Been a decent (not great) year for my flowers - apparently it didn't get cold enough for some of the more finicky daffodil varieties, but I've got 15 or so that bloom starting early March. Last one just opened last weekend.
There was a giant clump of azaleas win front of the house when I moved in, purple pink and red all mashed in. I divided them up and separated out the rooted cuttings, now I have clumps of azalea all over my yard. Plenty of wildflowers... woodland irises just starting to bloom, my Indian pink plant just started up, the native + an exotic Jack in the Pulpit, couple different primroses, hostas, etc. Blue eyed grass will come soon, then hydrangeas... goal is to have something in flower most of the year, bulbs, shrubs, flowering trees. Mix of native and exotic to keep the pollinators & local insects happy (I stopped pulling out goldenrod and milkweed a few years back, now it's everywhere; also planted a few spicebushes in hopes of attracting more spicebush swallowtails) and also add a bit of character.
Veggie garden is full, I'll need to build a few more 4x8 beds this spring. Had a salad for lunch with spinach, lettuce, kale and other mixed greens that I picked last night. Plus radishes. A lot of radishes this year. Checking every day on my seed pots for the tomatoes (mom has a greenhouse so she starts early, I cover the second wave so we have tomatoes through the end of season), cukes, eggplant, and peppers. Garlic, peas, carrots are up but a few more weeks before I can eat 'em. Asparagus patch is sucking wind b/c my plants are mostly females. Raspberry patch doing well. Pair of mulberry trees (one white, one red) fruit well; I try to get some every year to use in a batch of beer. Blueberry plants haven't produced well for me ever, at least not enough so that there were any left for me after the birds got through with them.
And we're down to 3 (older) chickens; we were thinking of chicken stew b/c they didn't lay all winter, but from early March on we've been getting three eggs most days and that's plenty for us.
I'm jealous of your bees; can't believe you're doing that on a balcony, unless i misunderstood. Would very much like to add them to the backyard but the Mrs. is set against it. She'll warm up over time though. ------- so I'm in a band now: album ---> http://greenwoodburns.bandcamp.com/releases Soundcloud ---> http://soundcloud.com/greenwood-burns
