I have this insecurity that we as Black parents, on the younger side (both just under 40) would have a really hard time finding someone interested in Au Pairing with us.

we flirted with the idea of a nanny but thats the main issue, who do you trust with your kids? Do you want someone Black or just whoever is the best at the job? We werent even thay far into the discussion when we nixed it due to trust issues.

we lucked out and my wife just got hired to teach dance at Preschool of the Arts in Charlotte. Its in the ritzy part of town. So we get reduced daycare at the YMCA until our kid is old enough to enter the program.

i just got an email about our kids schedule and I'm feeling uneasy about letting someone else watch my kid.

in texas you can only have 4 newborns per adult and no more than 8 newborns per classROOM
in my daycare there is only ONE newborn room
so 8 newborns and two adults in there at all times

those are state law maximums

if i wanted my 5 month to be in there she'd get preference because we have our 2 year old already going there
my daughter has a classmate whose parents have a 3 months old
so there is 2 of your 8 spots already

it's not that hard

I'm familiar with one black couple that had some au pairs. I think they had african or west indian au pairs... either way, they treated them like "the help" and had a decent experience.

they have 3 kids and they both work. They've never had their kids in daycare, only au pairs then straight to school. Seems to have worked out for them. I know they were really close to the first au pair, they would take her along on vacations and stuff.

service organization. The Au Pairs only get around $195/week from the host family from most of the official organizations. Wonder if there was something more to that situation?

With the oldest they had a (Black) Belizean woman that they absolutely adored. She was perfect....like a bonus grandmother. Shared a lot of the same values.

Then they relocated and had a Mexican lady that couldn't comb the kids hair, allowed the 3 year old to make her cry... it was a mess. They had to let her go because she apparently gave up at a park and let him wild out while she'd be on her phone going for walks. The parents heard about it from other parents & nannies.

Now they have an eastern european woman who at leas is able manage them and keep them safe.

caregivers. Our daughter has had them in her current daycare, and they are just ok, no issues with them, but it's not something i'd choose if I had a choice. With the Au Pair situation, you do have a choice though.

more than a caregiver or person actively imparting that onto a child in the early years.

I legit have beef with Disney and all of these toy and media companies for perpetuating and imposing this steady stream of whiteness and white standards. It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to avoid it, especially if you have a child in daycare around other children.

...but not the way you described it.

I wasn't supposed to be here.

My parents filed for divorce in when I was 3 months old.

Somehow...I ended up in the care of a 19 year old Haitian Immigrant who was working for my father at the time.

Stayed with that woman for the next 12 years. One of the best shits that ever happened in my life

Not sure how that pops off in the regular world. We were well off but not THAT well off

Me. Growing up my dad and mom both worked for GM. And I had a Nanny named Connie. When she wasn't working with my family anymore, she worked with my aunt and uncle.

She was awesome!

And yes...I'm black American. My parents and their parents are black American 😀
