I don't characterize voters as stupid - even Trump voters. However - a large percentage of voters are misinformed and consistently voting against their own interests - citing faulty logic as justification for voting patterns.

Her black support hasn't been monolithic, and I'm assuming you aren't saying it has been. If you're saying this is an argument Clinton supporters make, I think linking to a source and critiquing that would be more helpful.

Writers like Donna Murch and Michelle Alexander, while making racial justice arguments against voting for Clinton, have been careful not to say their opponents argue "black support for her should be monolithic". Framing pro-Clinton arguments in this way probably strengthens the Clinton campaign, because it feeds into stereotypes of Sanders supporters. It just gives them more ammunition in the war of narratives.

The longer the primary season goes on - the less reliable her firewall is with black voters. That said - she still gets the overwhelming lion-share of black voters (70-80%), and inexplicably so (as Michelle Alexander has so poignantly illustrated throughout the course of this primary).

Sure - but 70-80% is a huge segment of a voting bloc. While not monolithic - it's an overwhelming majority. For Obama - that certainly would make sense. For Hillary Clinton? It's wildly peculiar.

As I explained above - I've been very clear on this issue and have never called any group of voters "stupid" -- even Trump voters. What I have said is that many voters are sadly misinformed - which in many instances isn't their fault given the way corporate media covers elections/politics - and given the way the political process is rigged. Also - many voters continually vote against their own interests. Whether we're talking about lower-middle class whites with a high-school education or a significant percentage of black voters - it's clear that there's a disconnect with what their real concerns actually are versus who they cast their vote for in the ballot box.

There's a fine line between arguing that Clinton is not the best candidate on racial justice and telling people they should not have voted for her (especially if you are white and telling this to black people). I have a black colleague who received an anonymous copy of Michelle Alexander's "Hillary Clinton Doesn't Deserve the Black Vote" article in her department mailbox, which did not go to any of her white colleagues. It was probably from a white Sanders supporter, and she was offended by it (maybe to the point of voting for Clinton). It's exactly this kind of thing that crosses the line for people, and comes off as paternalistic and insulting.

Like I said, I don't think that's your intention. But if it looks like you're criticizing black people for their voting choices, it will create a backlash rather than change anybody's mind.

Clinton is right around that number. Monolithic doesn't mean *every single* vote. Clinton has the overwhelming majority of the black vote in this primary. Whether we call that "monolithic" or not is not particularly important - but the numbers are important.

God forbid we ever had a situation where 75%+ of all white voters voted for somebody like Trump - it would be clear that the narrative would be "Trump dominates the white vote" - and rightfully so. Thankfully, that will never happen.

I agree - which is why you won't find me telling anyone how they should vote. But that doesn't mean I don't make my case for why I think a particular candidate is far superior.

I'm not - but I can see how some may perceive it to be that way. I'm unapologetic about how and why I think it's deeply problematic that Clinton has been able to collect the lion-share of the black vote - and I do think it warrants a deeper conversation into the dynamics of the electorate and the psychology of varying voting blocs.

What's particularly interesting to me is not just how Clinton has been given a pass on issues important to black voters (that she has a poor record on) - but how conversely Sanders has been slandered and has had his (very strong) record mischaracterized on those same issues.

I always hear something like "well yea Clinton is problematic but Sanders supporters are all in the Whole Foods check-out line" as if that's a legitimate analysis of their respective records on issues important to progressives concerned about economic, racial, and social equality/justice.
