This is what frustrates me about a lotta these armchair socialists now. There's a difference between people who have $X in compensation from their jobs and folks who live off of the proceeds of their investments.
I fall into the former which means I get my shit kicked in by the IRS because I make $X in wages yearly. If I made the same amount in capital gains, I'd pay close to nothing. It's crazy.

1. We just bought a home, so we paid a shit-ton of property tax during the year, which we wrote off. And given that the first few years what seems like damn near all of our mortgage payments go towards the interest, we wrote all that off. We know it won't always be like that, so we decided to use it now on the home improvements we couldn't afford when we moved in.
2. We decided that we liked the idea of "forced savings" during the year, and enjoying the return at the end. Gives us enough to get some good stuff we need, and sock away the rest.

We can't write off anything that goes towards the principal. But since 2015 was our first full year of being homeowners, I wanna say like half of our mortgage payments were going towards the interest, rather than the principal (just about all mortgage are structured this way, at least out here). It's going to be like that for the first few years, then more money goes towards just paying the principal.
So for these first few years, it helps us get a bigger return, which we then use to buy stuff that we've needed and build our saving and shit.

We get fucked, because there's no gray area to exploit when it comes to wages and withholding.
Business income and capital gains/losses on the other hand...a joke. If anything, this country needs MORE auditors, not fewer. I'm slightly biased, but still.

i use to do 0/0 but it hurt throughout the year. Then I did 2/1 and while I got back over $2k with federal, state was around $300 (which was fine). At my recent job I did 1/1. I still get back around 1K and 300 but that's the best way to go I think. Part of that is my student loan interest. I just realized only $2500 is written off, last year I paid $2800. So now I'm like...how can I just pay up to 2500 and everything over that just go to the principal. I need to call and see if that's possible because why pay more interest if I can't write it off.
