Plus, Kanye reveals the inspiration behind his new album's title

BY ALEX YOUNGON FEBRUARY 13, 2016, 7:10PM

Say what you will about Kanye West’s personality, and Yeezus knows there’s a lot to be said, but there’s no denying the man’s commitment to his craft. In a series of tweets prior to his performance on Saturday Night Live this evening, Kanye revealed that he’s racked up over $53 million in personal debt.

KANYE WEST ✔ @kanyewest
I write this to you my brothers while still 53 million dollars in personal debt... Please pray we overcome... This is my true heart...

resumambly a majority of that debt has been accrued via his various fashion endeavors. APC founder Jean Touitou confirmed as much in a 2014 interview, at the time saying Kanye was $30 million in the hole from his line of women’s clothes.

In a separate tweet, Kanye revealed that his new album The Life of Pablo is not named about Pablo Picasso or Pablo Escobar, but rather Paul the Apostle.

Don't mind me as I find it difficult to thoroughly examine what $10 million of debt looks like. Yeezus pushes the culture to new heights but $53 million of debt sucks.

You don't start ANY business without creating an LLC so you aren't collecting that debt on your own.

For that exact reason, he could just easily get out of it. And he has no record in the fashion industry. It'd be a bad investment.

Now Kanye himself, he has an income stream from his music and he owns homes and personal assets and is married to kim kardashian who I'm sure has a prenup but can at least pay the mortgage and take care of the kids while Kanye pays back his debts.

There's a lot of stupid money getting thrown around out there. There's a lot of rich starfuckers out there as well that would throw some money his way.

B. Kanye stated an LLC for the restaurants he bought. He knew not to be on the hook for that. He should have known for this (and maybe he did and this is all overblown.)

And I'll admit I discounted the issue of Kanye getting in his own way when it came to getting money. If Kanye wanted to actually run a fashion line as a business (and find a business partner ala Jay and everyone else), he could have found the money.

Kanye took a terrible approach to it and ended up having to take an even costlier terrible approach - self-funding.

Never reflects what someone has in the bank or in assets. It's a highly speculative process where they try to assign value to their brand and visible holdings.

Or did he hit his Yeezy on Jumpman's shoulder and subsequently bust
his head on the pavement?

In response to Reply # 12

he was losing cash. It's probably not a stretch considering how many motherfuckers are involved in the actual performance that you gotta pay a real wage (dancers/models) as opposed to a handful of roadies dealing with a crazy setup (aka U2).

Also unlike a U2 who heavily brand their tours, it seems Kanye keeps it pretty minimal.

That said, its not hard for him to make it back considering his wife's is also pretty wealthy with a healthy income (not like there's a high overhead in being the Queen Thot) and he's still at his commercial height where he sells out consistently.

Like he sold out Madison Square garden playing tracks on a laptop.

There are so many ways for celebrities and rich people to make money (on top of all of the assets they own) that that's not really a huge issue right now since, as you said, he's still at his peak.

But hopefully, this will teach him a lesson and he'll learn to be more frugal so if/when his celebrity does start to decline, he won't have to start doing Psychic Network ads to pay the bills.

If Kanye made a Formation-type video, it'd be "There's Kanye being Kanye." Obviously, some talking heads would make a big deal of it so they could use Kanye's name to get attention but that's about it.

Him whining about being the main designer at Givenchy doesn't negate the fact he says he's gonna fuck Taylor Swift.

That said, its unfortunate a nigga selling out ugly sneakers at a premium cries every chance he gets for old european fashion establishment asking for love when we've ALWAYS been our own fashion trendsetters even when buying their shit. but hey, let him have his fuckups

In response to Reply # 22

as a Artist IMO. OJ shucked, grined and jive off camera, however in his prime on a football field he was a beast and not a clown.

Kayne ain't never been the Best MC in the game ever. got a personality, but nowhere near as charasmatic as OJ ever was.

OJ had the kind of "Juice" pun intended often reserved for White quarterbacks and that was deep love.

Kayne is a bit more soulful with his than Juice.however not alot much though.
to Me Kayne stopped growning as a Artist some time ago. OJ was great in college and the Pros. Kayne been on that reality show tip for a good few years now.

to me 03-08 was Kayne's peak and prime if you will IMO

You can have $53MM in personal debt and $200MM in assets (he likely has more) and shouldn't boohoo over it. How?
He's likely loaned himself the money or cosigned/pledged for loans for his fashion line, and then he can say he's put in $53MM in capital or shareholder loans to the thing. Then, he double-dips by repaying himself a high interest-only amount, which the business can treat as a tax deduction, and eventually converts the debt to equity in the business. Trump, by example, has always been in tremendous personal debt by virtue of loan covenants and guarantees that were theoretically backed by his personal assets but had other instruments backstopping his direct involvement and responsibility for the debt; if projects go well, he converts his position; if it goes bad, he files or liquidates and gets the tax benefit, personally, of the failed business without any direct personal loss.

I think none of what you written is correct except he probably guaranteed 53 Million in debt.

Not to mention publishing rights, endorsement deals and personal property (including a difficult to value art collection due to how modern it trends). If we know anything about Kanye outside of his public ego, it's that he isn't dumb. His money is well taken care of. Jay-Z doesn't do big deals these days with people throwing money away and living album to album. "$53M in debt" is an easy way to glamorize obscene wealth. For example, part of that debt is $11MM in acquisition and another $3-4M in renovation loans for a home he and his wife are never going to live in but are instead going to sell for $20M, minimum. Poor guy.

Most people in his income/wealth bracket wouldn't talk about this as debt but instead as "investments". But you don't get publicity by saying "I GOT $53M IN PRIVATELY CONTROLLED INVESTMENTS"!

In response to Reply # 57

50 cent type broke.

He hasn't nearly made the type of money 50 made but seems to be living even bigger and extended himself even more.

Publishing rights ain't what they use to be.

50% of Roc-A-Fella was sold for 10M in 2004
50% of bad boy was purchased for 30M in 2005
All of death row sold for 24M in 2008

Kanye, as a signed artist, I doubt sees millions upon millions from publishing.

I would think his biggest dough comes from his sneaker deals.

I thought 50's bankruptcy would expose that this rappers aren't nearly as paid as they want us to believe.

62. "TMZ said he made 30 mill in 2014 and 22 mill in 2015"
In response to Reply # 60

The answer to that $53 million question -- how the hell is Kanye West that deep in debt -- is that he isn't, but he does spend a ton ... on himself.

Sources connected to Kanye tell TMZ the number -- $53 mil -- reflects how much dough 'Ye has invested in his own companies related to fashion and music. For instance, we're told he's sunk $40 million alone into 3 seasons worth of Yeezy fashion!

Yeezy shoes are all the rage now, but we're told Kanye didn't get a dime from Nike when he created the first gen of the shoe. He funded the design out of his own pocket.

Additionally, we're told he spent several hundred thousands to build sets for his last tour, and to make his 2012 short film, "Cruel Summer."

The good news for Kanye is he'll make back his investment because he earns like crazy -- $22 million in 2015 and $30 million in 2014, according to Forbes.

Bottom line, no one's turning off his lights.

Just look at any major 70s act. Bowie, Stevie, Lennon, whoever. Almost all of them eventually saw diminishing returns with audience response even if they remained artistically relevant. It's pretty damn rare for an artist to remain truly loved for more than a decade.

In response to Reply # 89
Thu Feb-18-16 02:20 PM by Nodima

Working middle class people related to that, so much so that it made him rich. And then he rapped about being rich because it was what he wanted to be and wanted to discuss.

He couldn't have seen TMZ and Twitter coming in 2003/2004. I think we underrate how wildly the proliferation of media and "private" moments has driven Kanye to where he is now.

In response to Reply # 90

and he has been stunting ever since.

it's rare for a working class rapper to rap about struggling after they are out of the struggle.

honestly, I don't even think most of these rants are a big deal. It keeps him in the front page and that's the goal.

what I find hilarious is the hate he gets for his Taylor Swift beef. Can anyone name 3 Swift songs that aren't about an ex boyfriend or throwing shade at another artist? Its all part of the biz... controversy sells.

In response to Reply # 89

Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that versace!
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like nigga you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop/coupe

I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause fuck it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

nigga told us from jump but some fans got older and sensitive as fuck and now it's "Ye hates women and loved white peoples opinions"

Man he has always been a walking contradiction. I hate when rappers tell listeners they got issues and are hypocritical and then people turn around and get mad because they said some hypocritical shit.

to College Dropout.

He's covering a lot of the same topics, filtered through the prism that he no longer gets much time to just sit and think about it. He's not the guy in the background saying "never change, I'm too stuck in my ways" anymore. He's the guy screaming it through vague philosophy to his entourage backstage when he thinks no one's listening, and angry at the fact someone at this point is ALWAYS listening (yet also more than a little stoked he carries the culturally cache that demands he be recorded in all manners possible whenever he's outside his home).

he's by far the most different acting post success rapper we've ever seen

how can anyone STILL fcuk with Kanye like they use to?

The album has some bright spots but is mostly half-assed.

Beats aside dude has become totally unrelatable. Nigga went form rapping about working at the Gap and riding around with your boy with the fresh new whip to..., I actually don't know what the fcuk he is talking about anymore.

If his best feature is he pisses white people off that isn't really true anymore. Dude is more of a clown begging for attention like Dennis Rodman than a thorn in the side. Nigga is totally dismissable by white america. The shit he says now is a far cry from "George Bush doesn't care about Black People"

And it's true that Kendrick makes it soooo much worst because he is doing all the shit that Kanye thinks he is doing.

It seems like the only folks who still go hard for him are the fuccbois and old niggas and white journalist who don't want to seem not up on things.

But yeah, fukc that guy.

i agree w/all of that, btw.

especially the part about Kanye's 'mad-making' w/regard to whitey. or the lack thereof b/c he's easily dismissed by whitey these days since he seems so...off. the 'GB don't care about black ppl' thing was more effective largely b/c at the time Kanye seemed more poised and composed and thoughtful than he does lately. so those words carried some weight. but if he said that same thing today it'd be dismissed not unlike the rantings of a mad, pouty child.

Colbert called Kanye a 'visionary toddler' - i think that's spot-on. lol

fuck you.

I'm not a big fan of this album (though I like it's general thesis), but I do find it interesting how aware he (or his writers) are of the various responses this album and his past year in the spotlight would elicit. The few good jokes I've seen about him and his Twitter rants in the past week feel lifted from his own lyrics at times.

Kanye said fuck W... what more do y'all want? Biggie didn't rap about selling crack after the first album. Nas wasnt in QueensBridge for his second album. Jay said you want his old music buy the old albums.

The Roots are the house band for Fallon bruh...

You really expect Ye to stay in the College Dropout box he built? Now I will say I like his older shit better but his new shit is still in some fuck whitey, get money.

Dude is rapping about fucking women, making money, buying shit and dealing with stardom. Not sure why all a sudden it's taboo and off limits.

It's rap. fuck who it offends, especially if it's dusty ass white people and soft ass Niggas who don't like when they hear the word bitch.

And I know she like chocolate men
She got more niggas off than Cochran, huh?

Black Skinhead:

They see a black man with a white woman
At the top floor they gone come to kill King Kong
Middle America packed in
Came to see me in my black skin
Number one question they asking
Fuck every question you asking
If I don't get ran out by Catholics
Here come some conservative Baptists
Claiming I'm overreacting
Like them black kids in Chiraq bitch

and New Slaves was the most politically concious song of the new decade until Kendrick came with TPOB:

I can give a half clap to those couple of lines but that shit is too narrowly focused to the pain and suffering of being rich and white people not respecting him to think it's soo political as much as self serving.

I talk shit about Jay-Z when he complains about how it's not fair when other rich people still treat him black.

I dig Black Excellence though because it universalize the issue to a much better extent. .

It MAY be half assed
It MAY be disingenuous.
It MAY have been executed badly.
It MAY be a bad album!

But to call the bulk of Yeezus NOT politically charged is an outright lie.

Im hyperbole-ing the PE connection (hey, it's OKP!) but those are facts.

At least I admit im trolling with the OG PE statement, y'all niggas are like "WHAT?!? THAT NIGGA AIN'T POLITICAL, YOUR A FUCKING CLOWN. HE'S A FUCKING CLOWN TOO" but forget he was the first dude to call out President George Bush on national television for Katrina. An artist can be an asshole in real life, fuck white girls in real life, AND throw in some politically charged raps once in awhile, they aren't mutually exclusive.

But my main point remains.

If you see Chuck D running out of the studio mad because someone suggesting he recites these lyrics. I don't know what to tell you.

SHIT IM NOT EVEN SAYING KANYE WROTE THESE LYRICS NIGGA, lol. 50/50 chance he DIDN'T. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY AINT POLITICALLY CHARGED.

You see it's broke nigga racism
That's that "Don't touch anything in the store"
And this rich nigga racism
That's that "Come in, please buy more
What you want, a Bentley? Fur coat? A diamond chain?
All you blacks want all the same things"
Used to only be niggas now everybody playing
Spending everything on Alexander Wang
New Slaves

You see there's leaders and there's followers
But I'd rather be a dick than a swallower

You see there's leaders and there's followers
But I'd rather be a dick than a swallower

I wear my heart on the sleeve
I know that we the new slaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I know that we the new slaves
I see the blood on the leaves
They throwing hate at me
Want me to stay at ease
Fuck you and your corporation
Y'all niggas can't control me
I know that we the new slaves
I know that we the new slaves
I'm 'bout to wild the fuck out
I'm going Bobby Boucher
I know that pussy ain't free

Y'all throwing contracts at me
You know that niggas can't read
Throw 'em some Maybach keys
Fuck it, c'est la vie
I know that we the new slaves
Y'all niggas can't fuck with me
Y'all niggas can't fuck with Ye
Y'all niggas can't fuck with Ye
I'll move my family out the country
So you can't see where I stay
So go and grab the reporters
So I can smash their recorders
See they'll confuse us with some bullshit
Like the New World Order
Meanwhile the DEA
Teamed up with the CCA
They tryna lock niggas up
They tryna make new slaves
See that's that privately owned prisons
Get your piece today
They prolly all in the Hamptons
Braggin' 'bout what they made
Fuck you and your Hampton house
I'll fuck your Hampton spouse
Came on her Hampton blouse
And in her Hampton mouth
Y'all 'bout to turn shit up
I'm 'bout to tear shit down
I'm 'bout to air shit out
Now what the fuck they gon' say now?

and yes, the Swift line was definitely some shit that made white folks mad.

She addressed it at the fucking grammy's.

ask around, read comment sections, white folks hate Ye. Now, this doesn't mean they are scared of him like he is a killer in the streets.

as,far as wanting whiteys approval? I really don't see it. I think dude just wants universal praise and is quick to say fuck white people and I don't see the problem with it.

Yall talking about white people don't fear him or hate him. I mean, the nigga is just a rapper it ain't like he is Huey P out in these streets.

in 10 years or so...

his fans will talk about the next new Kendrick who keeps it real and didn't let fame get him. Hell, before TPAB dropped people questioned that Taylor Swift song he did.

it's cycles... when Ye dropped you were in his nuts and prolly shitting on Jay for selling out and wearing suits.

nothing worse than watching rap fans are and change while being mad rappers do the same thing.

y'all want soulful Ye rapping about shit he used to rap about...aka, another College Drop out.

so if and when Kendrick moves to a different sound or,new topic 7 years from now people will want Section 80 and GKMC. Hell, some of his fans want him to go back to that sound already.

Ye's behavior to just being on some rap shit or that he gets a pass because he pisses off white folk, let's be real here...I don't think people r missing that very valid point...They are talking about something entirely different...

This is not about what homie says about Taylor Swift or any of the surface shit...

It's what seems to be HIS constant need to be validated by white folks and then turning around and saying Y'ALL ARE RACIST....lol

I mean, let's not even discuss the fact that people closely associated with dude believes he has serious mental issues....

I'll just stay on shit like 'Ye complaining about a music review from Pitchfork (which gave him 9 out of 10), that white critics and white publications should not be reviewing hip-hop albums and that the white media outlets treat him like shit....

THE RUB? YE DOES NOT EVEN DEAL WITH THE BLACK PRESS. HE DOESN'T TALK TO URBAN PRESS. How are you going to complain about white press treating you like dog shit (again, a very positive 9 out of 10 review is what sparked all this...Think about that....) and then ignore black press....? While I write for places like Billboard and the NY Post, I am of that urban press world too. And trust. A LOT of people in that world was giving 'Ye the middle finger when he said that...

'Ye cries about not being accepted by European fashion houses; cries about not being taken seriously by white fashion designers and the white fashion world....

As a fan of 'Ye, it's damn near impossible to not feel like a dickhead supporting him....lol...I'll let y'all figure out the rest....

No...that's not what's happening here....Anyone saying FUCK WHITEY looks like a damn fool crying when they are constantly begging to be accepted AND THEN dismissing your own people....lol

Michael Jackson the biggest star that we've ever seen walk this earth still talked to black press...So did Prince...So does Denzel...So does Michael Jordan....I can go on and on...

The point is simple: Yes, everybody in this showbiz thing wants universal praise...But 'Ye seems to be obsessed with white acceptance...To the point where he twists himself in knots OVER A 9 OUT OF 10 RATING...lol

Yes, dude def. has mental issues...But even on some shit-talking shit, 'Ye at times comes off as a brown nosing hypocrite who doesn't know if he should kiss white people's ass or curse them as he continues to shit on his own people (black press) and cry about it....

It's really something....

I have never heard anyone on here point to Ebony for a record review as validation that shit was hot.

I mean, it's no different than Spike Lee, Black actors, etc... they all want praise from white publications and award shows. Universal praise is the goal

for the record, I have no clue if he shuns black publications. if so, that's fucked up.

but if you are going to talk shit to white people, gotta do it on the mags they read.
I'm not really interested in how some see him kissing white peoples ass. I'm just here for the fuck you'd to white people and the fall out that occurs from it.

I like that shit.

Who is talking about fucking music reviews?...lol

And "black" press is a very loose tag....I'm talking about BET...I'm talking about VIBE...black pop culture sites....URBAN hip-hop press.....Hell, even Ebony. I'm talking about INTERVIEWS....I'm talking about FEATURE/COVER stories...

Nah dog....'Ye even talks to white sites and pubs that don't get half the traffic or reads as the outlets that I named...lol

I'm just telling u what journalists are saying. They are saying that 'Ye measures his success/validity on what the white press says about him....And then shits on black press and black journalists...

All this ^^^^ would not be new...The problem is 'Ye does all of THIS while constantly crying about not being accepted by the white press.....and then shitting on black press....That's just part of the issue folks have with 'Ye...Other than that, I could care less what he says about Taylor Swift and all that other mess...lol...Let him be an asshole...

Just don't cry when white folks r giving u the finger and then shit on your own people...

I'm just here for the rants on white people. I don't think Ye has anything to say besides boasting and bragging about how awesome he is.

But I also mentioned that because 'Ye has a history of crying about the white press....He does it ALL the time....

And this ^^^ would be cool and all...Ye would not be the first person to complain about white press coverage...But he is among the rare breed to cry about criticism from the white press AND totally ignore black press when he's doing the media walk through for his projects...

I think there is a long list of black entertainers who were frustrated by a certain level of phenomenal success but still having "don't forget you a nigga" moments.

That love hate relationship with white folks is fascinating. It'd be cool if Kanye had some self-awareness about it.

And yes I am watching that OJ miniseries and reading the book so I got OJ on the mind.

co-worker asked me what I thought about Kanye yesterday.

told her straight up "any black person who makes white people mad has my support"

MJ
OJ
Ye
Cam
Bey
Chris Brown

I don't care about their shortcomings and missteps, if white people mad about it, they have my support.

No nuance. Definitely not the perspective of a learned, worldly man.

That's not even a principled take. It's just juvenile and counterproductive, no different from the average white dude pissing and moaning at "reverse racism". It's on that same exact dimwitted shelf.

That's some 9th grade level worldview for that ass.

What's worse is that you're proud of it. You're putting it out there like it's actually reasonable.

I don't think it reflects on the totality of you as a person or anything but it's a little troubling to see you double down on such a childish take on this.

Always have.

I know that he is revered on this site but I called dude as a half-talented Tom from day one....of course, many of y'all aren't seeing his true colors until 12 years later. LOL.

And he's always been off. It just worse when his mother passed and he became more famous IMO.
