40 years ago he came out with an album that changed the Black music world.

Pieces of that album has been heard in records made from today, going back 35 years.

jones career has lasted over 50 years (as opposed to the 35 you mention)

how is 35 > 50?

side note: I just recently found out Quincy Jones produced the first song that was played on the moon (the Sinatra version of "Fly me to the moon). that's dope

side note 2: the members of 3-6 mafia have won oscars and quincy jones has not

For hip hop/rap, George got him beat.

For R&B of course Q got it.

But you right tho, I was all up in my feelings after watching that 1976 Mothership show in Houston

i agree on the lens part

one thing tho, I'd say jones is more known for jazz than r&b (even having done Thriller) THAT gives you an idea of his influence/skill/talent

That's why he was on the moon and Dr. Funk had to build his own Mothership!

I know Q did Thriller and other top joints but he was more "safe" than George.
More clean cut.
I even said Q did more R&B too.

Not knocking Q at all. But Clinton's whole albums have made up the entire discography of some of our best known producers (I see you Dre).

Q was more to be sampled by JD and Madlib and 9th

it feels like Clinton was more for the streets than Q was.

Kinda like Rick vs Prince

Rick was that dirty nasty freak.
Prince was cleaned up and you could take home to see your aunts.
But Prince's dirty side came out in The Time and other acts.

Prince talked about having sex with your/his sister, wore panties and fishnets, "raping" cab drivers, etc

the time and them were way tamer (on record) than Prince titled albums

i'd submit that Rick got raunchier (on record, again) BECAUSE of Prince on the basis of "soft and wet" being so successful

Rick on stage smoking weed IN THE 70s!!!!!
I could get arrested for having a joint in my pocket right now.
But he blazing on stage in the 70s

Rick openly did coke.
He was just a wild child.
He and his music was very groid.

Prince did have lyrics and an appearance that pushed the envelope.
But Rick ripped that shit open.

Maxxx can explain better than me as he lived thru it and I only heard about it from my mom.

RJ would have joints in the open and do his thing with Teena Marie in the open.Prince and Gayle Chapman had some moments, but nothing like Rick and Lady T. Rick nearly got arrested on stage a many a time, because having a joint in the open in 79-82 on stage ain't the same now.

both pushed envelope on imagery, lyrical and style theme, however Rick had puff clouds at is show

Again, depends upon what lens you use.

His album 'Gula Matari' is an awesome rare groove type of thing that's been heavily sampled by 90's hip hop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzNP4NpZ0F8

The soundtrack for 'In Cold Blood' is in the all-time best scores for a movie that's amongst the best ever as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OypVbkPEyU&list=PLcDCUWJgRlZ5d7XA4QzjDA2SnSUuZ1uv4

One of the best later period disco songs in the Brothers Johnson's 'Stomp':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxceCsEtMCg

the list is kinda endless beyond the MJ stuff.

But Prince's dirty side came out in The Time and other acts.

once saw him at LAX (this was back when he was still with Angela Winbush)

it was a cool moment, they were just chillin' in the "regular people" terminal waiting for their flight like joe and jane schmo and he was wearing a "creamy", yellow velour track suit suit, which was unfortunate

I'm just walking in, looking for a seat having that "is that who I think it is?" moment. right as i find a seat a couple rows over he gets up and bends over (back to me) to get something out of his bag and BLAM i'm now confronted with his quite ashy old man buttcrack as his jacket does that "ride up" thing in the back

it was pretty horiffic

it killed all the mystique of "gangsta" Mr. Bigg and even a smidge off the "slow jam" master he is/was beyond that

he's still a legend, but it's very difficult to not get flashes of velour-ash-velour whenever I see bruh on tv or wherever

most of my brushes with fame go like that (some kind of bad twist ending)

Working with pop stars (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Madonna etc.) tops Quincy Jones' star power

and you can even argue The Neptunes have had a bigger impact on this generation than Quincy Jones

but Quincy Jones is pretty damn iconic

that's still only HALF as long as George Clinton, Nile Rogers and Quincy Jones have been at this.
That's why I said he needs another 20 years.
You can't compare a 20 ear run to a 45-50 year run.

Inspiration???
As i said before people have built their entire careers off George Clinton albums

Hell the chronic album ain't nothing but Mothership Connection part II

they are respectively 74 and 83 year old legends

I have no clue what you mean by a 45-50 year run when Quincy Jones' last album was 1995 and George Clinton's last hit was 1986

Pharrell has super duper surpassed George Clinton and I could see people arguing the same as Quincy Jones

George C made them albums when electronic instruments were in their INCEPTION
Pharrell came on board like 25 years after prince programmed 777-9311 on the LM1 and Roger and Zapp made computer love on a computer with the Panzer.

no one is disputing the foundation that was laid
just noting that said foundation was improved upon
but you might be too biased if George Clinton is what you were raised on

depends upon what lens you are viewing this from
in the OKP "artistic" view then Q wins because this is an artsy fartsy crowd and Q uses the full orchestra and big band (same and only reason why roots is considered GOOD in hip hop. it's a gimmick)
but for pure club bangers and gettin folks booty shakin and trunks rattlin, it's P Funk

It's funny cuz I'm from the Bay white folk out here love some 40 Fonzareli this is the same place that still plays bullshit like Mack of the Year in clubs (Dru Down). 40 garbage to me I like maybe 3 songs. Bay Area folk like Mac Dre, Celly Cell, C-Bo, Yukmouth that shit is terrible. Give me Green Day instead the rep the bay better.

I'm sorry but if you're pining for that new Green Day or 3 Doors Down album to drop I can't objectively take your view on rap.

There are just certain things about it

If you from Tha Bay (prolly from Stockton anyway tryna claim Tha Town) and you not giving 40 his then you bootsy.

I'm not gonna have a serious music discussion with anyone thinks 40 water is one of the best at anything. I respect his longevity but I don't like most of his music. And if you compare compare Green Day with 3 Doors Down I figure you only listen to maybe 3 genres of music.

Andre Nickatina
Messy Marv
San Quin
Jacka
Hussla
D-Lo
Philthy

The funny thing is some of our music greats (especially jazz) only listen to 2-3 types of music
and they probably have no idea who Green Day or Coldplay is.

I doubt Travis Tritt nor Luciana Souza knows who e40 is or even heard any of his songs.

This can go into a Bird vs Magic debate so I'll leave it here

now look, is quincy jones walking american musical history? hell yeah.

but when i envision my uncle dancing at a cookout w/drink in hand - pfunk comes to mind. sorry.

what i hate most is that pfunk is thrown around freely, but funkadelic is PROOF that them dudes were black rock & roll stars that were prevented from being billed as such.
