"The official 2016 song of the summer post"

What's it going to be this year? More than likely it's already bubbling out there.

Does Panda have the strength to last until July?
Is Yachty going to gain some steam after all the ground work Big Kuntry put in for him?

Sometimes a bit later, but we'll see.

Hell, what was the official song for last year? I feel like this year has been BAD for club hits. The ONLY songs from this year that are must play are really Work, Formation, and Panda. Even Controlla and One dance are so.....ehhhh to me. They never get the amazing response you would expect

But I thought it might be too soon and I wanted to gamify it and put together some parameters for a person to actually be identified as predicting the winner of picking the song of the summer. I got stumped how we actually determine what is the song of the summer. If we use Billboard it will be a cheesy song (it was Cheerleader last summer) if we use spotify it will probably not include exclusive tracks (though it made the right choice in my opinion by picking lean on).

It sounds like the song that plays at the end of an animated movie where all the characters sing and dance along to it. And then the movie's villain shows up and gets their own little dance spotlight for a second.

It was big in 96, but I feel like "If I ruled the world" was the biggest song that Summer.

Yet, I remember being at a show back in Florida in 2004, and the band said "this next song we are going to perform was the biggest song of the Summer back in 1996 when the Olympics were going" and they started playing "My boo" and I said.........was it? Maybe because they're from ATL, but I never realized it was bigger than all the other hits that year. It was so much bangin that Summer, though.

The song is currently 32 on hot 100... It was 27 2 weeks ago... Any massive "running man challenge" video could throw it into top 20

It never harted this high ever

On Pop Radio for sure...

If I was Jermaine Dupri or Lil Jon (A&R for So So Def Allstars) i'd make an EDM Drop type remix and let that bitch go!

It doesn't seem like there's a monster hit that's overshadowing everything else. There's a handful of songs that are getting heavy rotation but there's no single stand out cut.

So, unless I start reading on the net that pop has fallen off (I just read a "song of the summer" net article a week ago), it seems pop - and whatever songs get lot's of airplay - is still "hot" with the people.

For instance, I thought the DJ Snake feat. Bipolar Sunshine song "Middle" would be a big song, but radio isn't really playing it much after I first heard it about a month ago. So from that I'm evaluating what is getting played a lot is getting "crowd reaction."

"All the way up" is peaking in L.A. right around now, but I feel like it peaked in NY a month and some ago.

"Controlla" and "One dance" are radio big and get cool reaction, but don't seem to be as huge as folks say. That Pop-Dancehall sound is starting to dominate, though...including Tory Lanez "Luv"

The last few have, really.

Like, I made a Spring mix in early March, and only 3-4 songs that dropped since then are even requested...Controlla, One dance, and For Free...mainly Drake songs. And then Kent Jones "Don't mind" gets some love, but nothing really huge. "All the way up" and "Panda" are months old now, and still the most requested. "Formation" was huge in a way, but still seemed to be lacking something to make it HUGE huge.

For the "streets" aka most Black 18-35 clubs...."Controlla" was MUCH bigger than "One dance," and "For free" was bigger than both of them.

Billboard and the Pop/Open Format/Mixed clubs are a completely different thing.
