But my girlfriend, who's got a good half-decade on me, saw George Michael as well. And then so did Chris. Generational thing I guess. I didn't see any George Michael at all.

but I just need to say, however many years ago it was, Jennifer Lopez did a huge service for the Oscar telecast, and for approximately half of the viewing audience.

EDIT: Oh, I just looked it up, and apparently I was thinking of the Grammys. Still, I give her all the credit.

that term is very specific to a time and place that no longer exists

chris did not dance a jig or step and fetch anything in any way

he is a comedian who told jokes. he's allowed to do that...black comedians are NOT cooning

y'all need to cut that crap out.

Making Black people the butt of your jokes tho & making a fool out of yourself in the process when you don't have to??...you a coon biscuit. He does have noted incidents of this type of behavior tho so maybe I shouldn't be surprised lol.

Like, I know shit was hella (more) dire in the early 20th century so I don't fault my folks for doing what they needed to do to survive but that is separate from Chris straddling tf outta the coon line in the opening monologue.

Ikr, as an entertainer...you probably up there being a coon biscuit when white people are laughing & clapping along when you tell jokes like: hey white people, remember when Black people had real problems to protest/boycott??...like, we couldn't worry about best cinematographer b/c grandma was getting raped & swinging from a tree, haha. Not to mention clowning Jada & Rihanna, 2 Black women, for the yt kee kees. Chris ain't dumb, he knew what he was doing.

It involved kids so I can see how, some would cringe but it's also true as Shit...

I think it was a very racial Oscars for obvious reasons and in those instances I think it's ok if he sprinkled it around to other people besides black and white.

In response to Reply # 66

Rock can make the lynching jokes, I can't think of many non-black comedians who could have pulled it off.

Asian comedian probably could have pulled it off.

Even with that rule aside, it felt wrong. Especially with the kids. They were the but of the jokes, not the Academy.

I guess moreover it just wasn't that funny.

137. "I think the Asian Kids Joke was nuanced"
In response to Reply # 66

I don't think the joke was kids with the funny names. I think bringing the kids on stage was a setup for the real joke; which was his follow up comment. "Now if anybody’s upset about that joke, I want you to tweet about it on your phone that was also made by these kids.”

Chris Rock isn't stupid. I could be totally off base, but I think he's smart enough to realize brining those kids on stage just to play on Asian stereotypes was low hanging fruit. He knew that was going to get a reaction so he followed up with his comment about making the phones. In my view, it's a commentary on the hypocrisy of the Hollywood liberals getting upset about the kids on stage, but ignoring other issues like the labor practices of tech companies that make these phones.

Then again, I could be reaching.

It's pretty damn dumb and offensive, and not just in the Jewish context (although it is really poor taste since Wagner was Hitler's favorite composer and he used to have The Ring played at the concentration camps) since Wagner was racist all the way across the board. It would been like playing Gary Glitter to get the Spotlight folks to wrap it up.

A good laugh aside; the fact that he had to shame Jada and Will to make his critique of Hollywood's whitwashing make him a sympathizer to the Hollywood current system. The idea(Unproven assumption) that Jada said what she said because she thought her husband deserved a win for Concussion is one thing; the fact that she was still calling out Hollywood's ignoring minorities and their contributions to cinema is another and by ignoring that fact and choosing to ridicule her for it,instead,Chris Rock failed and to me sounded rather uncle tommish.

he made it more about PoC and not just black people.

He had his moments. Failed quite a few times but definitely didn't hit it out of the park.

The standard is did we find him funny and/or effective.

it's an individual's opinion.

If your low expectation self thinks he did fine because you couldn't do better, good for you.

How you going to tell other folks how they should feel about it?? SMH.

what an idiot...chris rock played her.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
