development and learning...and me having a problem with it because I recognize that mistakes in language and communication picked up at an early age can take years to reverse/correct and could potentially be at the detriment of the child.
I also attempted to make the point that we shouldn't be so quick to embrace and hold on to and romanticize parts of our culture that were born from our mistreatment over hundreds of years..... but folks want to focus on what they feel fits their vision of pro/enlightened Blackness so there's that.....

If only you could see the carefully curated playlists I had from years 1 - 2...smh... once she started talking and learning how things and technology worked...all bets were off.. she has her own tastes now... the only control I have is what she's exposed to and had immediate access to under our roof.... My youngest sibling, my sister, was born when I was 16 years old. I found myself trying to influence her musical tastes heavy from the time she was an infant up until she hit 6th grade... Then I gave up...one man can't do it alone and outside influences won out.... she's mid 20's now...and we had a convo a couple of years ago about music... she was talking about all this stuff she was just now getting into.... I looked at her sideways and told her about ALLL the music I use to try to play for her in the car (I was in my teens still when she started daycare and early 20's by the time she started elementary etc)...and how she would look at me like some crazy old man trying to share whack music with her...the very whack music that she was NOW trying to dig in the crates and "discover" smh.....

As someone who has a 4 year old who loves to control the music...LMAO!!!!!
But my baby is a tad bit different. I love it that she loves Q-Tip, Tribe, +FE and Little Brother. Sometimes it is a Frozen, Peg + Cat or Barney day. But other days...my munchkin will listen to some KING or Robert Glasper, The Roots or Erykah's Mixtape.
Hell, my girl was singing Steely Dan in the middle of Safeway and had the white people just floored!
I know she's going to have her own taste in music, but I try to expose her to a range of good music and it doesn't matter if it's jazz, hip hop, and R&B so that she knows good music when she hears it...and stay away from the crap.

That's the only CD my daughter has heard for about the last 14 months and she knows every song on the CD If I back out of the driveway before putting the CD on she will start yelling MOMMY! MOMMY! HANDS UP! HANDS UP! (she's 2 and her father taught her how to "raise the roof")
