Last time was in Santa Barbara, it was a early 40's White couple who had a super Middle Class type house. Before I arrived, they told me they would probably be gone, but that the key would be under the mat, and that their dog would be there to "Greet me." Said the dog will bark and run up to me, but he's extremely friendly. I'm not a huge dog lover, so I was already like.......ok? Luckily, they were home when I came, but yeah, the dog kept running up on me.
It just felt weird, like I'm staying at someone's house who I never met, and being a guest at their house...and yeah, that's exactly what it is, but really calling it out just makes me realize how strange it is. I can even see if it was a back house, but being inside their actual house just feels wild to me.

there are reasons for not using Airbnb (and similar) that aren't dumb, and if that's a reason for you not wanting it to replace hotels so you have nothing else to use it makes sense.

Keep in mind what that racist did here isn't illegal. Whereas, if a hotel pulled something like this it would literally be crime.
I've heard plenty of stories from black people who were denied AirBnb for no apparent reason or owners all of a sudden acting a certain way because you show up and you are not who they expected.
It's definitely a factor in choosing a professional establishment that treats you professionally (and when the don't there are repercussions) as oppose to dealing with a homeowner who can tell you "no niggers allowed" and the worst that can happen is he gets booted of Airbnb.
But yeah RJCC is a miserable sad little man who abuses the tiny bit of power he gets from being a MOD.

I have used it 3 or 4 times and never had an issue. I wouldnt rent a room though. I want the whole house.

Some folks rent out empty houses, condos or sections of their houses with private entrances and bathrooms. I'd do that. I'm not staying in a room (with other folks in the house) or anywhere I'd have to share a bathroom.

the general concept can feel weird. but there are some properties that are basically only used for renting to travelers and other times you can just rent spots where the owners will be away.
i've done both and it was less weird than i thought it would be. if the owners are gonna be home, i'd prefer a hotel tho unless i was really penny pinching
