asked the defendant: “Why did you agree to supply cocaine?”

The judge said the sentence was in the interests of Beveridge and “much, much more importantly” the community.

“In the normal course there is no doubt that people who sell Class A drugs go to prison,” added Recorder Myerson.

“Drugs are a scourge. They are corrupting, they are addictive and people who prey on the weaknesses of others should expect immediate custodial sentences.

“Of course his debt problems are entirely his own fault, nonetheless it seems to me there was a degree of pressure there.

“I’m satisfied he told me the truth. That was, in my judgment, breathtakingly frank.”

He said Beveridge was “a short-lived cocaine seller” whose crime was isolated, and proposed probation help had “reasonable prospects of success”.

Beveridge was given a two-year jail term, suspended for two years, with supervision and 120 hours’ unpaid work.

http://www.fresnobee.com/news/nation-world/national/article82960947.html

Turner’s mother, Carleen Turner, wrote a letter nearly four pages long and doesn’t mention the victim of the sexual assault once. Instead, she talks about her son’s childhood, how he asked a high school girlfriend to prom and his swimming and academic career for two pages. She then talks about how devastated she and her family has been since the weekend in January when Turner sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman.

“My first thought upon wakening every morning is ‘this isn’t real, this can’t be real. Why him? Why HIM? WHY? WHY?’ ” Carleen Turner wrote. “I have cried every single day since Jan. 18.”

She said she hasn’t been able to decorate a new home because she can’t bear to put up happy photos of her family. She said Turner was just “trying to fit in with the swimmers he idolized.”

She continues later that Turner will have to register as a sexual offender, and is concerned that he will have to register at the highest tier.

“Brock will have to register at the highest tier which means he is on the same level as a pedophile/child molester. There is no differentiation,” she writes. “The public records will reflect a Tier 3 so people will wrongly assume he is a child molester. I fear for his lifelong safety.”

Other members of Brock Turner’s family had similar sentiments, focusing on the impact on their family and not mentioning the victim.

“We were shocked, and stunned by the outcome and left to the only thing we could do — hold each other and cry. We still are in disbelief,” Turner’s grandparents, Carolyn and Richard Bradfield, wrote. “Brock is the only person being held accountable for the actions of other irresponsible adults.”

Brock Turner’s sister, 22-year-old Caroline Turner, also blames alcohol for the sexual assault. She also does not mention the victim, but says her brother “put himself in a situation and willingly participated in it.”

“Think of the extraordinary potential he has to be a voice in society and speak out against the binge drinking and sexual promiscuity that defines culture on college campuses,” Caroline Turner wrote. “His dreams were shattered in the course of an evening, but every action he took could have been prevented.”
