"Figured I'd do y'all OkayiPhone users a solid..."

Being honest, I pretty much despise Apple and I say this as a former Mac owner (Quadra 840AV, PowerMac 7100AV, 7600/200, 9600/300, blue/white G3, quicksilver G4). What I can't stand more than Apple itself are Apple Stan's and I know a number of y'all fall into that category.

When I first saw these images on a couple of other boards I frequent, my first reaction was "aw fuck, here goes some more useless shit that iPhone idiots are gonna brag about" (DO NOT DO WHAT IT SAYS IN THE PIC YOU FUCKIN IDIOTS!!! I'm WARNING YOU about some shit, so pay attantion!)

http://i68.tinypic.com/11brpl5.jpg

Then it hit me... That date is familiar... It's the Unix Epoch. The beginning of time in the world of Unix is Jan 1, 1970. All time on every version of Unix or Unix-like operating systems (Linux, which Android is based on) is calculated in number of seconds since the epoch. iOS is based on a stripped down BSD Unix just like OSX. At boot up, the OS does little mathematical stuff for various system settings, some of which includes division... And you just set time to 0.

Surely even the most dim of you iPhone users can see where the problem is, right?

For those that can't figure this out (prolly all of you iPhone owners): By setting the phone to that specific date, you have set the counter to 0. The moment the OS processes anything time related with division in it you divide by 0 and unless iOS is designed to trap a function that results in a "divide by zero", it can crash the OS.

well... That's exactly what's been happening. Setting your date to Jan 1, 1970 in the hopes of some retro Apple shit on your phone will brick it... permanently.

Part of me wanted to post up the image to see how many of y'all would fall for it and brick your phones; that would have been fun. But I'm trying to reform myself... this Buddhist practice of mine must really be working to change me 'cause I would have delighted in watching iPhone owners drop off because of it.

Can't the not-too-bright iPhone user just reset the phone to factory settings?

Divide-by-zero operations cause logical errors, not physical ones (unless Apple engineers their devices with a special brand of WTF).

Everyone is issued an iPhone for work.

This could be my magnum opus to end the week, all it would take its one email, or even inviting everyone that walks by me to take a look at that and see if they do it.

I also don't want to be fired, but I could also say I didn't know it would do that.

The hardest choice I've had to make all week is to do this or not.

This gets patched and fixed at some point.

Meanwhile their fucking GS3's are still waiting on the Stagefright patch.

Please discuss this:

http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/linux-vulnerability-exposes-66-percent-of-all-android-devices-to-attacks-report-792215

66 percent of Android devices (phones and tablets) are vulnerable as Google downplays this.

Say what you want about iphones but at least they receive OS upgrades after 16 months on the market. Motorola outright said fuck Moto E owners about a Marshmallow update.

COME AT ME. *throws a chair through the window*

The only people butthurt are Android fanboys after their phones and tablets brick thanks to vulnerabilities their OEM won't patch in order to convince them to buy new smartphones.

Once again this will be patched and every iphone owner goes back to their regularly scheduled programming.

This has been discussed. Aside from camera, mp3 playback, and occasional internet use I don't need any of the shit found on a smartphone. What would be the purpose in buying one? To be like everyone else??? I had a couple of Android joints and aside from phone calls and the aforementioned functions (no, I don't text either) I didn't use anything the phone could do. It made no sense to continue buying into some shit that I'm not using.

dawg... Apple forces obsolescence on their products and has done so for years. A perfectly good computer, phone, or whatever simply won't get OS upgrades in order to force you to buy the latest piece of hardware. This has been their MO for the longest and will continue to be the case as long as Apple consumers continue to blithely empty their pockets whenever they release even the stupidest gadget or make idiotic changes to their hardware.

>Once again this will be patched and every iphone owner goes

Maybe you don't understand. I'll explain this in simpler terms:

This issue shouldn't exist in a "modern OS". This is a fundamental part of the underlying architecture that iOS is based on and, as such, should never exist as something that can render your phone completely unusable.

This is false. The iphone 3GS received an update to ios 7 but your larger point is false as well.

It's obvious that as new iphones release with advanced software features that older devices are incapable of running due to hardware issues. A common example is iphone 4s performance decreasing on ios 9. My OG intel iMac received software updates well after that production run ended for the length of seven years.

tl;dr the hardware is incapable of running advanced features of the newest operating systems but third party vendors step in to replicate the missing features so users don't left out.

As advanced features roll out requiring better hardware performance on the newest silicon it's obvious older devices would struggle to deal with this. This problem should exist but it's in the process of being patched so meh. Performance should decrease.

Let's not confuse this with Motorola refusing to support the Moto E with an update to Android M despite releasing it in the second quarter of Q2 2015.

Remember in my OP how I mentioned I was a long time mac user? Why do you think I sold all my macs? I had been burned by JobsCo one time too many. The first time was ok, So I couldn't upgrade the Quadra 840AV past System 8. IT was an old 040 based processor and we were on PPC. Fair enough. But...

My 7100AV was stopped at OS9.1
My 7600 was also capped at 9.1
Technically, my 9600 capped at 9.1 as well but I used an application to get 9.2.2 up and running.
My Powerbook 1400c also capped at 9.1

I eventually installed a Sonnet G3 card in my 9600 which gave me native support for OS9.2.2. OSX was released and, of course, older pc's with G3 cards weren't supported without hacks.

Fine. I copped a Beige G3... And Apple promptly dropped support for it within two or three years. Not that it matters 'cause OSX didn't support the floppy drive or 3D accelerated video, both of which I used under 9.2.2, so my OSX experience up to that point was shitty.

I copped a blue and white G3... and Apple promptly discontinued support for those with Leopard.

Whatever, I copped a Quicksilver G4... And it dawned on me: All that time I was fuckin with Macs I barely changed my PC's, I was running the same P3's and P4's I had copped as far back as '99. I just installed the latest OS and was done with it. I wasn't using My mac like I used to and it was getting long in the tooth. Instead of copping a G5, I simply got rid of it and the last few Macs I had left went with it.

Meanwhile, I was able to upgrade damned near every PC I owned from Win98 through Win2000 and, depending on the PC, as far as Vista and Win7 (i.e. My new in 2000 Dell Optiplex GX200 with a P3-933 and 1GB RAM can run Windows7 without a hiccup and my Prescott P4's and Pentium D machine are all good up through Windows 10).

My old LG Optimus T shipped with Froyo (android 2.3). I downloaded and installed Jellybean on it. One of the best things about an open source OS is that you have the ability to port newer versions to older hardware. The Optimus T has an ARM6 processor. ICS and up require an ARM7 processor, yet it can be recompiled for the ARM6. This was done and made available to anyone that wanted to run it on their old phone... And it was butter smooth, far faster and smoother than Froyo.

You still don't get it: This is a basic building block of Unix, which IOS is based on. This isn't some "advanced feature", this has been around since Unix was first released in the 70's.

1. Unless there's some other way do change the date/time that I'm not aware of, it would take you like 16 hours of constant, furious scrolling to set the date back that far. Who would waste that much time just for a dumb "easter egg"?

2. Why the fuck is it possible to set the date even 2 years in the past? I'm either missing something or that's a huge oversight.

Where is the peace when we are in the back of ambulances? Where is the peace then?
They don't want to call for peace then.
