Bill Clinton knocks ‘awful legacy’ of last 8 years
Donovan Slack, USA TODAY 10:07 a.m. EDT March 22, 2016

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2016/03/21/bill-clinton-knocks-obamas-awful-legacy/82094792/

Former President Bill Clinton, stumping on behalf of his wife in Washington state on Monday, urged people to vote for Hillary Clinton “if you believe we’ve finally come to the point where we can put the awful legacy of the last eight years behind us.”

It was not initially* clear if it was an unintended gaffe or something he meant to say, but it didn’t take long for Republicans to seize on it and post the clip to YouTube. Here’s the full quote:

“I literally from the time I met her 45 years ago ‘til we talked yesterday, she is the best change-maker I have ever known. She always finds a way to make something good happen, to make people feel empowered, to buy people into the process, to make democracy work the way the framers intended for it to work.

Now, if you don’t believe we can all grow together again, if you don’t believe we're ever going to grow again, if you believe it’s more important to re-litigate the past, there may be many reasons that you don’t want to support her.

But if you believe we can all rise together, if you believe we’ve finally come to the point where we can put the awful legacy of the last eight years behind us and the seven years before that when we were practicing trickle-down economics and no regulation in Washington, which is what caused the crash, then you should vote for her because she’s the only person who basically had good ideas will tell you how she’s going to pay for them, can be commander in chief and is a proven change maker with republicans and democrats and independents alike.”

*Update: An aide to Bill Clinton says the legacy he was referring to was Republicans' obstructionism.

"When Republicans controlled the White House, their trickle-down approach drove our economy to the brink of a collapse. After President Obama was elected, Republicans made it their number one goal to block him at every turn," spokesman Angel Urena said in a statement. "That unprecedented obstruction these last eight years is their legacy, and the American people should reject it by electing Hillary Clinton to build on President Obama's success so we can all grow and succeed together."

It was shoddy wording but he clarified afterwards.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/21/politics/bill-clinton-hillary-obama-legacy/

I doubt that he intentionally meant to take shots at Obama, mainly because they have been running on his record.

And GOP's obstructionism has been awful.

It's one of those things where if you want to dislike him you will read it one way, and if you want to give him the benefit of the doubt you will take his clarification at face value.

2008 b/c Obama wasn't POTUS yet.

yes, he did throw shade on his wife's opponent - as any good husband who supports his wife's political campaign would do during a primary season. since that time WJC, HRC and BHO have forgiven/forgotten as evidenced by HRC working in BHO's administration in a cabinet position and BHO's (soft) endorsement of HRC's current presidential campaign (as sitting POTUS usually avoids outright endorsement of a presidential campaign for anyone other than his VP).

not necessarily - as i said earlier several ppl and groups have created legacies over the last 8 years, not just President Obama. when 'the world' refers to a 'legacy of the last 8 years' they're not necessarily referring to Obama's. which is why context matters. the context here is that Bill was campaigning for his wife who is a Democrat who served in Obama's administration and is currently running in part on her achievements as part of that admin and on the admin's achievements, generally. that admin and President Obama himself dealt w/a seemingly unprecedented amount of obstruction from the GOP-controlled Congress over the last 8 years. that obstructionism is the GOP's legacy over the last 8 years and that is the 'awful legacy' to which Bill referred.

b/c if he had he'd be referring to his wife's most important professional work since she was part of Obama's administration and is directly tied to his legacy. and she's running on her work in the Obama administration and Bill is supporting her run and is campaigning for her. he would not throw shade on her work when he's out there working on her behalf.

In response to Reply # 25

as he didn't name any particular person. he referred to a series of events.

several ppl and groups have created legacies w/in the last 8 yrs. the Chicago Blackhawks, for example. the org has won the Stanley Cup 3 times since 2009. the San Francisco Giants have won the World Series 3 times since 2010. Serena Williams has won 12 or so major tennis titles since 2008. and the list goes on.

point - the world is not JUST talking about Obama's legacy over the last 8 yrs. if any person refers generally to some 'legacy' over the last 8 yrs they're not necessarily referring to PBO. here President (Bill) Clinton referred to a legacy other than President Obama's.

While Drumpf dominates election coverage the world is considering how the last eight years have bequeathed a legacy of angry, ignorant, extremism.

Nevertheless, a person who regularly throws rocks then tries to hide hands may indeed find it easy to attach meaning that's not in Clinton's words. Easy to believe others are guilty of the same motivations that drive their actions.

Just IMO though.

I wouldn't put it pass Bill Clinton to run against Obama's record if he thought that would be advantageous. But they have already made the decision that the best way to run would be on his record.

I'd also might buy this if this were a more conservative crowd and it was private enough where he thought he could get away with taking shots at BHO in a way to give his wife an advantage. But that's not the case because in that very same quote he is taking a shot at GWB.

There are a million ways to knock Bill Clinton. I don't think this a very strong one.

I am "caping" for what I think is the truth.

this move would be inconsistent and detrimental to Hillary's 2016 campaign. she's closely aligned herself with Obama and his legacy and says she (claims) to continue building on the progress he's made.

you're suggesting that Bill is either unaware of or unwilling to cooperate with this strategy and is intentionally or unintentionally in conflict w/ the Clinton campaign.

or, he was referring to Republican antics over the past 8 years. one scenario seems far more likely than the other.

She's not gonna sacrifice the base she's assembling for a handful of Republican stragglers.

9 times out of 10, politics makes perfect sense. You rarely see a candidate o off the track.

And I feel like I need to add a disclaimer...I'm not in Hillary or Bernie's camps.

I assumed he was talking about the deliberate Republican obstructionism documented since Day One of Obama's Presidency.

He wouldn't intentionally tick off millions of Obama's supporters and Republicans know this.

I wouldn't doubt if they tried to make a commercial of that soundbite but they know it was interpreted incorrectly if anyone believes he was criticizing the Obama legacy when Hillary has pretty much been lock step with the President's accomplishments during her own campaign.

Nothing to see her folks.

There's not a doubt that Hillary is gonna pivot to a less Obama-driven campaign for the general. Bill said something here that can be interpreted in a way that would be part of this process. Bill is a master of language and always has been.

You think Hillary is gonna continue that Obama love-fest in the general? I don't. And they've already pivoted. No way does Bill say this before the southern democratic primaries.

for political gain. The only people who aren't 'in' on this would be those without a firm understanding of the political landscape over the last 20 years and/or those who fail to exercise critical thinking and easily accept simple explanations of the world served to them by others. Just process this a little bit.

Hillary Clinton served in Obama's administration, is a member of the same political party, and shares most if not all of Obama's political beliefs, and he policies will not differ much from his. Obama is extremely popular and won both of his elections handedly. If he were to run again, he would destroy any of the candidates running. Further, this is primary season, meaning that she is running for the support of her party, so Bill is speaking to Democrats, who overwhelmingly support President Obama and his legacy. What would her campaign possibly have to gain by stating that HIS legacy over the last 8 years has been awful? Surely, you can't really believe that Bill Clinton was talking about Obama, and I would guarantee that if he was to criticize the President, he wouldn't mince his words.

They all say they'll find a way to bring the whole country together.

As a matter of fact, Obama said it and accused Bill much more directly of failing at it, in his infamous interview comment that Reagan was a "transformative" president in a way that Clinton was not.

W was a "uniter not a divider." Obama promised "the UNITED states of America." It's just what candidates say.

Trump's ascendance was predictable and has nothing to do with your misinterpretation here. We verbally communicate by stringing words together into sentences. Words have meanings and you literally have to introduce new words and meaning in order to come to the conclusion that you did. This is the English language.

Now if you want to make a passionate post about the early '90s crime bill that would be a worthy debate....But this shit? There's a reason why no one else posted those comments on this board...

But, and no diss, what u r getting it is pretty silly....And doesn't take into account the current political atmosphere and, more importantly, Bill Clinton's mentioning of "trickle down theory," probably the no. 1 Commandment in Republican orthodoxy, should be the tip off what Slick Willy was actually talking about....

it cuts both ways. He said what he said and most intelligent people can place the quote within the context of her broader political beliefs and the broader campaign without resorting to pulling out "I go ya" quotes. I mean, look at the people riding hard for this interpretation

I feel like the lesson of Obama (and Trump, really, LOL) is that when you don't, you leave the door open for interpretation in a "gotcha" media culture, you get stuff like this.

Barack can't run again and someone needs to step in there and try to manage the situation (in the opinion of him and other Democrats). A speech should hit a crescendo, and he gave Barack credit and also acknowledged the ongoing Republican obstructionism. His candidate needs to be some sort antidote to what has gone on the last 8 years, but it seems pretty clear that

1. the 8-year parentheses are thrown around the financial meltdown
2. He credits Barack for the work he has accomplished in this challenging environment (even cited an example)
3. With the help of the voters, a key point that some missed, she can help be an agent of change. This all begins with the voters though.

I am not even a fan of hers, but the message was forward-thinking and absent of deep criticism that others are reaching for here.

he just doesn't have it anymore. He used to be slick, smooth, etc at campaigning but it feels like he is mailing it in for Hillary.

Prolly due to age but I feel like he really doesn't like Obama.

Editing title to reflect actual content of article.

Discussion is fine, tricking people into clicking isn't so much. That's spam.

Of course the Clintons hate Obama. Even if you are a Hilary fan, you have to admit this???

Folks acting like they are brunching together and sh!t, so that they feel good about their vote.

They've been rivals for a minute.

Are they able to come together for the party? Sure. Of course.

But Obama and Hilary were not riding around on a tandem bicycle for 4 years.

smh

And if Obama's numbers were down, the comment would have remained...the backtracking would be missing.

GOP War Room is who edited and posted that video, which is a criticism of legislative obstructionism. I'm pro-Bernie, but to ignore the nuance or take something presented free of context is just falling into what manipulative fucks like Matt Drudge or Breitbart try to do all the time.
Be better than that and always look at least one level down for a source or context in a pull quote.

Case, you should know manipulation better than this.

I posted a Subject Line that stated my view of Bill Clinton's comments. There is NO definitive way at this point to say what Bill meant or didn't mean. I think the dude is Slick and actually did try to Shade Obama on the sneak. And the way he intentionally worded his comment left him with an exit if things were to turn sour. But his comments could be taken at a way to say that the past 8 years under Obama have been awful, because the republicans have only been in the majority for the past 6 years.

Turns out that it was a call back to talking about the economic downturn after the housing bust 8 years ago and stagnant incomes during that time period. He praised Obama all over that speech. The aide even got it wrong.

I have been Skimming and I have not heard him praise President of Obama yet - NOT ONE TIME. He's praised Hillary many many times and he's said that she's has the best Ideas on the economy and defense.

not to get this post on track to the actual issue

obviously there are factual inaccuracies with Bill's statements, outside of trying to spin it to a BHO critique

but again

she's currently involved in 3 investigations

and we don't have to go back too far for evidence of the R hate for HRC

anybody care to debate this notion that somehow she's better suited to get things done because she can work with her constituents

and arrive at a better end result than BHO?

I mean, even at its base, there is a slight jab there

BTW, it is ironic that folks are jumping up to defend these remarks; taken out of context, watch the whole clip, etc...

when that's been going on for the entire campaign cycle for most of the candidates

at the risk of defending Trump, they spun an interview question to arrive at a headline = Trump will use nuclear weapons against Isis

when in fact he never actually said those words

that is, if your defense of Bill's comments is that it was taken out of context = welcome to the POTUS campaign 2016.

independents alike"

based on...what? anything to site in support of this statement

if HRC will be able to overcome, republican obstructionism, which BHO has not

what is that based on? other than her husband saying so

FTR, I did start the full video clip, which is about 45 minutes, got about 5 minutes in before I gave up

he's stumping for her, got it

but if you're gonna leave an open mic in front of Bill Clinton for 45 minutes

I would imagine there would be a few gotcha moments in there for Rs

kinda reinforces what I'm asking

the Clintons are fodder for Rs, I don't have any problem with taking him to task on the notion that a Clinton will be better suited to overcome R obstructionism.

the idea that Bill was saying HRC will be able to get past GOP obstruction where BHO couldn't comes out of that misinterpreted/mischaracterized quote. that's why i encouraged you to hear the full speech and then decide if you think that's what Bill meant when he said those words you've quoted.

this discussion has 0 to do w/Bernie or whatever thing you just brought up. i have no idea what you're talking about and it's not relevant here. this isn't a 'Well they do it to Bernie too so I can do it to Bill' thing. that line isn't persuasive.

vote for HRC if you want to leave that behind

but that doesn't have anything to do with BHO not being able to

= hunh?

I referenced Bernie and Trump, i.e. they pull these soundbites on the candidates all of the time

the fact that there is 44 minutes of Bill talking about other stuff

doesn't remove the issue...that you don't want to talk about.

IRT R obstructionism, it will be worse in a HRC administration

to soundbites and make conclusions, if you do not have the interest, desire, nor discipline to listen to entire campaign speeches from potential presidential candidates and their surrogates, then so be it. But to cite the fact that other candidates have also had their words twisted as some sort justification for your refusal to listen to the entire speech is asinine. Own your ignorance, you've come by it honestly.

some sort of indication of what they intend to discuss. For example, in this post, people have been debating whether or not the discussion of the awful legacy of the past 8 years was a criticism of Obama. The original poster, whose name you will find next to the number 1 at the top of your screen, initiated a discussion about that point. You're not getting anything on track by focusing on the truth of said interpretation, what was being litigated was the intent of his words. Each time you post about getting 'back on track' by disputing the veracity of whether Hilary can better fight Republican obstructionism than Barack, you are actually doing the opposite and this makes you seem dim. Continue on.

"the discussion of the awful legacy of the past 8 years was a criticism of Obama"

I'm more talking about sticking to facts

there's no way you can say...the awful legacy of the last 8 years...w/o insinuating something related to BHO's administration

base, at best it's a slight jab

BHO even admitted, after his SOTU address, that his inability to work with Rs and achieve more was one of his biggest regrets

= to debate against facts makes you seem dim.

also, why are we pretending that BHO is beyond criticism?

there's alot of day 1 promises that were made and not kept

HRC has been trying to pass herself off as BHO 2.0

which in and of itself contradicts the idea that she'll be more effective overcoming R obstructionism

voters, my candidate will help us move past the awful legacy of the last 8 years, which he attributed to the financial meltdown and Republican obstructionism, is a forward-thinking statement. He even credits the Dodd bill, and the President's role in its passage, as part of the reason why what happened within the last 8 years won't happen again. So, she is building off where we are and what has been accomplished and thinks that she can continue to improve upon that. This isn't a dig at Obama, it is a statement of her vision. Whether it's true or not is immaterial. I don't believe, but I at least listened to the speech, and followed what he was saying. Your 191 reply with the simple ___ = ____ equation can only have been made by someone who didn't listen which you admitted and who can only think about things when they're nice and linear. You clearly dislike her, and it is dripping in your replies, so expectations for your ability to be rational should probably be tempered, and it's strange that you would argue something so forcefully when you only listened to 5 minutes. You literally do not have the knowledge to comment on the totality of the speech, but that hasn't stopped you. Kind of weird and tragic. God speed.

why would anybody expect a Clinton to fare better with R obstructionism?
